From the Headmaster

A crucial element of my responsibilities as Headmaster is the recruitment of capable and committed staff and the School is indeed extremely fortunate to have such wonderful teaching and administrative staff engaged in the education of your sons. A feature of the most positive reputation of Toowoomba Grammar School across Australia, and indeed internationally, is that highly qualified and talented men and women apply to teach at our School. They are aware of the quality of the boys and young men attending our School, their work ethic, good behaviour, honesty and integrity. Furthermore, many teachers seek to work at our School because of the structured learning environment we provide, the emphasis on a well-rounded and balanced education and the motivation of the boys to do the very best they can.

As you are aware, we have celebrated the Deputy Headmaster’s success in being promoted to the prestigious position as Principal of Townsville Grammar School commencing in January 2018. Mr Kelly has provided outstanding service to our School for eleven years and we are delighted that his ability and professionalism have been recognised by

a fellow member of the Grammar Schools of Queensland Association. Mr Anderson, as the Head of the Senior School, has been appointed as the Deputy Headmaster to follow Mr Kelly; he brings valuable experience and knowledge of the role as well as the operation of our School. Mr Anderson is extremely well regarded and respected both by the teaching staff and all students.

With Mr Anderson’s promotion to Deputy Headmaster, the vacancy of the Head of Senior School has been created. The School has been successful in attracting a highly experienced educator to this position. Mr Mark Oliphant will commence at Toowoomba Grammar School as the Head of Senior School from the beginning of next year. Mr Oliphant is no stranger to TGS in that he was employed here from 2005 – 2011, initially as a Health and Physical Education teacher and later he added the responsibility of being a Boarding Housemaster. For some time Mr Oliphant was also Acting Director of Sport and Activities. Following his departure from TGS, Mr Oliphant transferred to one of the GPS schools in Sydney, namely Newington College, where he

continued as a Senior Boarding Housemaster and teacher. In 2015, he and his wife relocated back to Queensland where he was successful in being appointed to a promoted position as Director of Boarding at Anglican Church Grammar School, ‘Churchie’. Mr Oliphant is married to Carla, a qualified secondary teacher, and they have three young sons. In earlier years, Mr Oliphant was a member of the Australian Triathlon team and a Queensland champion in duathlon. I am sure that Mr Oliphant will be keen to advance the fitness levels of all boys in the Senior School.

Sadly, I have received the resignation of the School’s Director of Performance, Mr Neil Roche-Kelly, who has been on staff for nineteen years, initially as the Head of Arts and more recently as the Director of Performance. I have written at length about Mr Roche-Kelly’s wonderful contribution to our School in my Speech Day Annual Report. Mr Roche-Kelly’s successor is a person of Australian and British heritage, Ms Samantha Forrest. Her family home was in Mudgee, rural NSW, and she was then educated at Ballarat and Queen’s Grammar School in Victoria, prior to a family transfer to the UK when she was 15 years of age. Ms Forrest completed the International Baccalaureate in Vienna and then returned to Brisbane to complete a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. At the ‘Con’, she majored in voice with secondary study in ’cello. Ms Forrest has toured as a freelance soprano singer in Europe (performing with the English National Opera, the BBC and London Voices) and has taught music (voice, ’cello and piano) in Scotland, England and Switzerland. Ms Forrest is transferring to TGS from her current employment as Head of Music at “The American School in Switzerland”.

Another new teacher to join TGS is Mr Ben Schuhmacher who is the new Director of Cricket and a teacher of Health and Physical Education. Mr Schuhmacher played professional cricket in the Leicester Premier League in 2008 and was the leading run-scorer in the Surrey Championship in 2009. From 2012 – 2014 he held the position of Director of Cricket at Padua College where he co-ordinated the training and development program for 35 cricket teams. In 2013 – 2015 Mr Schuhmacher coached (and played in) the Valley District Cricket Club Premier Grade side which boasts current Test, Australia ‘A’ and First

Class cricketers. This team, under Mr Schuhmacher’s coaching, won both the Brisbane Premier Grade Twenty20 and two-day competitions. Mr Schuhmacher holds a Bachelor of Education and has taught PE for nine years in both Australia and Britain. Mr Schuhmacher has coached and played with a number of extremely talented cricketers including: Usman Khawaja – current Australian Test & One Day Cricketer; Lee Carseldine – former Australia A, Qld Bulls and BBL Cricketer – also TV personality from Survivor; Jack Wildermuth - current Australia A, Qld Bulls and Melbourne Renegade; and Luke Feldman – former Australian A representative and current Qld Bulls & Brisbane Heat BBL player.

I look forward to welcoming these new staff to our School in 2018 and also look forward to your company at the Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremony at the Empire Theatre on Wednesday, 15 November.

Kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

Peter B. HauserHeadmaster

From the Deputy Headmaster

This dinner, now in its ninth year, provides an opportunity for boys with Indigenous heritage enrolled at the School and their families to gather together to celebrate their culture as well as providing an opportunity to wish the Senior boys farewell. As always, it was a most enjoyable evening with the Senior boys recollecting their time at the School, some impressive traditional dancing from Bailey Doomadgee, and a performance by a guest to the School, Roger Knox. Uncle Roger is an Indigenous man from the Gamilaroi nation and a well-known country singer. His Wikipedia page describes him as the Black Elvis and the Koori King of Country. Following a powerful performance of two of his songs, Roger addressed the boys. When speaking to them, he outlined his five simple tips for life. They were as follows:

1. Work hard2. Study hard3. Save your money4. Stay out of trouble5. Be ready

And for good measure, he added in a sixth. It was: Don’t be silly. Roger used an Indigenous word, “nureggah”, to describe this which in his language simply means “do not be an idiot”. Whilst aimed at the boys

in the room, I found Roger’s tips to be some straightforward, simple advice for all boys. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Gabrielle Battersby for her organisation of this dinner as well for her guidance of our indigenous boys for the past nine years.

Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday CampOver the first weekend of the September holidays, the School held its annual Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp. For three days, 46 Year 11 boys along with girls from Fairholme College and The Glennie School cared for their young guests with a disability whilst undertaking a wide range of fun activities. The personal growth experienced by the companions who are involved in the Sony Camp cannot be underestimated. For some, it can be a life-changing experience. Following the camp, we gathered feedback from the boys so that the experience can be improved for future camps. Below, I have included some feedback from two boys regarding what they have learnt from their camp experience.

Tom Dolzan - The main thing that I learnt from the camp was to be grateful for just how fortunate we are. The parents and carers of the children we looked after care for their child 24/7, 365 days a year

Just prior to the beginning of the last holidays, the School hosted its annual Indigenous Boys’ Family Dinner in Old Hall.

and I can only imagine how challenging this would be at times. We only had to look after our guests for a few days and I know that in that short period of time, many companions, including me at some point, became stressed and tired. Given this, I think the primary skills I developed on the camp were patience and gratitude.

Tom Coonan - Being involved in the camp allowed me to gain valuable experiences and life skills, such as tolerance and patience, communicating effectively, being empathetic and having a greater appreciation of my own health and wellbeing. It also gave me a much greater understanding to see how these children with challenges have so much to offer to our world and need to be appreciated, as they are just normal children.

CadetsIn late October, the Cadet Unit completed its 125th anniversary year in fine style with the staging of the Marching Out Parade followed by the Dining Out Night. The Marching Out Parade was again a most memorable occasion as the Honour Guard, the Drum Corp and then the Cadet platoons put on a well-drilled display. On the Saturday evening, the Cadets’ year culminated at the traditional Dining Out Night where the contribution of the senior cadets was recognised and celebrated.

GPS Track & Field Also on the last weekend in October, the GPS Track & Field Championships were held at QSAC in Brisbane. It was a most successful event for the boys representing the School, as the team finished a very creditable seventh in a very strong field. At one point, late in the event, there were four points separating third from seventh. Throughout the competition, what was most notable to me was not the number of firsts we received (though there were numerous wins), but rather the consistency of our performance by finishing third, fourth and fifth on a very regular basis. In every event, the passion and strength of commitment in each of our competitors were also most evident. I extend my congratulations to all boys in our team and a thank you to all coaches and parents who assisted throughout the season. It is also fitting to acknowledge the large group of students who travelled to the competition to provide such enthusiastic and positive support to the Track & Field team.

Year 12 FarewellAs the Year 12 boys head to their final days of their secondary schooling, I would like to wish them all the very best as they move into the next phase of their lives. For many boys they end a long association with the School. They should be proud of their contribution to their School and

of their wide-ranging achievements whilst here. As they leave us as students, they do move on to become members of another important group in the School community as our youngest Old Boys.

End of year / farewellAs my time at the School is coming to an end, I wish to thank all members of the Toowoomba Grammar School Community for their support over the last eleven years. I have always considered it to be a great privilege and honour to serve this community as Deputy Headmaster and will look back on my time at this wonderful school with immense fondness. I am going to miss TGS, as will my family.

On my arrival in 2007, I wrote the following in my first newsletter article: “Since commencing, I have made a number of observations that have caught my attention. I shared these with the students in my first address. The three items that initially have taken my interest are connection, communication and commitment. Even in my first few weeks I have been struck by the sense of community evident at Toowoomba Grammar School. The connection that students, their families and staff have with the School is quite tangible. People are immensely proud of their association with Toowoomba Grammar School, they care for one another and there appears to be a real bond to this community. I have also noticed the considerate, polite manner in which people talk to each other. Communicating in this way is surely a positive sign of respect for one another. Commitment to excellence in all endeavours, with particular focus on academic success, and student commitment to the broad range of school activities available are also clearly noticeable to the newcomer.” This has never changed for me – connection, communication and commitment are what sets this School apart and will continue to provide a bedrock for the future successes of the School.

As the School year draws to a close, I thank the boys for the wonderful endeavour, commitment and spirit they demonstrated all year. It is impossible for the boys to do much of what they do without the input, support and dedication of academic, administrative and grounds staff – I wish to acknowledge their fine work.

I hope that you have a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break and have the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends.

Yours sincerely

Timothy J. KellyDeputy Headmaster

From the Head of Senior SchoolIt is that time of the year where we farewell the Class of 2017. I wish to thank and congratulate the Year 12 graduates for the manner in which they have approached their final year at the School. They have worked hard on their studies throughout the year and I hope they are pleased with, and proud of, their results. I have been particularly impressed with their leadership efforts and initiatives and especially their spirit and support of boys representing the School in our co-curricular program. Following their final examinations, the boys will enjoy a program of activities and special events in their last week of school, culminating with the Year 12 Final Assembly and Formal. I sincerely wish all Year 12 graduates the best for their future.

For boys in Years 7 to 11, their focus now turns to end of semester examinations and assessment and I hope all boys complete the 2017 school year by maintaining their very best efforts and standards. Following the completion of examinations on Monday, 20 November, classes will resume for the final three days of school and the House Touch Football competition will be conducted on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. School will conclude at 3.10pm on Thursday with the travel day for boarders scheduled for Friday, 24 November.

As the end of the school year nears, we look forward to many key events, such as Speech Day, the Co-Curricular Awards Assembly and the Year 12 Final Assembly, to celebrate the many individual achievements and group highlights for the year. I would like to congratulate all boys who have been committed and contributed to the extensive academic, co-curricular, House and service activities on offer throughout the year. Thank you also to all parents who have supported their son’s endeavours and promoted the respective School programs.

Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday CampThe Sony Camp is held on the first weekend of the September holidays where a large number of Year 11 students take on the responsibility of looking after a child with a disability. The Camp was a great success this year largely attributed to the work of 20 volunteer Year 12 students who organised and conducted most of the activities during the Camp. I am very grateful to the Year 12 boys who gave up their holiday time to volunteer their assistance and make the Sony Camp such a success.

House Competition - DiligenceNot only do boys work hard for their own benefit, but the House Competition also includes rewarding the House with the best diligence overall. When awarding points for the Headmaster’s Shield, data is considered from Terms 1, 2 and 3. The final House Diligence results for 2017 are as follows:

Congratulations to Stephens House for an impressive display in this regard.

House Singing CompetitionThe House Singing Competition took place in Week 4 and was the final event in the Headmaster’s Shield for 2017. The compulsory song performed by all boys from each House was “Anthem” from the musical “Chess”. There were some entertaining performances of the second (chosen) song by the Houses. The House Singing Competition is a challenging and worthwhile event with credit due to the House staff and the Senior leaders for preparing their Houses for this occasion. Groom House is to be commended on being judged the winning House, with Boyce House a very close second place.

Headmaster’s ShieldThe Headmaster’s Shield was hotly contested this year with the Champion House being decided in the final two activities. Overall, Boyce House finished victorious for 2017, maintaining their hold on the Shield for 2 years in a row. Congratulations to all boys for the spirited way they competed in the various inter-House competitions throughout the year. The final points tally is shown below.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Housemasters and Assistant Housemasters for showing tremendous dedication in their roles. The Housemasters have responsibility that extends beyond organising House activities and competing in House competitions;

they are the key pastoral care points of contact for boys and parents. They strive to get to know all boys in their House, showing real interest in their progress and achievements. I thank the Housemasters for their tireless efforts this year.

GPS Track and Field ChampionshipsFor many, the GPS Track and Field Championships are the highlight of the GPS Sports calendar. I would like to congratulate all the boys who competed and supported the athletes at this great event. The efforts by our athletes were outstanding and similarly the support shown by the boys in the stands was enthusiastic and encouraging. It was a great all round team effort.

Start of School – 2018Uniform and Appearance - As the start of the new school year approaches in January, I would expect all boys to consider their appearance and be prepared for the first day back at school. Hats - Some boys will either need to spend time reshaping their school akubra or consider purchasing a new one. The brim of the akubra is expected to be flat. School akubras with holes or with the trim of the brim missing will need replacing.Hair – Hair should be cut to the one length and the fringe not below the eyebrows; no extremes of hairstyles are acceptable. Blazer Dress – Boys must secure the top button of their white shirt and the buttons on the cuffs when wearing Blazer Dress. Please check

the size of shirts and ensure they can be comfortably worn with these top buttons secured.

School Commencement Events, 2018Monday, 22 January 2018 – New Boys’ Orientation and return of boarders. Tuesday, 23 January 2018 – School commences with a School Assembly for all boys at 8:30am. Dress is Blues uniform.Friday, 26 January 2018 – Australia Day Public Holiday.

End of Year DepartureI appreciate the consideration shown by parents at the end of last term to avoid early leave requests. The final week of Term 4 for boys in Years 7-11 will include examinations on Monday, normal classes on Tuesday to Thursday with the House Touch Football competition being conducted in the afternoon. The final lessons are very important for boys to receive results and feedback from their latest assessment and consider their student profile for each subject. School finishes for the year at 3.10pm, Thursday, 23 November and boys should be in attendance until this time.

I wish all from our school community a safe and enjoyable holiday period. I look forward to the boys returning for another busy and productive year in 2018.

From the Head of Junior SchoolDear Parents

The final few days of the school year are upon us which involves various celebrations and excitement for staff and students. Our Year 6 boys recently held their annual Fair, with these boys running many activities for the rest of the Junior School students. This event raises funds for the Year 6 gift to the School and is always an enjoyable occasion.

Head of Junior School

Public Speaking CompetitionThe Junior School Public Speaking Competition took place during the first few weeks of the term, with every boy from Prep to Year 6 being involved. Standing up and speaking in front of an audience is a life skill and one that many adults find confronting. By introducing public speaking to the boys from such a young age, our aim is to develop confident and competent public speakers throughout the school.

Within each class, a number of boys received highly commended certificates. Second place and third place in each class received a medallion and first place winners will receive a trophy and book voucher at Speech Day. Congratulations to the boys who received awards and to Stephens House for winning the House Shield for this competition.

Staff newsMrs Jeanette Morgan, one of our Prep teachers, will retire at the end of this school year. Over the past eleven years, Jeanette has very much created the Prep ‘flavour’ in the Junior School, making the educational program into something that suits young boys. I thank Jeanette for her many wonderful contributions to our school and her care of so many boys and families. We will farewell Jeanette appropriately in the final week of term and thank her in style.

Mrs Natalie Walker (Year 1 teacher) and her husband Andrew are the proud parents of their first child, a daughter, Isobel Laura, who

was born on Sunday 29 October. Congratulations to Natalie and Andrew on this most joyous news.

Mayoral School Achievement AwardsThe Mayoral School Achievement Awards ceremony was held recently. These annual awards recognise children who have persevered in times of adversity in primary and secondary schools across the Darling Downs. Congratulations to

Walter Tinkler (6V / boarder) who was the Junior School recipient this year. Walter moved away from home at the start of last year, and was the youngest boarder at Toowoomba Grammar School at the time. He has persevered with his school work, and always remained positive and optimistic being a fine role model for other students.

ConclusionI thank all members of the Junior School staff for their fine work and many contributions in 2017. The School is well supported by the parent body and I wish to express my appreciation for the support shown by parents on a daily basis. This certainly contributes to the strong sense of community that exists within the School. Finally, I thank the boys for their hard work and achievements during the year.

I wish all families an enjoyable, safe and relaxing holiday period, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Dr George Fielding attended Toowoomba Grammar School from 1944 -1948 and was appointed Senior Prefect in 1947 after the departure of the then Senior Prefect and was again appointed as Senior Prefect in 1948. He then went onto a successful career as a surgeon which included becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Head of Surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital, receiving his Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons as well as starting the Wesley Hospital Breast Clinic. In retirement, Dr Fielding completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in History. Dr Fielding certainly exemplifies the traits of diligence and application, which are recognised with this Award. To receive a Dr George Fielding Award, a student must receive a diligence award a minimum of 75% of his time in the Senior School. For the majority of the inaugural recipients, this meant they received a Diligence award no fewer than 8 times out of the possible ten opportunities since Year 8. To understand the significance of such an achievement, recall that to receive a Diligence award a boy must receive an average result of “very good” for work ethic with no more than 1 good on his report. To achieve this consistently over 5 years is certainly an achievement worth recognising. The boys are to be congratulated on this achievement.

Young Creator of the YearOne of the most enjoyable parts of my job is being able to witness the breadth and depth of talent within the School. The Young Creator of the Year Award has the evidence of the boys’ talent delivered to my doorstep. We had over 40 entries this year with everything from original compositions, short stories, photographs, original artworks, videos, Apps and inventions. The quality of the entries was so high that a number of boys received a Highly Recommended certificate and a movie voucher. The winner of the Innovation award was Fred Perrottet for his original design for a chopping knife. Mr Kirby judged this work as truly innovative and was impressed with the level of his workmanship. Brock Wendland received the award for creativity with his beautiful photograph.

Year 12 The Year 12 students have worked extremely hard and I am proud of the way they have completed their academic commitments. I know they are eagerly awaiting the official release of their QCS results on Wednesday 15 November. Students can access this through their Learning Account in QCAA student connect. This is also where the boys will be able to access their OP scores on Saturday 16 December. Please ask your son, when he next logs into his Learning Account, to change his email address from his School email to his personal email, to ensure he continues to be able to access this once he leaves School.

The Year 12 SAIs (Student Achievement Indicators) will be on display in the Library from 3:00pm on Wednesday 22 November and will be available for a week. SAIs are a numerical representation that place the

ChessThe State Secondary Schools’ Chess tournament was recently held at Churchie. Toowoomba Grammar School competed effectively and finished overall in 12th position out of 18 competing teams. This result represents the beginnings of a recovery by the team following the recent GPS season. I would like to thank our long serving coach, Mr Les Lord, for the preparation of the team leading into the competition.

A special mention must go to Year 11 boy Gaurav Ramnanan, who finished 13th overall out of approximately 100 players. Year 8 boy Flynn Taylor finished 55th despite only playing three games after filling in as a reserve for Tom Plant during the tournament.

Track and FieldAt the completion of the Regional Athletics trials, 27 TGS athletes were chosen to represent Darling Downs at the recent State Athletics

Championships held at QSAC. Unfortunately, injury and illness prevented three boys from competing.

The following TGS athletes achieved podium finishes:

Angus Davey 1st U15 Javelin 57.54mLachlan Dolzan 3rd U15 Hammer Throw 43.35mFynn Donaldson 3rd U17 2000m 6:51:87 minsWill Flynn 3rd U16 Javelin 51.33m

At the completion of the Championships, 13 of our boys were ranked in the top 10 in the State out of the 24 competitors. 95% of the TGS athletes were prepared to the extent that they were able to achieve Personal Bests (PBs) over the course of the four days of competition.

In the U18 3000m, Teketel Tyson had a collision on the first lap where another competitor fell over after bumping into him.

Teketel ran back and picked him up and then chased the pack. By the end of the race, Tek had managed 4th place and the boy he helped managed 2nd place. This display of sportsmanship will possibly be equated by certain readers of this newsletter’s audience with the famous effort of John Landy to assist the fallen Ron Clarke during a race at the Australian titles in 1956. It also serves to remind me that sportsmanship at Toowoomba Grammar School is an ideal we hold very strongly and I commend Teketel for his compassion and sporting attitude. It is a true reminder that, “… Toowoomba Grammar always plays the game….”

The recent GPS Track and Field Championships was the 100th carnival contested by the GPS Association. TGS demonstrated a much improved performance to finish in seventh place, 55.5 points clear of GT in eighth and only 10.5 points behind NC in sixth. In a tightly packed finish, TGS were only 36 points off 3rd place. 36 Personal Bests (PBs) were set across the 69 events. This represents a wonderful effort by all coaches and boys and it is great to see Track and Field resurgent at the School and already setting goals for Season 2018.

The following boys were first place getters for TGS at the Championships:

Ronin Hassall U16 Shot PutPatrick McKay U15 Triple Jump and U15 Long JumpOllie Shuttleworth U14 Triple JumpArchie Steele U14 JavelinThe U16 4x 100m Relay

Last but not least, the only record set on the night was by State U15 Javelin Champion, Angus Davey (Year 10), who threw an incredible 64.77m, to win the U15 Javelin, smashing a record which had stood for 15 years by 4m 20cm.

VolleyballToowoomba Grammar School Volleyball teams enjoyed success in the second season of the local Toowoomba Volleyball Association Premier League, with all teams making the finals. Congratulations to the following teams:

First place - Men’s AA Reserve Grade Year 11AThird place - Men’s AA Reserve Grade Year 12Second place - Men’s B Grade Year 11B First place - Men’s C Grade Year 9Second place Men’s C Grade Year 8.

This was an excellent lead up to the Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup for the four teams participating in Melbourne in December. The coaching staff, Mr Siebenhausen, Mr Kirby and Mr Bullock, are to be thanked for their efforts during the season.

GPS training for the A and B squads has also started this term, with coaches keen to continue to develop skills and prepare to select teams for 2018. There are also a few trial matches against Harristown State High School organised at the end of the term.

Finally, thank you to all who participated in the Melbourne Cup event held at the Pavilion. It was great to see so many happy faces leave at the end of the day. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Volleyball Supporters’ Group which organised a great day for all and have shown just how committed they are to benefiting the boys at the school.

In closingOn the occasion of the final newsletter for 2017, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved with TGS Sport and Activities – internal and external coaches, Directors and administrators, Old Boys, Parents and Friends for their efforts on behalf of the boys this year. I wish to pay particular credit to my Assistant , Mrs Sandy Mathies, for her wonderful “can do” attitude and unbridled enthusiasm for all aspects of Sport and Activities at TGS. To all in the wider TGS Community, best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

From the Director of Boarding

We have also had our Boarder Sevens Competition which has been hotly contested and enjoyed by the boys. The Gym has also been attended by many on Friday nights and the Aquatic Centre has been opened on a number of Sunday afternoons. From my observation, the boys who participate in these activities have had a great time and we are definitely looking to offer a wide variety of recreation activities again next year.

Congratulations to our Year 12 boarders who are soon to finish their schooling days. They have contributed through their leadership in what has been a fine year in the School’s history. These young men have provided an excellent example in the Boarding Houses and they will be missed by the younger boarders.

As this is my last Newsletter article for the year there are a number of people I wish to acknowledge. Firstly, I would like to thank all the Boarding Staff for their work throughout this year. It is a demanding job and I feel fortunate to work with people who are committed to looking after our boarders and helping them to develop as young men. I would also like to acknowledge the spouses and children of our Boarding Staff who help us to provide a family feel in our Boarding Houses. Thanks also to the staff in the Health Centre and our Catering and laundry staff. These men and women work diligently to help our boarders and often go above and beyond the call of duty to help our young men. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.

I would also like to acknowledge the Boarder Parents’ Support Group for their ongoing assistance and support of all things boarding at Toowoomba Grammar School. Thank you especially to Anita Perry who has done an outstanding job as President this year. Thank you also to the Parent Representatives from each House, but I would like to particularly acknowledge those who are finishing up in the role this year: Gaylene Stanford (Stephens House Rep and Secretary) and Sally Lahey (Mackintosh House Rep). I really appreciate the positive and constructive support provided by this parent group and look forward to working with the new Committee next year.

I would like to wish everyone in our boarding community a safe and enjoyable Christmas period and I look forward to a great year ahead in 2018.

Music Extension Concert - Friday, 6 September, 7:00pm Old HallWe began the Term with a lovely showcase of our Year 12 Music Extension students demonstrating their mastery of their chosen specialization in an intimate concert in the Old Hall. I applaud all students involved in the levels they attained.

Take Note Concert - Friday, 13 October, 7:00pm Assembly HallOur major showcase of the year, the Take Note Concert, was presented on Friday, 13 October in the Assembly Hall and we were thrilled with the performance levels of all ensembles involved. Fred Perrottet (Leader of the Arts) led the team in a wonderful display and showcase allowing over 150 Performance students to display their talents across 16 different ensembles. A special thank you to all the wonderful Performing Arts Staff and supporters for an incredible night.

Term Four has been absolutely hectic but wonderfully full of amazing performances and I thank all staff, students and parents involved collectively. Have a look at the list below just to see how engaged and amazing our Performing Arts students and staff have been in this short but action packed Term.

The Rock Band Showcase was held on Saturday 20

October and was a massive success with six school

bands taking part.

Paul Moreton Concert - Tuesday, 17 October, 7:00pm Graham Centre, Downlands CollegeThe Grammarphones, Choir and Xpression (Glennie/Grammar) all took part in the annual Paul Morton Choral Festival alongside hundreds of other Toowoomba singers on Tuesday, 17 October. All three ensembles performed magnificently and were very well received. The finale of the concert is always a highlight where all singers combine together for a massed performance. Well done to all students who participated.

Rock Band Showcase - Friday, 20 October, Assembly HallThe Rock Band Showcase was held on Saturday 20 October and was a massive success with six school bands taking part. Many of these were independently formed by TGS students including ‘Electric Friday’, ‘The G-strings’, ‘Insect Billy’ and the Year 9 class team ‘Sandford’s Boiz’. All performed to a very high standard. Following these bands, we had our two RnB ensembles and the night culminated with our special guest act ‘Dazed and Confused’ including Drummer Mark, current student Tom Bellinger and two old boys from the 2015 alumni, George Mundell and George Bellinger, proving that great music and experiences can continue beyond school. A big thank you to all involved in the success of the evening particularly Mr Sandford and Mr Willis.

Wind Orchestra - Cadet March Out Parade – Thursday, 26 OctoberCongratulations to Mr McKenzie and the Wind Orchestra for a wonderful performance as part of the Cadet Passing Out Parade held on Thursday 26 October. The students performed admirably throughout the whole parade under the difficult conditions of an open air venue.

‘The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time’ – Thursday, 26 October, Armitage CentreThe Armitage Centre was the venue for TiGAA’s major production for the year ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time ‘and a capacity audience witnessed Drama at its finest. Patrick Thomson was utterly mesmerising in the demanding lead role and all the very skilled young actors from the TGS Acting Academy delivered stunning performances which were enhanced by Mr Dalamaras’ visuals and the masterful direction of Mrs Eylece Blaikie (Head of Arts and TiGAA Director). Congratulations to all on a fantastic evening.

String Soirée - Friday, 27 October, 5:00pm Empire Church TheatreThe Empire Church Theatre was the venue for the String Soirée which turned out to be a lovely late afternoon concert. The audience enjoyed beautiful nibbles supplied by the TGS Kitchen, and listened to our very talented String Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble students perform both collectively and individually in a beautifully varied but always impressive program. We were joined at the Soirée by the young string students from the Junior School and amongst highlights of the evening I must include a combined lower string ensemble directed by ‘cello and bass teacher Mr Eadric Ayres. In addition, our wonderful String Orchestra director Mrs Celia Egerton directed a fully combined orchestra as a terrific finale. Congratulations to Mrs Egerton, Mr Ayres, Mr Meppem, Mr Beezley and all students involved in yet another magnificent night of music making.

Macbeth – Monday, 6 and Tuesday, 7 November Henderson Art and Drama CentreA re-imagined contemporary version of ‘Macbeth’ was successfully performed in the Henderson Art and Drama Centre over two nights at the beginning of November. The Year 11 Drama students were challenged to blend the language of Shakespeare with a youthful understanding of the text. Performing six sell out shows over two nights, the enthralled audience moved through the play taking them on a physical journey as they dodged swords fights to piece the action in the three scenes together. The boys were joined by students, Ruby Sanders and Zoe Hulme-Peake, both of whom played the role of Lady Macbeth in different scenes of the performance.

Empire Theatre Bursary - Matthew Murphy, Year 9 StephensCongratulations to Matthew Murphy for securing an Empire Theatre Youth Bursary to attend the Queensland Theatre Residency week during the September 2018 school holidays. This is a wonderful achievement for this young talented actor.

Year 6 MusiciansIt has been wonderful in the past week to have our Year 6 musicians attend rehearsals with our Senior School ensembles to give them a sense of what it will be like next year and foster connection with the older students who will soon be their performance peers.

GPS Music Showcase 2018 - Thursday, 22 February, 2018, QPAC BrisbaneCongratulations to the following 26 boys for successfully being selected for next year’s GPS Music Showcase. The standard of application was even higher than usual so for all these to be included is a great achievement. The 2018 Music Showcase is a special event to mark the 100th anniversary of the GPS Association and, as such, will contain a special feature entitled the ‘Carmina Burana Project’, where hundreds of students along with a select group of teachers and professional musicians will perform excerpts from Karl Orff’s famous work ‘Carmina Burana’. In addition, the Concert Band will be performing with the baton of Dr Peter Morris from the Conservatorium. This concert on 22 February at the QPAC Concert Hall should not be missed.

Successful applicants were:

Year 12 2017As in the past, we have been blessed with an amazing group of young men who have provided great leadership. Our Arts Leader, Fred Perrottet, and his team of leaders, and all members of the Year 12 cohort should be proud of their efforts and have consistently delivered through demonstrating to the younger boys how to be a valued member of each team ‘ensemble’. They have been integral to the success of the department. I thank them wholeheartedly for all they have done and wish each and every one of them all the best with their future direction and sincerely hope that the Arts is something that they keep close to their heart. I have no doubt they will look back upon these days with satisfaction and pride. All the best in your new directions gentlemen.

Examination ResultsWe congratulate the following secondary students for wonderful results in the recent Trinity College examinations for woodwind and strings. We also submitted this year an ensemble so congratulations to the Clarinet Choir for wonderful results. My thanks go to Melissa Buchholz for these wonderful results. Many other examinations in a number of areas are taking place at the moment and we look forward to sharing these results when they come to hand.

Celia EgertonWe will be saying farewell to our String Ensembles Director and Instructor of Upper Strings – Mrs Celia Egerton at the end of the year. Celia has been with us for five years and she has been an absolute powerhouse with our strings program, particularly building an incredible Junior School ensemble, and of course the emergence and work of our Senior Quartets has been at the very highest level. We are sad to see her moving on but wish her all the very best with what we all know will be very successful future endeavours.

Eadric AyresThis year we have been privileged to have Mr Eadric Ayres as our lower strings specialist. Mr Ayres has been absolutely inspiring in his work with our cello and double bass students. Mr Ayres is returning to radio work and Brisbane based schools in 2018 and we wish him all the very best and thank him for the amazing work he has done with the boys this year.

Neil Roche-Kelly Signing OffIt is now time to sign off and as we reach the end of the Term, and indeed, for me, the end of a long and rewarding association with TGS. I would like to finish by thanking everyone who has assisted the development of the Arts at Toowoomba Grammar School. Thank you to all the wonderful students who have ‘treaded our boards’, the incredible Music and Drama staff, the supportive parents and all who have ensured that this school has a rich legacy of excellence in Arts. I look back with nothing but pride and satisfaction at all the amazing things that have been achieved over the years. I am looking forward to keeping in contact with many people and I can’t wait to see all the wonderful things that will be achieved in the near future. I wish all students a happy and successful progression into next year, and strongly urge you all to ‘keep your passion for the Arts alive and kicking’. Thank you to the parents for all the dedication and encouragement you have shown your sons and your support for the Arts at Toowoomba Grammar School.

Whilst the competition was running we had a round robin of participants who also participated in shooting with the Toowoomba Pistol Club using a 22 pistol in an enclosed environment at the Range.

Winners from this competition were as follows:a. First: Oliver Grayb. Second: Nicholas Galeac. Third: Joseph Nugent

Again we thank John Gray and the volunteers from the Toowoomba Pistol Club for providing this opportunity to the participants.

Our bivouac this term was Exercise Beersheba, held at Emu Gully Outdoor Adventure Group at Helidon. Unfortunately, due to the extreme wet weather, we cancelled the Saturday program although the Sunday program was not affected. The cadets participated in a number of team building activities where they were challenged to complete different tasks. The program was focused on ANZAC themes providing the cadets with a renewed understanding of the sacrifice that our forefathers put into protecting our country. The goals set for the day (team work, challenging themselves, making new friends), provided the cadets with lessons on how they can apply them to everyday situations. The two culminating challenges were the truck pull and a re-enactment of the Battle of the Nek at Gallipoli. The peer camaraderie was magnificent which provided enthusiasm and energy for each activity.

On Sunday 8 October 33 students from TGS, Fairholme College and The Glennie School and 4 staff participated in our Annual Marksmanship Competition held at Helidon Firing Range.

On Thursday 26 October the Cadet Unit held its Annual March Out Parade. This year was special as we paraded with the Corp Banner, The Duke of Edinburgh Banner which came up from Canberra Headquarters. Colonel Tara Bucknall, the Corp Deputy Commander was the Reviewing Officer and Colonel Darryn Potter the Brigade Commander was a special guest. The Cadet Parade was outstanding and the cadets are to be commended for their efforts. We also took the opportunity of the good weather to hold our delayed 125th Anniversary photograph outside School House. This photograph is a re-enactment of a similar photograph taken in 1910. Many of those young men in that photograph would have enlisted in the First World War, some to pay the supreme sacrifice.

On Saturday 28 October, we held our Annual Dining Out Night in the Pavilion with Colonel James Brown, the Commandant from Oakey Army Aviation Training Centre, as our Guest Speaker. The evening was a farewell to our graduating Year 12 cadets.

The Unit has finished its training for the year except for the 16 cadets going on leadership promotional courses during the holidays. These courses include the Cadet Under Officers/ Senior Leaders and Junior Leaders Course two and are being conducted at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera.

Finally, I wish to make a public thank you to Mr Ray Morgan. Ray has been with the Unit for seven years and the work he has done for the Unit has been of enormous benefit to the boys and the School.

When speaking of Ray, David Bell, the School’s Director of Sport and Activities, said, ‘With a distinguished military career behind him which saw him awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal (CSM) for his operational service in East Timor, the TGSACU was very fortunate to gain a figure such as Ray on its ORBAT once he “enlisted” as a TGS teacher.’ Ray a big thank you from the Cadets and Officers, ‘You are a Legend’.

The Australian Jobs 2017 report from the Australian Government Department of Employment gives a summary of employment trends in Australia. It has important messages about career and study planning for young Australians. Study and training after Year 10 link to better employment prospects and the higher the level of study, the higher the chance of participation in employment across adult life. • Bachelor degree 86.9% • Diploma 84.4% • Certificate III or IV 85.3% • Year 12 or equivalent 76.2% • Year 11 66.6% • Year 10 55.7%

The report highlights the value of Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications alongside academic choices and shows that workers with higher qualifications are likely to earn higher incomes. Where are the jobs? This report lists the following as the largest employing industries - health care and social assistance, retail trade, construction and professional, scientific and technical services. Industries which have created the largest numbers of new jobs are health care and social services, professional, scientific and technical services, education and training and accommodation and food services. https://docs.employment.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/australianjobs2017.pdf

From the School Counsellor

In life, we experience a number of changes and transitions that are inevitable. In the school setting, students are faced with natural and unexpected changes on a regular basis. What can be difficult about managing transitions is that their commencement often leaves us with a mix of anxiety, excitement, fear and trepidation. Whilst this can lead to the exploration of new roles, choices or opportunities, we are essentially left in an emotional space where we have cut ties with what is known, and have not yet settled into what is new. This space of The Unknown can present challenges and difficulties which demand us to respond in new ways.

As the school year draws to a close, I thought it important that students be made aware of some strategies to support navigating the transition to their next life stage:1. Expect to feel lost and uncertain – Remember that transition

thrusts us into an unknown emotional state, so feeling lost or uncertain as to ‘what might come next’ is likely and normal. This may be more apparent when the change is beyond our control, such as separation of our parents or receiving a lesser than expected grade, leading to a forced transition or sudden change in our plans. What is useful in such times is to focus on understanding the change, whilst considering elements of control that we have in moving forward to a new future. Remember we are out of our comfort zone at these times, so it is ok not to know all the answers.

2. Embrace the new chapter – It is important at times of transition to acknowledge and appreciate what has been, whilst looking forward to the future. Keeping in mind that with every change an opportunity is provided for a fresh start that can go a long way in not getting weighed down by the past. Whilst some transitions may bring about a sense of grief, every experience of grief brings an opportunity for growth and learning.

3. Think optimistically – Focus on the positive outcomes that might result from the transition. This could include making a new friend, finishing university or even the sense of accomplishment you may feel when you look back on a tough time and are proud of how you got through it.

4. Set some clear and attainable goals – Being proactive at times of transition and setting some goals for what you wish to achieve supports the move towards our new direction. This also means it is important not to be too hard on yourself. Expect that goals and timeframes are flexible, and remind yourself that what is most important is the effort you put in.

5. Manage stress – Get to know your positive coping strategies and put them into practice during times of transition. This could include hanging out with friends, engaging in a hobby, exercising or exploring relaxation strategies. When we take care of ourselves and manage our stress well, we are less likely to feel overwhelmed and more readily equipped to problem solve any new challenges that might come our way.

6. Seek support – We are social creatures and embracing others in our lives works wonders in facilitating smooth transitions. When we are feeling lonely or overwhelmed, connecting with people can assist us to gain perspective, have fun or even take our mind off things for a short time.

As we all eagerly await the completion of the school year, I would like to take the time to wish all students and their families a smooth and successful transition through to 2018.
