Better health care ofmothers and children
In its drive for longevity and good healthof the people, the Ministry of Health isapproaching three methods: giving healtheducation talks across the nation including ruralareas, prevention and control of diseases, andeffective treatment.
In this regard, health care of mothers andchildren including newborns is centre stagewith the aim of reducing epidemic outbreaksand mortality rates of mothers, newly-bornbabies and under-one-year children inMyanmar.
The government is working hard toachieve one of the millennium developmentgoals for health—to reduce maternal mortalityrate of 1990 by four-thirds by 2015.
Annually, about 1.3 million women arepregnant in Myanmar, and priority is given toimprovement of health care for mothers andnewborns and safe births.
Maternal and child health care covershealth education talks, care of pregnant women, pasteurization methods for systematic births, care of mothers and under-fives, fulfillingnutritional requirements of mothers and babies, and prevention and control of diseases.
Systematic breastfeeding plays animportant role in taking care of mothers andchildren. So, children are to be breastfed andfed additional foods till they turn two years.
Indeed, children are the future of thenation. Only when mothers and children are ingood health will they have high physical andmental prowers.
Therefore, the entire people should extenda helping hand to health staff in improving thehealth standard of mothers and children.

CAMBRIDGE, 17 Oct—Determiningthe weight of a distant star usually yieldsjust an estimate, but one US scientistsays in special cases a star can be“weighed” directly.
Astronomers have found more than90 planets that cross in front of, ortransit, their stars, and by measuring theamount of starlight that’s blocked, theycan calculate how big the planet isrelative to the star. But they can’t knowexactly how big the planet is, becausethey can only estimate the size and themass of the star, scientists at theHarvard-Smithsonian Centre forAstrophysics say.
Research by center astrophysicistDavid Kipping shows that in some cases, the exact weight can be determined, aninstitute release says. If the star has aplanet, and that planet has a moon, andboth of them cross in front of their star, their sizes and orbits and the weight ofthe star can be calculated, Kipping says.“Basically, we measure the orbits of theplanet around the star and the moonaround the planet,” he says. “Thenthrough Kepler’s Laws of Motion, it’spossible to calculate the mass of thestar.”—Internet

LONDON, 17 Oct— Two womenhave given birth to healthy babies fromeggs screened for genetic defectsbefore being implanted in the womb,in a study of a new technique thatcould improve the success rate of in-vitro fertilization.

however, IT is in placeof the industry to achievethe goal. Therefore, many countries are en-joying development onthe ground of IT out-sourcing, and their suc-cess is, indeed, some-thing to be emulated.
Technologies asso-ciated with electronicsand industry in combi-nation are essential forbuilding a modern na-tion. It is also needed to
be able to apply nano-technologies to producesophisticated electronicsand mineral and alloyproducts.
Myanmar is trying toachieve soon the goal ofnational industrializa-tion. In this regard, thenation is improving the
agricultural sector. Now,Myanmar has taken thefirst step towards thegoal and has thepotential for sustainabledevelopment. Withoutdoubt, Myanmar willbecome a peaceful ,modern and developedindustrialized country inthe future.
The government isencouraging IT-basedproduction process toput the nation on the
threshold of sustainableeconomic development.Myanmar is now work-ing hard to get advancedindustries and technolo-gies, while encouragingdevelopment of IT andresearch. In this case, theMinistry of Science andTechnology is to play a
leading role in produc-ing a growing number ofengineers in the fields ofproduction, innovationand research. Moreover,in line with the economicand social reforms of thenation, the governmentis in pursuit of the ob-jective of upgrading allits technological univer-sities to the level of topuniversities of ASEAN.The Technological Uni-versi ty (Yatanarpon
Cyber City) is designedto cooperate with inter-national universities soas to produce experts inthe fields of technologyand research.
Technological Uni-versi ty (YatanarponCyber City) is also in-tended to produce hu-
man resources capable ofproducing new productswith innovations basedon ICT, electronics, communication, state-of-the-art technologiesfor production ofmachines, and advancedtechnologies forproduction of heavyequipment. Theuniversity will soonbegin to produce expertsof various fields.
The university is
constituted with four de-partments, under whichof it are 15 research .
Universities aroundthe world focus oninternational coopera-tion and innovation inthe education sector.China, India andSingapore, for instance,
are trying their utmostto produce experts inadvanced technologies. So, these countries haveAsia’s leadinguniversities on researchthat can penetrate theworld’s education. Theydeal with world leadingorganizations throughstudent exchange andresearch. Therefore,Myanmar is to take intoconsiderat ion pro-duct ion of newgenerations of produc-tion engineers throughinternational coopera-tion and research.

Manager U Kya Win of Kunlong District PerennialCrops Enterprise said that Kunlong District had 8436acres of rubber farms, 1500 acres of which were beingharvested. It was such a large area of rubber farms thatit was like a man-made forest. All the vacant lands inKunlong, Hopang, Namtit and Mongmao regions arecovered with rubbers farms with a total area of thou-sands of acres.
Up to 1988, those regions did not see anyrubber plantations. Only in 1990, did they see rubberfarms grown as a poppy-substitute plant by the Min-istry of Progress of Border Areas and National Racesand Development Affairs and the Ministry of Agricul-ture and Irrigation in compliance with the guidance ofthe Head of State. U Kyan Par reclaimed 385 acres offallow lands and put them under rubber in ShwewahVillage in 1997. He started to tap latex in 2004. China close to Hopang, and he therefore entered rubberfarming; that before that he had used to grow and tradecrops; that then the acreage of mature rubber plantationswas growing, that he chose rubber farming as majorbusiness; and that his success was due to the applicationof agricultural methods provided by the enterprise. Theface price of rubber, also known as white gold, is twomillion to three million kyats a ton. It is in high demandworldwide. Now, rubber farming is very popular inMyanmar thanks to the encouragement of the govern-ment, technical assistance of the Ministry of Agricul-ture and Irrigation, and interest of entrepreneurs.
The ministry yearly honours outstanding town-ships, farmers, workers and entrepreneurs in the agricul-tural field. World Food Day commemorative awards forrubber farming went to U Shauk Shin, U Kyin Wan andU Maung Myint of Hopang Township in previous years. This year, U Kyan Par won the award. There are manyother entrepreneurs trying to achieve the award.
So, I would like to urge farmers to work harderto achieve all-round development in the agriculturalsector, making good use of the encouragement of thegovernment, and assistance of relevant ministries.

Memory improves more with testingmemory can drasticallyincrease the likelihoodthat you’ll be able toremember thatinformation again later,”Kent State psychologistKatherine Rawson says.
Testing is good formemory because itsupports more effectiveencoding strategies, shesays.
“Given that hundredsof experiments have beenconducted to establish theeffects of testing onlearning, it’s surprisingthat we know very littleabout why testingimproves memory,” shesays.
In an experiment, subjects were tested on a
foreign languagevocabulary, like theSwahili-English word pairwingu/cloud.
“To learn this item, you could just repeat it overand over to yourself eachtime you studied it, but itturns out that’s not aparticularly effectivestrategy for committingsomething to memory,”Rawson says.
“A more effectivestrategy is to develop akeyword that connects theforeign language wordwith the English word.‘Wingu’ sounds like‘wing’, birds have wingsand fly in the ‘clouds’,”she says.
Testing is moreconducive to keywordformation than studyalone, she says.

With a maximum alti-tude of no higher than 550meters above sea level, much lower than the ex-isting trans-Alps tunnels, the Gotthard is designed
for high-speed passengerand cargo trains. It is ex-pected the amount offreight will be doubled toaround 40 million tonesper year, once the newlink is opened, backingthe EU’s environmentalefforts to move freightfrom road to rail.
To achieve the engi-neering marvel, an esti-mated 24 million tonnesof rocks have been exca-vated, which, according toSwiss media, is theequivalent of five timesthe volume of the GreatPyramid of Giza.

New data
on effects
of alcohol
during
pregnancy
LONDON, 17 Oct—Scientific data continue to indicate that higher intake of alcoholduring pregnancy adversely affects the fetus, and could lead to very severe developmentalor other problems in the child. However, most recent publications show little or noeffects of occasional or light drinking by the mother during pregnancy. The studies alsodemonstrate how socio-economic, education, and other lifestyle factors of the mothermay have large effects on the health of the fetus and child; these must be consideredwhen evaluating the potential effects of alcohol during pregnancy.
A very large population-based observational study from the UK found that at theage of 5 years, the children of women who reported light (no more than 1-2 units ofalcohol per week or per occasion) drinking did not show any evidence of impairmenton testing for behavioral and emotional problems or cognitive ability. There was atendency for the male children of women reporting “heavy/binge” drinking duringpregnancy (7 or more units per week or 6 or more units per occasion) to have poorerbehavioural scores, but the effects were less clear among female offspring.

This little piggy went to market — to pay off aRussian woman’s overdue debt to a bank.
Court officers in far eastern Russia have seized apiglet from a woman who owes a bank 13,000 roubles($432) and put it up for sale to recuperate some of themoney, the regional branch of the Federal BailiffsService said on Thursday.
The woman had been given the seven-month-oldpiglet for safekeeping, but it was taken away after acourt survey of her property found it to be her mostvaluable possession, the bailiffs service said in astatement.
The piglet was seized after the woman failed tocomply with a court order to pay off her debt within 10days, it said. Consumer debt in Russia has crippledlocal economies in some of the country’s poor ruraland industrial areas, which have been hardest hit by theeconomic crisis that followed nearly a decade of risingliving standards.
