Better transport and regional development areinterrelated. Better transport contributes not only toimproving socio-economic status of local people butalso to having more relationships among the nationalbrethren.

Before 1988, there were no motor ways inborder areas—even in Ayeyawady Division andRakhine State due to poor transport. So, people hadto rely solely on waterway and airway. Most of theroads could not be easily used at any time people

wanted. Then, there existed tarred road and earthenroads, totaling over 20,000 miles. There were over-180-foot 198 bridges and under-180-foot 3,305bridges.

People’s Desire

Now, the rainy season has well set in, andit is the most opportune time to grow trees tohelp green the surrounding areas. Forestsand trees contribute substantially to climatepatterns and make the environment pleasantand green.

Deforestation is followed by climatechanges and shortage of water foragricultural purposes. It is in Myanmarpeople’s nature to cherish woodlands andgeographical features of the nation.

It is therefore mandatory not only forstaff members of the Forest Department butalso for the people to conserve forests andtrees in order to avert unnecessarydeforestation.

Today, respective ministries, townships, wards, wards and organizations holdmonsoon tree planting ceremonies on theirown on a broad scale around the Union.

The species of trees they grow are fruittrees and many others including mahogany, teak, ironwood, padauk (gum-kino),eucalyptus and mango.

By growing trees, we can gain a variety ofbenefits such as fruit, shade, wooden utensils, fresh mind, and good health.

Not only human beings but also birdsbenefit from forests, now that forests andtrees are natural habitats for birds, and theysomeway maintain species of birds.

Myanmar people live in the motto “Withlove, we grow trees annually for furthergreening”. Therefore, the people need notonly to grow trees for greening their regionsand the nation, but also to nurture the treesthey have planted.

US raises concern over Gulf oilwell seepage

NEW ORLEANS, 19 July— BP has raised hopes that nomore toxic crude will leak into the Gulf of Mexico, sayingit intends to keep its runaway oil well sealed until apermanent “kill” operation later this month.

The US government is granting extensions toexhaustive well tests on a 24-hour basis, but BP said thevalves on the containment cap that is staunching the flowwill remain shut as long as no leaks are discovered.

This could mark the beginning of the end of whatestimates suggest is the biggest oil spill ever, although thetrue damage from one of America’s worst environmentaldisasters might not be known for decades.

“Clearly we don’t want to reinitiate flow into theGulf if we don’t have to,” said BP chief operating officerDoug Suttles.

“We’re hopeful that if the encouraging signs continuewe’ll be able to continue the integrity test all the way tothe point where we get the well killed.”

The start of the two-week operation to plug the wellpermanently by pumping in heavy drilling fluids andthen cement is now less than two weeks away as engineershave only 100 feet (30 metres) left vertically to drill.

Night Sky’s great globular clustervisible in telescopes

NEW YORK, 19 July—A fascinating deep skyobject called the Great Globular Cluster can currentlybe found in telescopes looking nearly overhead onclear summer nights, and there’s good story behindhow it and other objects are classified.

How often in looking through books onastronomy have you noticed star clusters and nebulaedesignated by the letter M, followed by somenumber? For example: the famous AndromedaGalaxy is known as M31 and the Great Orion Nebulais M42.

The Great Globular Cluster is known as M13and sits the constellation Hercules. The ‘M’ standsfor the initial of the famed 18th century cometobserver, Charles Messier (1730-1817).

Messier was deeply interested in discoveringcomets but he was plagued by the same trouble thatbesets all comet hunters.

Many false-positive HIV test resultsfor those in AIDS vaccine trials

NEW JERSEY, 19 July—Almost halfof HIV-negative people who participatein clinical trials for HIV vaccines endup testing positive on routine HIV tests— even though they’re not actuallyinfected, a new study shows.

The reason: They underwent whatexperts call “vaccine-inducedseropositivity/reactivity” (VISP),meaning that they possess immunesystem antibodies to the virus but notthe virus itself. That’s an importantdistinction, since routine HIV screeninglooks for virus antibodies only. Expertspointed out that the results are not newor surprising, but simply underline the

delicacies of conducting trials into HIV/AIDS.

“You need to make sure to useother forms of testing for HIV, forexample, viral load or p24 antigen, notjust HIV antibodies. And peoplewho’ve been in trials need to knowtheir antibody status by the end of thetrial,” said Dr Michael Horberg, director of HIV/AIDS at KaiserPermanente in Santa Clara, Calif. “If itis a false positive but they do not haveHIV infection, that would be veryimportant for them to know, especiallyif they do repeat testing as part of goodpreventive health.”—Internet

Flu Vaccine via skin patchshows promise in mice

GEORGIA, 19 July—Wouldn’t it be nice if youcould get the flu vaccine through a stick-on skinpatch instead of a shot?

Experiments in mice show that using skinpatches containing tiny, painless “microneedles”to deliver the influenza vaccine may someday be aviable alternative to traditional shots.

The microneedles — less than 1 millimetre inlength, or about half the thickness of a nickel turnedon its side — dissolve into the skin and are smallenough that they don’t draw blood or cause pain, researchers said.

Development of roads and bridges in MyanmarByline:Maung Saw Win (Myanma Alin); Photos: Myanma Alin

(from page 1)Nowadays, new

roads and bridges, in-cluding four lane and sixlane roads have emergedfar and wide. Amongthem, these roads areMandalay-Myitkyina,M a n d a l a y - B h a m o ,Myitkyina-Putao, Hpa-a n - Z a r - t h a b y i n -Mawlamyine, Taunggyi-Ywangan-Hanmyintmo,Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana-Pinlaung, Sittway-An-Minbu, Kawthoung-B o k p y i n - D a w e i -Mawlamyine, Taungup-Maei-Kyaukpyu andMonywa-Hkamti motorroads.

For the developmentof the regions of the westbank of AyeyawadyRiver, Minbu-Seikpyu-Pakokku-Monywa mo-tor road and Minhla-Thayet-Pyay motorroads were constructed.There exist many roads:N a t m a u k - M a g w a y ,

M o n y w a - K a l e w a ,Toungoo-Pyay and roadsfrom Nay Pyi TawPyinmana toTaungdwingyi.

With respect topresent transport sector, over 70,000 miles ofroads, including concreteroads, tarred roads, gravelroads, hard roads andearthen have now existed.

The bridges all areall-weather ones. Peoplenow can go in a day. It islike a dream to see theemergence of bridgesacross the nation if com-pared with the past (be-fore 1988).

Regarding roads andbridges sectors, therewere 13,635 miles ofroads before 1988, butnow it has increased to21,361 miles and 2 fur-longs. In 2009-2010finical year, Ministry ofConstruction handed over1147 miles and one fur-long miles of roads to

Pinlaung (Kintha-Koegway) ( 20 miles andthree furlongs) in July.

In order that thecars can run smoothly,Ministry of Constructionhas upgraded 12 feet wideNay Pyi Taw Pyinmana-

There have nowemerged bridges cross-ing Ayeyawady River, namely Maubin,Nawaday, Dedaye andBo Myat Tun. In addtion,Balaminhtin, Anawrahta,Ayeyawady (Magway)and Yadanarbon (Man-dalay) bridges are underconstruction.

The rivers crossingbridges, including two onChindwin River, three onSitttoung River and fiveon Thanlwin River havebeen constructed. In theolden days, those regionshad to face difficulties intransport due to such bar-riers as mountains, riv-ers and creeks.

Although the regions

are so much close, it haddifficulties in transport.Due to emergence of thenetworks of roads andbridges, people can nowgo from Putao, the north-ern part of the country toKawthoung, the southernpart and from Kengtung, the eastern part toSittway, the western part. The development of roadsand bridges helps facili-tate that of a network ofUnion Road. At the sametime, rail roads andbridges have been con-structed to be a networkof road. There hasemerged a rail road, centered at Magway Di-vision, to the west bankof Ayeyawady River fromPathein and Kyangin-Pakokku-Kalay.

The west bank re-gions of AyeyawadyRiver, lagged behind inthe past, are no longerdifferent if comparedwith the east. It is wit-nessed that trading isswifter, and local peo-ple’s education, eco-nomic and health stand-ards and social statushave now improved.Peace is the base of thedevelopment. Only whenthe regions have peaceand stability, these re-gions will become de-veloped.

The government isimplementing infrastru-ctural developments inorder to be peaceful andnot to have much differ-ence among the nationalbrethrens. It can be saidthat regional develop-ment is a result of peaceand stability.

For the developmentof the country in the futureto have adequate transportinfrastructure, Public

Works is extending thenumber of roads andbridges. From 1988 to date,2,915 bridges (between100 feet and 180 feet) and240 bridges (over-180-foot) have been opened. Now, five AyeyawadyRiver crossing bridges arebeing built, four of themare rail-cum-road and oneof them is only two lanemotor roads. For havingbetter transport betweenYangon Division andAyeyawady Division,Ayeyawady Bridge(Nyaungdon), which is arail-cum-road, is built pass-ing Ayeyawady nearNyaungdon. It has 9,382-foot- long two lane motorway and 10,377-foot-longone rail road.

FARNBOROUGH, 19 July—An unmanned solar-powered plane has set a record by remaining aloftfor seven straight days, flying day and night, itsdesigners say.

The “Zephyr” drone, developed by Britishdefense technology company QinetiQ inFarnborough, England, took off from the US Army’sYuma Proving Ground in Arizona on 9 July, CNNreported.

It was still flying at the weekend, and itsdesigners say they hope it can remain airborne foranother seven days, the US news network said.

“It’s extremely exciting,” Zephyr programmedirector Jon Saltmarsh said. “What we now have isan eternal plane. It has the same amount of fuel atthe start of one day as it does at the start of another.”

The Zephyr project was conceived in 2001 andfunded by the United Kingdom’s Ministry ofDefence.

Saltmarsh says the aircraft demonstratesgenuine military utility.

“It has the persistence to stay up there for longperiods of time and it carries payloads that aredoing things that the military will find useful,” hesaid.

The Zephyr weighs just 117 pounds, has awingspan of 74 feet and a wing area of about 323square feet.

The top side of the wing is covered in solarpanels thinner than a sheet of paper, CNN reported.

Global biodiversity conference opens inIndonesia

JAKARTA, 19 July — The 2010 International Meeting of the Association ofTropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) opened on Monday in Indonesia’sBali Province amid growing concerns that the world is facing a biodiversity crisison an unprecedented scale, a press statement said here.

Theme of this year’s meeting is Tropical biodiversity: surviving the food, energy and climate crisis, as habitat destruction from agricultural expansion andclimate change is likely to lead to the mass extinction of irreplaceable plant andanimal species.

“Crisis is a much overused term,” said Dr Terry Sunderland of the Bogor basedCenter for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and a member of the conferenceorganizing committee. “But in terms of global biodiversity at this point, I think itentirely justified. For Indonesia, with its extraordinary wealth of plant and animallife, this crisis is acute.”

Sunderland said that biodiversity loss is a time bomb that has the potential toseverely damage the global systems that sustain life on earth.

“We are all an integral part of nature; our fates tightly linked with biodiversity.Yet this rich resource is being lost at a greatly accelerated rate because of humanactivities. This impoverishes us all and weakens the ability of the living systems,on which we depend, to resist growing threats such as climate change,” he said.

LONDON, 19 July— Ba-bies born at night or at theweekend are at a greaterrisk of dying than thoseborn within normal work-ing hours, a study sug-gests. The analysis ofmore than one millionbirths in Scotland overtwo decades found therisk of death for babiesborn out of hours, while

Night staffing and ac-cess to facilities were pos-sible explanations, Glas-gow and Cambridge uni-versities suggested. Mostbabies died from lack ofoxygen. Those born be-tween 0900 and 1700 onMonday to Friday wereclassified as being withinnormal working hours, allothers as out-of-hours, theBritish Medical Journalreported. In all, there were539 deaths.

The team adjusted fora wide range of factorsand excluded babies bornvia planned caesarean, who are usually deliveredduring the day. Business as usual’ crop development won’tsatisfy future demand, research finds

SCIENCE DAILY, 19July—Although globalgrain production mustdouble by 2050 to addressrising population anddemand, new data from theUniversity of Illinoissuggests crop yields willsuffer unless newapproaches to adapt crop

plants to climate change areadopted. Improvedagronomic traits responsiblefor the remarkable increasesin yield accomplishedduring the past 50 years havereached their ceiling forsome of the world’s mostimportant crops.

“Global change is

happening so quickly thatits impact on agriculture istaking the world bysurprise,” said Don Ort, Uof I professor of cropsciences and USDA/ARSscientist. “Until recently, wehaven’t understood theurgency of addressingglobal change in

agriculture.”The need for new

technologies to conductglobal change research oncrops in an open-fieldenvironment is holding thecommercial sector backfrom studying issues suchas maximizing the elevatedcarbon dioxide advantageor studying the effects ofozone pollution on crops.

From an agriculturalstandpoint, one of the fewpositive aspects of globalchange has been the notionthat elevated carbondioxide in the atmospherewill stimulatephotosynthesis and resultin increased crop yields.

But recent studiesshow that crops grown inopen fields under elevatedcarbon dioxide levelsresulted in only half theyield increase expected andhalf of what the UnitedNation’s Intergovern-mental Panel on ClimateChange used in their modelpredictions regarding theworld’s food supply in2050.

dioxide experiment is being conducted in both corn and soybean at theUrbana SoyFACE facility.—INTERNET
