Began in the late 18th century
First defined as an aesthetic in literary criticism.
It concerned with the individual connection more than the societal connection.
In literature it was applied to a movement (not implying an actual school but rather a spirit, a state of mind).
Origin of Romanticism
Praised imagination over reason,
Emotions over logic, and
Intuition over science-making for a vast body of literature of great sensibility and passion.
It encouraged individualism and the free expression of personal feelings and turned to emotion and imagination as sources of inspiration.
Way of Thinking
Romantics were interested in the Medieval
past, the supernatural, the mystical, the “gothic,” and the exotic.
Romantics were attracted to rebellion and revolution, especially concerned with human rights, individualism, freedom from oppression.
Literature
Literature
Focused on its love of nature.
Held respect for primitivism.
Moved away from static universal types of classic characters to complex, distinctive characters.

English Literature
The English romantic period was dominated above all by poetry.
Poetic diction was replaced by language spoken by ordinary people.
The romantic poet tended to withdraw into himself indulging in introspection and meditation.
