Began in the late 18th century

First defined as an aesthetic in literary criticism.

It concerned with the individual connection more than the societal connection.

In literature it was applied to a movement (not implying an actual school but rather a spirit, a state of mind).

Praised imagination over reason,

Emotions over logic, and

Intuition over science-making for a vast body of literature of great sensibility and passion.

It encouraged individualism and the free expression of personal feelings and turned to emotion and imagination as sources of inspiration.

English Literature

The English romantic period was dominated above all by poetry.

Poetic diction was replaced by language spoken by ordinary people.
