Etisalat Helping Build Communities

Celebrating diversity and helping shape the future

Etisalat is a global company that takes to heart the cultures, traditions and ways of life in all the markets in which we operate. Our connection with our customers across the world runs deeper than mere business associations. We are committed to helping shape and build communities, and improving livelihoods and aspirations for the future. We believe that our success can only follow the success of the people and economies we actively support.

While our services and technologies keep customers connected, we also have initiatives that keep people safe and healthy and open doors for learning and exploring new opportunities. We help people develop their businesses, enhance relationships, build new friendships, come up with fresh ideas and keep abreast of rapid changes.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme is centred on education, environment and health, including special needs. Through our many initiatives we share the hopes and dreams of the communities where we work, as well as help overcome problems and adversities that hinder or prevent progress, wellbeing and happiness.

We hope you enjoy this booklet which showcases some of our most recent projects. The momentum behind our CSR programme will continue to build in line with the societal needs of our changing world.

“Operating companies not only enable reach through telecommunications deployment and development, but also through a firm and active belief in corporate social responsibility. Whether reaching many or a select few, social responsibility enables, touches, and changes the equations of many lives.”

Ahmad Abdulkarim JulfarGroup Chief Executive Officer

“We are very proud of Etisalat employees who volunteer their time and efforts to shape the future of lives around the globe. Their contributions have saved patients with cancer-related illnesses, malaria, and kidney failure. Their efforts have made a considerable impact on the environment, and on those who had no access to education or safe water. These employees are a source of pride for our organisation.”

Etisalat is considered one of the industry’s pacesetters by providing the latest technologies first, thus powering the UAE into the Top 10 Nations List.

A pioneer in next-generation networks, we are now deploying a nationwide fibre optic system across the UAE. We operate the Middle East’s largest LTE network and have just launched 4G mobile services in the UAE and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

‘Green’ technologies are an increasing focus for us and we are delivering numerous initiatives such as smart building technologies, the latest Machine-to-Machine (M2M) solutions and alternative power. Our infrastructure meets the highest international standards – one of our targets is to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption of our fibre optic network by over 80% and 70% respectively.

Education: Advancing Society Thoughts

EducationThe door to the future

We believe that education is a basic right for all and is the key to advancing both thought and society. It is instrumental to achieving socio-economic development. By encouraging education through various initiatives, we are laying the foundation for a better tomorrow. In 2011, the Etisalat Group witnessed major achievements through our educational initiatives.

Etisalat UAE:

Supporting and inspiring the country’s future ICT leaders has been a long-term commitment for Etisalat UAE, with numerous large-scale programmes and partnerships dedicated to youth.

A key partnership with the UAE Ministry of Education, called Ayaadi, was announced in October 2011. Essentially the programme provides technology such as internet access and broadband to schools and learning centres. This follows the ongoing success of Etisalat’s BT Innovation Centre at Khalifa University which inspires the UAE’s students by promoting world-class research, technology transfers, research training and open innovation. By providing the technology infrastructure for the centre, Etisalat ensures the continuation of industry collaboration with various UK and UAE based government organisations, and research-active academic institutions and on new generations and education.

Etisalat launched an e-Bookstore and e-Library as a trial project with Huawei Technologies Co. at the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (Kustar). Students and faculty members were able to experience and enjoy hundreds of titles in both print and audio, free of charge. They could access lecture and laboratory notes and other e-resources from smart devices such as PCs and mobile phones.

Deals were signed with the heads of various educational institutions across the UAE to ensure technology related studies are sustained with adequate literature on the subject. Providing infrastructure to schools is also a key focus. A cooperation pact with the UAE’s Ministry of Education sees Etisalat provide government schools with IP/MPLS internet connectivity and technical support services. By working with UAE’s National Research and Education Network (NREN) - also known as Ankobut - Etisalat provides dedicated internet access to higher education institutions, connecting students to international research networks.

The company continues to increase and improve mobile learning tools by conducting workshops with leading establishments and by partnering with innovative e-education companies.

Etisalat Nigeria:

Etisalat Nigeria adopted three new ‘Schools for Life’ in the state of Lagos - Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School, Osborne Road Ikoyi and Edward Blyden Primary School. This came after their earlier adoption of Okesuna Lagos Island School and Rabiatu Thompson Primary School Surulere. The programme directly helps students and teachers by refurbishing

Excelcomindo (Indonesia)

XL has made great progress with its two integrated programmes, Komputer Untuk Sekolah (KUS) Computers for Village Schools and Internet Sehat (Healthy Internet). The five-year KUS programme donates computers to local schools, trains teachers on computer use and provides free internet access. A special guide on how to use the internet wisely has also been produced. Since launching three years ago, KUS has reached over 30,000 students across 187 schools in Indonesia.

Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited:

PTCL has partnered with the Government of Punjab to improve the quality of education in rural areas. Its state-of-the-art Wireless Bridge Technology provides internet across six schools in three cities. Etisalat provides numerous educational opportunities for Sri Lankan children. The company sets up Knowledge Centres in some of the most deprived and deserving schools in Awissawella, Padukka, Mahagoda Ahangama (Galle) and Hopton. The centres make reading materials readily available for the students to assist their learning and academic growth.

Atlantique Telecom:

Etisalat’s West African operations (AT) have also adopted several schools to improve education standards for students and provide needed infrastructure. Knowledge Centres have been built to provide students with easy access to educational materials and to foster opportunities for research and development.

Thuraya:

Thuraya has partnered with UNICEF to advocate and raise awareness about child education rights. Numerous successful campaigns have been activated as a result. For example, on the 22nd anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, Thuraya sent an SMS message to all of its consumers to reinforce its commitment to unprivileged children across the globe.

ENVIRONMENTSustainable environment for generations to come

Like many organisations, Etisalat is working to streamline internal processes in order to reduce carbon footprint. We also have numerous other CSR projects aimed at protecting the environment and improving conditions where people live.

Etisalat UAE:

One of the most notable projects of 2011 is a joint initiative between Etisalat and Pacific Controls - the Emirates Energy Star Project - which will significantly reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint. The UAE has a significant carbon footprint due to unabated energy consumption that is currently creating immense ecological, social and environmental pressure. The project harnesses Etisalat’s ICT-enabled M2M (Machine-to-Machine ) technology to reduce energy consumptions in organisations and improve energy efficiency in buildings. The aim is to reduce the country’s carbon

footprint by at least 20% by 2015. The Emirates Energy Star project is held under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Water and Environment and its first phase has already seen a large number of government entities participate.

Etisalat UAE has been working on recycling campaign in the UAE since 2007 and has since collected 450 tons of electronic waste. In 2011 itself it recycled more than 136,650 papers and cardboards which have all been safely disposed of in specialist factories.

This programme is widely regarded as a success and has been cited in numerous environmental and CSR conferences.

Several eco-projects were launched in 2011 including tree planting around Etisalat offices and stores. The eBilling initiative was accelerated during 2011 to enable customers to opt for paperless billing. Etisalat currently saves more than 16 tonnes of paper each year whilst also achieving some cost savings.

22

Page 14: Etisalat CSR Report-2012

Etisalat Sri Lanka:

The largest CSR initiative undertaken by Etisalat Sri Lanka in 2011 was the Sonduru-Diriya project to recycle marketing waste. The self-employment project has been set up in rural villages, empowering local women to use recycled materials to produce environment-friendly grocery bags. Run by small groups of women, the project has not only created gainful employment for many, but also created new growth opportunities.

Etisalat also helped establish disaster management centres in the flood affected districts of Anuradhapura, Pollonnaruwa, Badulla and Akkaraipaththu.

HEALTHEquipping and empowering people

Under the initiative of ‘Protecting the Nation’ the Etisalat Group hopes to address various issues that affect the health and well-being of both individuals and communities in the countries in which we operate.

Etisalat UAE:

In February 2011, Etisalat and Ericsson signed an agreement to deploy the Remote Patient Monitoring System for UAE doctors to monitor the health of patients remotely via the internet. By using medical sensors and communication devices, doctors and nurses can measure electrocardiography (ECG), spirometry, blood pressure, pulse rate and oxygen saturation.

Etisalat Nigeria:

Etisalat Nigeria has partnered with Malaria Foundation International (MFI) to educate people on malaria prevention and control. The programme runs an entertaining radio drama series and engages student clubs to distribute insecticide treated mosquito nets.

Etisalat Misr:

Providing clean water in Egypt has been a major focus for Etisalat through its Origin programme. The nation-wide programme is run in association with Care and several other international organisations and development agencies. In its first year, Origin aided tens of thousands of people across seven jurisdictions. The initiative has four main components:

• Bringing safe drinking water to the homes of deprived villages

• Supplying villages, rural areas and squatter settlements suffering from polluted or contaminated water with purification plants and systems

• Providing water saving irrigation solutions to farmers

• Providing public hospitals with kidney dialysis machines and stations to help ease the suffering of poor patients

Etisalat Canar:

Since its establishment - and even before it began delivering telecom services in the country - Canar clearly communicated its plans to play a key role in socially supporting the people of Sudan. The company launched the three-year $300K USD health initiative, Canar Roll Back Malaria Project in 2006 in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health.

Zantel:

Zantel made life very special for one little Tanzanian girl who suffered from a serious heart condition and required immediate surgery in the UK. With Zantel’s help the operation was conducted successfully and the girl is well on her way to recovery.

More recently, Zantel launched mHealth Technology to prevent malnutrition in children and ensure safe childbirth for women in Tanzania.

Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited:

PTCL’s Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) routinely visit the country’s rural areas where there are no proper medical facilities. The units visit remote areas three times a week to provide general out-patient facilities and medical assistance. Areas covered by the MMUs include Murree, Kalar Saeedan, Rawat, Deena, Taxila, Gujar Khan, Fateh Jang, Okara, Kasur, Narowal, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhopura, Mandi Bahauddin and their outlying areas.

Ufone:

Ufone undertook a complete revamp of the Children’s Ward and Children’s Out Patient Department of the Federal Government Services Hospital in 2011. Partnering with Plan Pakistan, Ufone is also engaged in building a Thalassemia centre for patients in rural Punjab, and providing a free dialysis unit at The Kidney Centre in Karachi.

SPECIAL NEEDS Integration into society

The Etisalat Group continues to address and empower people with special needs across all levels of society.

Etisalat UAE and Etisalat Misr:

Both companies continue to develop technologies and invest in specialised mobile applications to support those with physical disabilities. Two Technologies allows visually impaired customers stay connected with friends, family and colleagues, irrespective of their physical location. It also allows the hearing impaired to use video calls at reduced prices. This innovation has enabled hundreds of thousands of people to use their mobile phones with sign language.

Etihad Etisalat Mobily:

Mobily supports various activities and programmes of the Prince Salman Centre for Disability. They actively support a variety of training, therapy and rehabilitation programmes. Through its support of the centre, Mobily stays up to date with current scientific research to help integrate disabled people into the community.

Our Other Programmes:We have responded to natural disasters

Page 20: Etisalat CSR Report-2012

Our other programmesWhile the Etisalat Group of companies supports the causes of education, environment, health and special needs, there are many other charitable works undertaken every year. These are mainly when communities face their most difficult times during natural disasters such as drought, famine and floods. Here are just some of the examples where we have responded to such events.

Thuraya:

When natural disasters or calamities occur in the countries where Etisalat operates, Thuraya has always been quick to respond to emergency situations. Besides signing up with the UAE-based National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority, Thuraya has deployed telephones and lent support to search and rescue operations during the flooding in Uganda and Pakistan, and the earthquakes in China and Indonesia.

The company’s strong relationship with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) continues to flourish. Thuraya regularly contributes voice and data solutions for emergency services in the wake of natural disasters. A prime example of this was the deployment of Thuraya phones and broadband solutions during the Japanese earthquake and tsunami of early 2011. Thuraya solutions were also used for disaster management communications following the floods in Thailand that devastated the country later during the year.

In addition, Thuraya provided satellite handhelds to the Ugandan government for the establishment of a disaster warning system across the African nation.

Another significant CSR project was Thuraya’s partnership with the pro-woman channel, Al Aan TV, for shedding light on the famine in Somalia. By donating the satellite broadband solution Thuraya IP, Al Aan TV was able to stream live stories from the crisis zone in the hope of raising both awareness and funds to provide relief to the Somali people.

Excelcomindo (Indonesia)

Apart from ongoing efforts to ensure environment protection and long term sustainability, XL has built a reputation for prompt action in responding to natural disasters and alleviating the loss and suffering of affected communities.

During the volcanic disaster in Yogyakarta they helped with emergency logistics and planning, and provided needed telecommunication facilities. Support continued after the disaster with the Merapi Greening Programme and renovation and assistance at affected schools.

Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited and Ufone:

In August 2011, when devastating floods inundated the Sindh province and affected millions of people, both PTCL and Ufone were at the forefront of emergency support and relief assistance. The companies jointly arranged the dispatch of medical supplies and food in Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Tharparker, Sanghar, Nawabshah and Larkana. PTCL set up medical camps in Latifabad, Kotri, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah and Larkana. Employees of both companies made personal contributions to the Prime Minister’s Fund for Flood Victims by generously donating part of their salaries.

XL also set up two disaster relief programmes with basic necessities such as food and sanitation kits as well as vital communication kits with starter packs and chargers. Recently they have set up an SMS donation programme and participated in rebuilding and renovating schools in affected areas.

Etisalat Misr:

Etisalat Misr provided food and blankets to thousands of people in Aswan, North, and South Sinai jurisdictions who were devastated by flooding.

38

Page 22: Etisalat CSR Report-2012

Etisalat Afghanistan:

The Afghanistan team remains committed to promoting Islamic traditions and upholding the cultural values of Afghani society. One of their key programmes is the reconstruction and renovation of mosques throughout the country. The renovated mosques provide comfortable praying facilities for local communities and facilitate the noble teachings of Islam. Etisalat has already completed eight mosques in the Kabul province and has 30 others planned.

Other CSR programmes include food aid for more than 10,000 poor and low-income families, school materials for a further 3000 underprivileged students, and Iftar Saem activities during the holy month of Ramadan.
