Board of Education Meeting News October 20, 2010 Special Presentation The Board congratulated the 15 Community and School Alliance (CaSA) grant recipients for the 2010-2011 school year. The CaSA board awarded more than $13,000 to District educators who submitted win- ning grant applications. The grants will be used to carry out innovative classroom projects. Outstanding Students The Board recognized nine students for their outstanding aca- demic achievement. From Anton Elementary School, Debra Fields, principal, were Alexandria Amsbry, Esmeralda Gonzalez, and Teresa Herrera. Their teachers are Lisa Lenaburg, Karma Duffy, Christine Phillippi, and Susan Goldsmith. From Cole Elementary School, Diane Silva, principal, were Elijah Amsterdam, Niah Handy, and Johnny Tran. Their teachers are Gayle Henry and Carla Vargas. From Cypress Elementary School, David Delgado, principal, were Nohely Cueva, Briana Guerrero, and Diana Urda. Their teachers are Kellie Whittaker, Lori Simanek, Gaelen George, and Jacquline Irons. School Showcase Del Vallejo Middle School’s Cadet Corps, under the direction of Lt. Ben Cervantes, presented the colors, carried out a drill and cer- emony exhibition, and made a presentation on their program. Charles McWilliams is Del Vallejo’s principal. Administrative Presentations Mohammad Z. Islam, chief business and financial officer, pre- sented an update on the Governor’s final state budget for 2010-2011. The District’s revised deficit for 2010-11 is $18.2 million. The Board also heard a presentation on the financing options for facilities projects. In Other Board Action The Board heard the second reading of Board Policy 6012.5., Targeted Instructional Improvement Plan – Hispanic English Only Students. In Memoriam The Board expressed its sympathy to the families of deceased for- mer employees Linda Groves, Leon Truss, and Genevieve Wheeler. Cadet Grant Congratulations to the Pacific High School Cadet Corps on be- ing awarded a $1,000 grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. The grant will help sup- port the cadets as they complete community service projects. Pacific High School has the most cadets of any District school, with more than 270 enrolled cadets. Major Phillip Ayala is the Commandant of Cadets and Tex Acosta is the principal. Textbook Examples Kudos to Arroyo Valley High School teacher Keith Brockie on having his students’ artwork fea- tured in a ceramics textbook. The ceramics artwork of 14 Arroyo Valley High School students was selected to be featured in the text book “Experience Clay” by author Maureen Mackey. In addition to the images of student work, the book also has a full-page career profile of AVHS graduate Anna Delgado, who is now study- ing ceramics at Cal State, San Bernardino. Book FairParkside Elementary School is

holding a Book Fair at the Redlands Barnes & Noble on Friday, October 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be arts and crafts, face painting, class perfor-mances, and chances to win prizes. Just mention Parkside School when making a purchase and the school will earn a portion of the proceeds.

Favorite TeachersStudents can nominate k-12

teachers for the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher contest by writing an essay, poem, or thank you let-ter that shares how the teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire their teacher. Students who want to participate should submit their entry to Laurie Aldern, community relations manager, at the Redlands Barnes & Noble, 27469 Lugonia Avenue in the Citrus Plaza by March 18.

Clorox GrantKimbark Elementary School has

applied for a $20,000 Clorox “Power a Bright Future” grant to support its sixth-grade trip to Catalina Island. You can help them win this grant by voting for their entry entitled “Kimbark Catalina Ecosystem Field Trip” daily now through November 1.
