Grand Knight

With school back in session, things are starting to get busy! There is always somewhere to be and something to do. In

These busy times, it is important that we do not neglect the spiritual aspects of our lives. As Marion Woodman stated, "If we fail to nourish our souls, they wither, and without soul, life ceases to have meaning." The best way to nourish our souls is through the source and summit of our faith: the Eucharist. Another way to nourish our souls could be as simple as finding some quiet time during the day to pray or just sit and be with God in meditation. The Knights offer many opportunities to nourish your souls: First Friday Eucharistic Adoration, praying the rosary before the business meeting, and volunteer events for the less fortunate and mentally challenged. The Knights are not just about working and socializing. One thing that sets the Knights apart is that we are Catholic. We all must ask ourselves about our spiritual lives: Would people know I am Catholic by my actions? I know I need to improve in this area and the best way for me to do so is to be around like-minded Catholic men in the Knights of Columbus.

Vivat Jesus!

Knight Family Committee

The first family event was a bowling outing at Cordova bowling lanes. The event was held on August 19, 2012. There were several knights and their families as well as a few prospective members in attendance. It was a great afternoon

of fun and fellowship. Some members even showed off their great bowling skills while others tried to just make it through the games.

I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the Knights this year in coordinating family events. I look forward to meeting each of you as you join us for fun and fellowship throughout the year.

Thanks,

Lance Burgess

Deputy Grand Knight

“Are you proud to be a Knight?” “Huh, what? Yeah, I guess so, why?”Well, I don’t see your name tag.

Plus I hadn’t seen you at any meeting in a while. ““Oh, uh, I lost the name tag. It’s been crazy at my house; we’re usually at Boy Scout meetings on Tuesday nights.”“The meetings are on the first Thursday night of the month.” “Oh.”“Hey, how’s that new tv you bought?”“You heard? It’s sweet – 52 inches HD, DVR, all the bells and whistles you can imagine!” “You got a favorite show?”“The wife and I love those lawyer shows, we don’t miss a one, we record them all and watch ‘em every chance we get! Why?” “I’m confused. You’re proud to be a Knight, but you don’t wear your name tag to Church. You put your favorite football team flag outside on game day, don’t you?” “Yep!”“You watch – what, ten to fifteen hours of television a week – and you can’t give us ONE hour a week?!” “To do what?”“Adoration is on the first Friday of every month. One hour, max. Attend a business meeting. A little over an hour. Attend the social. Make a new friend; find a new employee your boss is looking for. Help to clean the church on Saturdays. That’s another hour. Give me a couple of hours to assist in cleaning Trinity Hall on Sundays. You’re already there for Mass. And I won’t tell your wife that you are mopping floors!”“That’s an awful lot of hours you’re asking for! Did I tell you about the Boy Scout meetings on Tuesdays?”“You did, and we can help with that if you’d like. I know three or four Knights who used to be involved with the Scouts. They might be interested in helping out. Give them a call.”“But I pay my dues annually. Isn’t that enough?”“Nope, ‘fraid not. There’s an awful lot that needs to be done, both in the Church and in Bartlett. We need more hands on deck, know what I mean?”“Let me think about it, I know my wife would appreciate me out of the house a couple times amonth! I’ll let you know the next Tuesday if I can make it.”“You mean Thursday.”

Vivat Jesus!

Card Night

Thursday, August 16th 2012 the Council Committee held the annual Card Night. Wendell Strickland was on hand to serve up Nathan's hot dogs and chips. Chris Etzel brought in a dart

board and Greg Thomas' brother Mike Sawyer brought his table tennis skills. Between the line of 15 guys playing darts, Pat Casey and Mike Sawyer in an epic battle for table tennis superiority, and 5 guys running the house in Black Jack, it turned out to be a great evening of fun and fellowship. At the end Ron Rye made a quick call to Stevie B's to sent us forth with bellies topped off on Loaded Baked Potato pizza!

Pro Life Committee News

On July 9, 2008, CFRB talk show host, Spider Jones, interviewed former abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson about his past involvement in the abortion movement and his conversion to the pro-life viewpoint.

At one time Nathanson was deeply entrenched in the American pro-abortion movement, having co-founded the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) and overseen 75,000 abortions as director of an abortion clinic. During the CFRB program Nathanson recalled the deceitful and dishonest tactics that he and NARAL relied upon to push for the legalization and acceptance of abortion.

"We claimed that between five and ten thousand women a year died of botched abortions," he said. "The actual figure was closer to 200 to 300 and we also claimed that there were a million illegal abortions a year in the United States and the actual figure was close to 200,000. So, we were guilty of massive deception."

"I mean as a founding member and chairman of the medical committee, I accepted the figures which came from a biostatistician named Christopher Teetsy and he and his wife passed along these figures to us at NARAL. We were in no position to validate them or not, so we accepted them in the interests of higher standards, or at least higher objectives," he explained.

Nathanson's conversion to the pro-life movement was sparked by the advent of the ultrasound machine in the early 1970s. He related how his heart was moved to realize that a fetus is in fact a human being after watching an unborn baby recoil from a vacuum abortion device before being sucked from its mother's womb.

Nathanson titled the video of this incident "The Silent Scream" and began using it to spread the pro-life message. Planned Parenthood, however, took a page out of NARAL's book when the abortion giant spread rumors that the video was a fake. Nathanson confirmed that these rumors, like the tactics of NARAL, were lies.

"Planned Parenthood was responsible for that," he said. "But it was not faked and what we did in order to validate it was to go to Dr. Ian Donald in Scotland, who is the father of ultra-sound, the inventor of ultra-sound and he looked at the film and he swore an affidavit that everything was as it was shown and there was no doctoring or manipulation or any changes in the speed or anything else."

Nathanson then addressed the fact that abortion is now used as a form of birth control - a result of another pro-abortion fabrication. "One of the myths that was fed to the public through the media was that legalizing abortion would only mean that abortions taking place illegally, would be done legally. But in fact, abortion is now being used primary as a method of birth control all over the world and in the USA too."

Pro-abortion advocates "refuse to see what most people are now conceding, that the fetus is a human being and we have no business massacring it in large numbers," concluded Dr. Nathanson.URL: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/jul/08072904.html

Colombian SquiresSt. Joachim Circle 5086

Since being founded in 2005, the squires have participated in many community, council, and circle activities, from Special Athletes Day, the Public Square Rosary, assisting the Knights during the Lenten Fish Fry's, and presenting the colors at the Bartlett Police & Fireman Recognition breakfast. But the top community service project the St. Ann squires participate every year is the Fayette Cares Turkey Drive. On the 3 weekends that proceed the food distribution, the squires collect frozen turkeys before and after all of the weekend Masses. On the the day of the distribuition, the squires help package and distribute food boxes to needy families. This usually takes about 6 hours. For this activity, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus has awarded the St. Ann squires the Brother Barnabas Award, which recognizes on of the 25 most outstanding programs conducted by a local squires' circle throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Thanks,

Gary Tircuit

At the 11:30 Mass on 8/12, Father Dexter presented the Squires with their 3rd consecutive Corps d'Elite Award as well as the Brother Barnabas Award for conducting one of the top 25 projects in the entire organization (turkey drive for Fayette Cares)!

During 2011, the Order issued more life insurance than ever before in our history: $7.9 billion. Our total insurance in force reached a new high of $83.5 billion. To put this remarkable number in perspective, consider that at the end of 2000, we stood at $40.4 billion.
