Message from Bishop Coyne
It is with an abundance of joy and gratitude that I
announce the first phase of the reopening of our churches
to celebrate daily and Sunday Mass beginning June 1. The
obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains lifted until
further notice, especially if you are part of a vulnerable
population and/or have an underlying health condition.
Please approach the celebration of Mass with charity and
love for our clergy and faith
community by following the protocols:
• Stay home if you are sick or not feeling well.
• Wear a mask in Mass.
Sanitize your hands upon entry. Due to shortages
of sanitizer, please bring your own if possible.
Sit in designated pews and respect social distance
between others of 6 feet or more unless you are
one family unit.
• Refrain from congregating in tight areas or
entering cordoned off areas.
• Follow the protocols to receive Holy Communion
in hand at Mass.
• Follow your church protocols regarding
registration if necessary due to the 25% capacity
limit.
For more details about church protocols visit:
vermontcatholic.org/covid-19.
While these protocols are intrusive, they are
necessary as they allow us to celebrate the Sacraments in
person while doing our part to help stop the spread of
coronavirus.
Looking forward to seeing some of you “live” at Mass
again, I remain,
Sincerely yours in Christ, – Bishop Christopher Coyne

Pope adds three new invocations to the Litany of the Blessed
Virgin Mary
“Mater misericordiae”, the Latin for “Mother of mercy”;
"Mater spei", or “Mother of hope”; and “Solacium
migrantium", or “Solace of migrants” are the new
invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Litany of
Loreto, which is often recited at the end of the Rosary.
The addition that Pope Francis has made to the Litany of
Loreto, was made public by the Congregation for Divine
Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, on
Saturday. It was timed for the feast of the Immaculate Heart
of Mary, June 20. In a letter to the presidents of bishops’
conferences worldwide, Cardinal Robert Sarah, the Prefect
of the Congregation, and its Secretary, Archbishop Arthur
Roche, note that through the course of centuries, Christians
have been using innumerable invocations and titles to call
upon the Virgin Mary, “as the privileged and sure way to an
encounter with Christ”.

First Holy Communion in our Parish
Our parish is planning on the First Holy Communion at
the end of August 2020, this year.
Capital Campaign
As you may be aware, the Diocese of Burlington is in the
planning stages of a major capital campaign to unite as
Catholics to renew, strengthen and secure the future of the
Catholic Church in Vermont. What is genuinely exciting for
St Andre Bessette Parish is that 60% of the dollars we raise is
ours to keep!
A successful Christ Our Hope campaign effort at St
Andre Bessette Parish will require a strong volunteer team
willing to reach out to their brothers and sisters in Christ. Fr.
Paul can’t possibly visit with everyone so he needs our help
– you will assist with making follow-up calls to fellow
parishioners to answer their questions and encourage
support. If you would like to assist, please call the office.
You can help make a difference for the Catholic Church in
Vermont and St Andre Bessette Parish. Please consider
lending your talent to this important cause!

My brothers and sisters in Christ,I have been giving much thought to a pastoral response
to the present violence and upheaval in our country sparked by the recent death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have read many statements and heard many opinions on how best to respond as a man of faith speaking to people of faith and goodwill here in Vermont concerning his death, the continuing scourge of racism and the recent protests and social unrest in our country. Just two days ago, Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement on these matters which encapsulates my own feelings and thoughts well:
The killing of George Floyd was senseless and brutal, a sin that cries out to heaven for justice. How is it possible that in America, a black man’s life can be taken from him while calls for help are not answered, and his killing is recorded as it happens?
I am praying for George Floyd and his loved ones, and on behalf of my brother bishops, I share the outrage of the black community and those who stand with them in Minneapolis, Los Angeles and across the country. The cruelty and violence he suffered does not reflect on the majority of good men and women in law enforcement who carry out their duties with honor. We know that. And we trust that civil authorities will investigate his killing carefully and make sure those responsible are held accountable.
We should all understand that the protests we are seeing in our cities reflect the justified frustration and anger of millions of our brothers and sisters who even today experience humiliation, indignity and unequal opportunity only because of their race or the color of their skin. It should not be this
way in America. Racism has been tolerated for far too long in our way of life.
It is true what Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said, that riots are the language of the unheard. We should be doing a lot of listening right now. This time, we should not fail to hear what people are saying through their pain. We need to finally root out the racial injustice that still infects too many areas of American society.
But the violence of recent nights is self-destructive and self-defeating. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost. Let us keep our eyes on the prize of true and lasting change.
Legitimate protests should not be exploited by persons who have different values and agendas. Burning and looting communities, ruining the livelihoods of our neighbors, does not advance the cause of racial equality and human dignity.
We should not let it be said that George Floyd died for no reason. We should honor the sacrifice of his life by removing racism and hate from our hearts and renewing our commit-ment to fulfill our nation’s sacred promise — to be a beloved community of life, liberty and equality for all.
Please join with me in prayer and peaceful action to renew our commitment and fulfill our nation’s sacred promise — “to be a beloved community of life, liberty and equality for all.”
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
The Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne Bishop of Burlington
