Opportunities for a private rail freight operater in the German market
Captrain Deutschland GmbH – 11.03.2016
In general: • Size of the market. • Disaggregation of value chain. • High share of international traffic. • In principle, long term growth of demand for transport. In particular: • Flexibility, customer focus, customized logistics, strong link between production
and commercials. • Better utilisation of ressources. • Liberalisation of rail traction current. • Lower overhead.

Challenges for a competitor in the German rail freight market
Captrain Deutschland GmbH – 11.03.2016
In general: • Deterioration of the competitiveness of rail compared to road:
- Decreasing petrol prices, decreasing road access charges. - Increasing overall traction electricity cost, increasing track access charges. - Increase in cost due to ETCS equipment, silent brakes (business model?). - Lack of last mile infrastructure for rail, closure of secondary lines. - Administrative burden on rail freight compared to road.
• Lack of coordination of infrastructure possessions, in particular along rail freight corridors.
• Cost of border crossing - Additional language requirements (B1 even for short crossings) - Cost of locomotive equipment (several signaling systems, several traction currents)
• Ageing / lack of qualified staff in the market, in particular drivers.
In particular: • Lack of economies of scale, lack of depreciated assets.
