3rd EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPNIŠ 2005

The 3rd European University Football Championship took place from July 11 to 17, 2005 in the City of Nis, the sec-ond largest city in Serbia and Montenegro and one of the oldest cities in the Balkans.

Eight European university teams, who came to Nis, were warmly welcomed by the hosts; the University Sports As-sociation of Serbia and Montenegro and the University Sports Association of Nis. The arrival point for the Champi-onship was Belgrade, from where the Organising Commit-tee provided free bus transportation to the Student hostel in Nis, where the participants were accommodated.

The opening ceremony took place on the Stadium Cair; just before the first match played by the University of Nis (SCG) against the University of Camerino (ITA). The EUSA EC representative Mr. Michel Bonfils welcomed the teams; while the Rector of the University of Nis prof. dr. Gradimir Milovanovic officially opened the championship.

The matches were played on four different stadiums in Nis. The Executive Committee chaired by Mr. Nebojsa Jo-vanovic, President of the University Sports Association of

Nis, did a wonderful job. For all the matches, the first divi-sion referees had been provided, what was appreciated by the teams and especially the EUSA Technical Delegate Mr. Alun Evans.

There were over 40 students and other young people in-volved in the organisation of the event. Every team had its own attaché, some even two; who spent all the time with the players and provided them with all necessary informa-tion. The students from Nis also organised very good so-cial programme for their European colleagues. Inside the University, an open bar with live music was operating; and every night one new band was playing.

The receptions were organised by the Mayor of the City of Nis, Mr. Smiljko Kostic and the Rector of the University of Nis, prof. dr. Gradimir Milovanovic for the officials and the EUSA representatives. The EUSA President Mr. Enno Harms also visited the Championship and thanked the Or-ganising Committee for their work and superb organisation.

Results

The media coverage of the event was impressive. There were five regional television stations present; four newslet-ters regularly reported from the championship; the daily bulletin was produced and delivered to the players every morning and the media team did really a great job. The results were also published on the official website of the event; which was regularly updated with all the relevant information.

The matches were played on a very good level, and the fi-nals were especially interesting. The University of Caen de-feated the Aigaleo Athens Technological Institute with 3:1; after extra time had to be played (1:1 in the regular time).
