Heading in to day 3 it was 4 from 4 for UTS with some great wins against Melbourne Uni and Sydney Uni on Tuesday. The team established their intention in the competition with all players are contributing with bat or ball. Manly player Andrew Lowe, Randwick player Nick Charlwood, the two Northern District Boys Dave Lowery and Dan Donaldson and the two Sydney boys Harry Dalton and Chris Hulston have been the pick of the bunch!

Unfortunately the boys lost the momentum of the first two days, with many of the team battling injuries, and were defeated by Melbourne in the Semi Final on Day 3. They played off for bronze against Sydney Uni on the last day of play, again going down to take out 4th place overall.

BALMAIN WATERPOLOSeason starts with success...5 rounds into the NSW Water Polo Summer season and Balmain Water Polo has been hit with mixed results, the ladies fairing far better than the men. With plenty of winnable matches coming up hopes are high for our water polo players.

UNIVERSITY TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPSThe UTS Triathlon Team looked doomed for disaster...but then.....A bus full of UTS triathletes, or for some soon to become triathletes, had a slow start. Sydney traffic had the bus running very late from when they set off for Kingscliff and by the time they reached their overnight pit-stop the pre booked accommodation had closed up, not to be awoken by the night phone....so much for “late night check in”.

With star athlete Keiren Roche’s bike falling apart at 10pm the night before the race, and one UTS team member showing up to compete in speedos and substituting the usual energy gels taped to the bike for a banana the team had a shaky start.

But despite all this and the 12hrs in a mini bus the day before, the team pulled together and all performed magnificently on the day. Kieran Roche placed 3rd overall and 2nd in the University Games Championships, and not to be left in the shadows Mike Woods won his age category and placed 7th in the Uni Championships. The final members Alex Godbold (14th), Tom Penistone (20th), and Will McGlone (22nd) rounded out the male team, and results have not been released as yet but the UTS Men’s team have come either first or second overall!

Congratulations also to Cecile Bester, the only female UTS athlete who placed 14th in her competition.

CRACKING STARTTheir first rampant round in six seasons! Four rounds into the Grade Cricket Season and Sydney Cricket Club have had an amazing start. They are currently sitting 4th in the Club Championships and 4th in First Grade. A career best was achieved by Jono Smith with figures of 6/23. The women have had a tougher time, but over the weekend had a victory over high flyers Gordon so hopefully that win will lead onto a few more wins for the girls.

ROWING INTO THE FUTUREOn Sunday 2nd December the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club and UTS Union hosted the first UTS Sports Clubs Bay Run Challenge.9 UTS Clubs were keen to take on the 7km course which was broken up into four legs of 1750m, making the race a 4 person mixed relay starting and finishing at the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club house.

UTS Bats AFL, UTS Norths Athletics, UTS Gridiron, UTS Kickboxing, DOUTS, UTS Fitness Centre Staff, UTS Rowing, UTS Swimming, Balance & UTS TriathlonThe start horn blasted and it seemed that most clubs tactically chose to start with male runner. The flaming red hair of Dylan Dudley from the athletics team seemed a speck in the distance as he sprinted his leg in under 4 minutes to establish an early lead for the hot favourites. However not far behind was Mike Woods from the Triathlon Club who put in an impressive run after a morning spent competing in the Kurnell sprint triathlon.

The Athletics Club were holding a lead of a couple of minutes over the Triathlon Club coming in to the second change with Rowing Club working their way into third. Beyond these teams it was still a tight race with the UTS Fitness Centre staff, Kickboxing and DOUTS all within 20 seconds of each other.

The finish saw the red hot Athletics team lead from start to finish with Triathlon coming in second and Rowing cementing third place. The Athletics team finished in just over 21 minutes. A fast time and great effort from all top 3 teams who took home awesome prizes including Beats by Dre headphones, PS3 consoles and UTS gym memberships.

Congratulations to all those who ran, it was a great day which brought the UTS community together to celebrate once more at the Haberfield Club which will very soon be demolished to make way for a brand new facility in 2013. Teams are already planning their training for the next race at the new club.

Quote of the Day came from a random male jogger who looked shocked to see Charlotte Wilson from UTS Norths blast past him and hastily asked staff, “There’s no way she can be running the whole way that fast, can she?”

WHY ARE THEY SO FAST ?UTS Norths Athletics that’s why....Two rounds into the NSW Athletics season and UTS North’s has started off where they finished off last year, absolutely dominating the start of the track season!

Currently leading the overall points tally in the Club Premiership as well as leading all categories, they are well placed to repeat last year’s efforts of Club Premiership glory.
