europhysics news BULLETIN OF THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY J A. Volume 13 Number 11 Meetings Issue November 1982 Change in Membership Fee When the Council of the European Physical Society met in Geneva at the beginning of April, it was facing an economic situation that it recognized would be difficult to contain without an increased influx of convertible funds. Accordingly, the Executive Committee was empowered to increase the unit fee on 1 January 1983 from the present figure of Sw.Frs. 9. —to Sw.Frs. 10. —should it consider this to be necessary. Previously the prin- ciple had been generally accepted that the unit fee should at least keep pace with the rate of inflation in Switzerland and it was also acknowledged that new initiatives had to be pro- perly covered financially, such as the publication of the European Journal of Physics. Since the meeting in April, there have been encouraging signs that the EPS can look forward to an existence that is rather less precarious than the one it has known in recent years —the number of Associate Members has grown considerably through the personal efforts of a small group of dedicated people and many ideas have been generated by the Finance Committee for improving our recruitment of Individual Members. Moreover, the introduction of 4d) Members (from the APS as Collaborating Society) has increased the potential membership significantly and the break-even point for the European Journal of Physics is in sight; a little more sustained effort should see the journal making a profit. Nevertheless, the cost of living in Switzerland has been steadily increasing over the past three years, staff salaries are below the regional norms and new efforts, whether these be in recruiting or in launching new projects demand investment. The Executive Committee has therefore decided that it would not be wise to delay increasing the unit fee. However, it will be recalled that Council also agreed that when the rise was introduced, the number of units payed by 4a) Members would be reduced from 14 to 12 and we might also remind retired Members that they are entitled to apply for a reduction in their annual fee of 50%. From 1 January 1983 then, the annual membership fee will be as follows: 4a) Members (no other declared affiliations): Sw.Frs. 120.— 4b) Members (groups such as national physical societies): in proportion to the number of their members 4c) Members (members of a member group): Sw.Frs. 40.— 4d) Members (members of a collaborating society): Sw.Frs. 50.— s$25.— General Conference With the publication of the Proceedings, a much bigger audience than could actually attend is now able to appreciate the high level and broad interest of the EPS 5th General Conference on Trends in Physics which was held in Istanbul on 7-11 Septem- ber 1981. At the time, participants were generous in their praise of the excellence of the programme — both the plenary ses- sions which gave an overview of the dyna- mic physics areas, and the parallel sessions where selected topics were discussed in more detail. (Indeed Europhysics News was taken to task for giving so little room to these last, but the wealth of information presented excluded more than a general preview.) A great deal of editorial work has gone into the preparation of the Proceedings which are an especially complete record of the Conference. Change in Membership FeeWhen the Council of the European Physical Society met in Geneva at the beginning of

April, it was facing an economic situation that it recognized would be difficult to contain without an increased influx of convertible funds. Accordingly, the Executive Committee was empowered to increase the unit fee on 1 January 1983 from the present figure of Sw.Frs. 9. — to Sw.Frs. 10. — should it consider this to be necessary. Previously the principle had been generally accepted that the unit fee should at least keep pace with the rate of inflation in Switzerland and it was also acknowledged that new initiatives had to be properly covered financially, such as the publication of the European Journal of Physics.

Since the meeting in April, there have been encouraging signs that the EPS can look forward to an existence that is rather less precarious than the one it has known in recent years — the number of Associate Members has grown considerably through the personal efforts of a small group of dedicated people and many ideas have been generated by the Finance Committee for improving our recruitment of Individual Members.

From 1 January 1983 then, the annual membership fee will be as follows :4a) Members (no other declared affiliations) : Sw.Frs. 120.—4b) Members (groups such as national physical societies) :

in proportion to the number of their members 4c) Members (members of a member group): Sw.Frs. 40.—4d) Members (members of a collaborating society): Sw.Frs. 50.— s$ 2 5 .—

General ConferenceWith the publication of the Proceedings,

a much bigger audience than could actually attend is now able to appreciate the high level and broad interest of the EPS 5th General Conference on Trends in Physics which was held in Istanbul on 7-11 September 1981. At the time, participants were generous in their praise of the excellence of the programme — both the plenary sessions which gave an overview of the dynamic physics areas, and the parallel sessions where selected topics were discussed in more detail. (Indeed Europhysics News was taken to task for giving so little room to these last, but the wealth of information presented excluded more than a general preview.)

A great deal of editorial work has gone into the preparation of the Proceedings which are an especially complete record of the Conference. The volume is thus a unique review of the state of physics at the present time. Copies are available from the Secretariat at a price of Sw.Frs. 90. — , the low figure owing much to the contribution of the Romanian National Committee for Physics. Individual Members of EPS benefit from the special price of Sw.Frs. 50.— for copies purchased for their personal use.

Europhysics News publishes annually three Meetings Issues: in March, June and November. In the March issue the information received to date is given in full; in the two subsequent issues some entries may be abbreviated and marked by an asterisk (*) indicating that full information can be found in the preceding Meetings Issue of Europhysics News. This issue should therefore be read in conjunction with the June 1982 issue.

The events listed are those for which details were received at the EPS Secretariat in Geneva by October 1982. In general, all events interesting European physicists which take place from six weeks after the

date of publication are quoted. Most readers will already have taken their decision regarding earlier events but like to have as long an advance notice as possible of future happenings.

The listings are in date order divided into two categories — Conferences and Schools. Europhysics Conferences, i.e. meetings organized by EPS, its Divisions and Sections, are printed in bold type and boxed; events sponsored by EPS are printed in bold type; Europhysics Study Conferences are marked by an preceding the date.

For inclusion in the March 1983 issue, organizers should send available details to the EPS Secretariat by 14 February.

Organizers of conferences that are European in concept may apply for EPS sponsorship through the Secretariat.
