Music Evaluation

By Nathan Billingham

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products ?

• We have conformed to most of these convention but at the same time ignored them. Andrew Goodwin talks about a link with visual and lyrics, we have don’t this quite literary with the opening scene with the book we used pictures flying out of the book these are straight links with the lyrics. Using this is creating a direct link with this one track individually. This was very important to keep with the visual and lyrics closely linked as this will start to create the style and image of the artist and how they may use for there other videos starting the brand identity.

• Andrew Goodwin other point is a link with the music and the video. This is very important as this will be giving the artist the brand identity. We felt it was very important that we sing in the video and a lot of close up of the artist and walking towards the audience this will make the audience feel in touch with the artist and his brand and it will be easier to relate to.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

• When is started I had to go back and forth on my digi pack video and advert, as these had to have one whole image and brand and a style, even if the scenery is different they should still have the same style and brand so with a look the audience should know and relate to the band.

• I wanted to use few ideas and designs throughout all three I tried to use the image as my main brand identity with using a time lapse in the video and in the digi pack and advert using a long exposure to capture the moving light. I also use a single guy stood still and a empty photo on the digi pack to relate to the video of being alone.

• For my brand identity I tried to use a more emotional side of being alone in my digi pack I used a shot of traffic but empty and exaggerating it to make it look beautiful and peaceful, for my advert I used the same model as I did in the video with the same effect but with him in the middle emphasizing the brand on being alone and stranded and for the video I used a naturally empty place to set the scene as empty and being alone but still beautiful, and in the video a lot of mid shots and long shots were used to establish this but when the artist was sing they were singing alone staying with the brand until the end when they meet the part again. I tried to make the video very emotional having all of my key ideas of being alone but using the scenery to make it beautiful.

• To show how they worked together I put my digi pack on my advert showing they work together and I have kept the same style and brand identity and establishing there own icon and recognisable style.

What have you learnt from the audience feedback ?

I used a hand written questionnaire and pasted it around a class room of media students after watching the video.

I wanted to get the understanding of other media students by asking very plain and simple questions, for my first one ‘do you like the video?’ I got good feedback and obvious approval of the video.

I wanted to see if it was easy to understand what genre it was to get a basic response on the video and see if I captured the music with the visual. The majority of the response agreed with the right genre from this response I knew I captured the feeling and brand identity I tried to give off

With this question I wanted to see I had identified the right audience and tried to follow that stereo type and conform with there conversions on this style and use in the video I tried to target the video at a more indie but mature group from the response I gathered I did well.

I felt this question was one of the most important and relevant questions as it links with Andrew Goodwin's points. ‘is there a strong relation between visual and the music?’ for this I had to do some research on similar artists and bands to see how they kept the tempo and style. The tempo of the video and the editing was one of the main points I learnt from the similar artists, I also linked at the beginning small animation of key lyrics to make a direct link with the video which makes it unique and the video was made for this track only. From the response it shows that I understood this and learnt from it, as this response is strong it shows that Andrew Goodwin was very helpful and right about the strong connection with the video and the music and from this I have made a video that the audience can understand and enjoy.

I wanted to make sure that there was a slight narrative in the video but didn’t want to make it to strong as I didn’t want it to pull to much attention away from the song. And I wanted the audience not to really understand it the first time as I think this will make the audience want to watch it again and understand the point trying to pull across. From the response I wasn’t surprise the majority understood but people still did question the narrative.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation

stages ?I used such sites as YouTube to research artists and gather ideas and to understand Goodwin's points

I used jamendo to find an unsigned artist and to use there work for our video and to find background information on the artist

I used Photoshop and final cut to edit and create my main video, digi pack and advert

I used excel and power point to evaluate my pieces and to analysis my work with Andrew Goodwin's points.
