In hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the world began…

—Titus 1:2

Billy Graham died this morning. Often referred to as the “Evangelist to the World,” he may well have

been the best-known American Churchman during a career that spanned 60 plus years!

While I never saw or heard him in person, like many of you I watched several of his televised stadium

crusades, as he preached to crowds that easily swelled into the tens of thousands. With his sweeping

gestures, his distinct voice and cadence, and the urgency in his voice, Graham easily overshadowed a

large number of preachers who imitated his crusade ministry.

In many ways, he became America’s pastor. A counselor to several American presidents, some of

whom disappointed him mightily, he was such a fixture in the White House that one journalist re-

marked that Graham “came with the office like the draperies”.

In spite of the company that he kept, Graham carried himself with a humility that was as attractive as

his faith was.

What I didn’t recall, probably because it happened before my time, was that he was also an early

champion of civil rights in our nation. By the early 1950’s he was refusing to speak to segregated

groups, and at one event in Tennessee in 1953, he moved ropes that were intended to cordon off black

and white members of the crowd from one another.

But Billy Graham died this morning. What I will remember most clearly about the man was his single

-minded passion to help others encounter Jesus. And so I shared this devotional, from the Billy Gra-

ham Evangelistic Association website, with Evangel staff before our weekly meeting this morning:

“Life is a glorious opportunity, if it is used to condition us for eternity. If we fail in this, though we

succeed in everything else, our life will have been a failure. There is no escape for those who squan-

der their opportunity to prepare to meet God. Our lives are also immortal. God made us different from

the other creatures. He made us in His own image, a living soul. When this body dies and our earthly

existence is terminated, the soul lives on forever. One thousand years from this day, you will be more

alive than you are at this moment. The Bible teaches that life does not end at the cemetery. There is a

future life with God for those who put their trust in His Son, Jesus Christ.” (February 2, 2018 Daily

Devotional from Billy Graham Evangelistic Association)

The era of Crusade Evangelism, with stadiums filled with tens of thousands of seekers, is pretty well

past in our nation today. But the message that Billy Graham shared, and the hope and grace that is

found in Jesus Christ, remains true still. Our task is to find new ways to share it faithfully.

Two FUN Opportunities to Help with Easter Egg Hunt Outreach!

There are all sorts of ways to help your Evangel Christian Education department with our outreach Easter Egg Hunt! Sign-Ups for both events below will be at the Welcome Center!

Egg Hunt Door Hanger’s Distribution on Saturday, March 17th at 10 a.m. How do people know about our super fun and cool Egg Hunt if we do not tell them? Help us distribute 1,200 door hanger invitations door-to-door to the all our neighbors around the church inviting them to join us for the big Egg Hunt. Please remember by doing so you are helping people hear the Gospel as we will share the Gospel with them at the Egg Hunt. Meet in the lobby at Evangel on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and then if you want come for appetizers at Whistle Binkies afterwards! Is this fun or what?

Egg Hunt Set-Up Party on Friday, March 23rd at 6:30 p.m. Join us at Evangel to help set-up for Saturdays’ Easter Egg Hunt. If you cannot be present to help us Saturday at the Egg Hunt, we could use your help the Friday night before decorating, setting up tables, staging, petting zoo, games, puppet sets, bringing in the tomb from the garage, etc. We will have lots of fun and pizza to boot! This is for everyone! Don’t sit around on a Friday night with nothing to do! Come and join the Egg Hunt set-up party!

“Gobs” of Candy Needed for Easter Egg Hunt

Evangel Christian Education will be filling 5,000, yes, 5,000 eggs with candy to distribute to all the

children who will come to our church on March 24th for our Easter Egg Hunt. Would you consider

purchasing 1 or 2 or 14 bags of candy to help us meet the need?

Please drop off in the Lobby at the candy reception box or bring to Jim Klepper’s

or Clancy Craven’s office. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Palm Sunday Parade for Children & Youth on March 25th! March 25th is Palm Sunday and Evangel Christian Education will have a children’s Palm Sunday Parade

during the Sunday School hour! We will order Palm branches for every child and “pick up” classes at a

designated time until all classes from Nursery 3’s – Youth will be together in one big parade! We will then

stop at a special place and hear the Palm Sunday story told in a fresh and exciting way! Don’t miss this!

It will be a day to remember!

March Kids Club Event—Ronald McDonald House

Evangel Kids Club for March will combine mission outreach with loads of fun and food too! We will gather in the Evangel dinette and gym to make 42 Easter baskets for families staying at the Rochester Ronald McDonald House. These baskets will provide special encouragement to families who are away from home on Easter. We will fill and wrap them “extra special” with candies and toys and all sorts of goodies to help them remember they are not alone. Then we will play LARGE oversized versions of some favorite games in the gym like Dominos, Shuffle-board, Connect Four and more! These LARGE versions of games are super cool and are meant for areas like gymnasiums! We will finish the afternoon with ice cream sundaes with a cherry on top for everyone! What: Making Easter Baskets for Ronald McDonald House families, games and ice cream! When: Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 2—4 p.m. Where: Evangel Church Gym and Dinette Cost: Cash Donation for Ronald to go towards Easter baskets but not required. Please save the dates of July 16-19, 2018 for the 6-year anniversary of Evangel’s Mega Kids Camp! Once again, Evangel Christian Education will invite other church’s and para church organizations to part-ner with us to bring sports, arts, and the Gospel to children of SE Minnesota! This year’s theme will be “Team Spirit” and will help children experience what it is like to be on Jesus’ team! This will be an amazing week for kids! Here are a few highlights:

We will be bringing back our Horse Camp track perhaps offering two levels of horse training!

We are working on a special guest speaker for one rally session of the camp. Stay tuned for details! Adventure camp will return and we hope to be even better prepared as this track somewhat over-

whelmed us last year with so many children. In addition to laser tag, archery tag, climbing walls etc., we will offer some new adventure options that will be sure to create excitement!

Our vision to create an interdenominational Church Leadership Team continues to become a realization. We have confirmed several new churches will join us this year. In addition to Berean Community Church, Oasis Church and Emmanuel Lutheran Church would also like to be involved in 2018. Stewartville United Methodist will also send kids as well as Rochester Sports Mentorship Academy. Our goal has always been to reach as many kids with the Gospel as we can with no church competition, but rather with church unity. It seems to be happening!

Please save the dates now and plan to invite kids and volunteer if at all

possible. We will need all hands on deck for this one!

Save the Date! Mega Kids Camp 2018!

Evangel Spring “Connect” Groups Begin in April

Evangel Spring Connect Groups will begin Mid-April so we are just beginning to formulate our Spring line- up! Perhaps there is a class you would like to see us offer or perhaps there is a topic you are interested in teaching. In either case we would love to hear from you. Classes will be selected and finalized in the next few weeks with the goal of having a detailed brochure available in mid to late March. Our winter classes have attracted a growing number of people and many first time Connect class attendees. Don’t miss out this spring! If you have a class you would like to see offered or would like to teach please contact Jim Klepper or Clancy Craven.

Easter Sunday is April 1st—No Sunday School!

Easter Sunday is April 1. We will not have Sunday School Easter Sunday and encourage families to wor-

ship together. Classes will resume on Sunday April 8! Children’s Church will be available at both services.

Well, our hibernation from winter is finally coming to an end! Thoughts start to turn to Spring as the weather will tease us. Spring also bring thoughts of Easter! Easter is early this year, April 1… (no foolin’) and as like last year, our church is offering opportunities to Serve in the Lord’s name during this Lenten season. This is a great precursor to our mission trips this summer. Plan on attending! Puppets! We will be doing a puppet show during our annual Easter Egg hunt, March 24th. Some of you have already expressed interest in performing. Let Russ know if you’d like to help. We will start practices soon. Youth Sunday Coming in April. Our all-youth led worship service will be coming next month! Pink Flamingos With spring on the way - it’s time to start planning and prepping for flocking. This will start sometime early April, but more details will be available soon! Look to the Youth Board and emails for concrete information. Flamingo request sheets are located below.

Got that “special someone” in your life who could use a little more decoration to their yard? Your problems are over, because the Evangel students are here to help!

For a minimum donation of $20, we will provide a lovely display of 25 pink flamingos in that person’s yard (or all 50 for only $39.95!). They will also see a large “You’ve Been Flocked!” sign that will add just the right

touch that’s been missing! So why wait? Just grab an order form below, seal it in an envelope with your payment and put it in Youth Director’s box or Church Office.

We will notify you as soon as “the flock has landed”.

Dates for flocking: April 8—May 6 (*depending on weather)

All proceeds will go toward our two youth summer mission trips: the Junior High to South Dakota and the Senior High to West Virginia. Thank you so much for your donation!

The Evangel Mission Team met early in February. We spent time looking over correspondence and thank you notes. It is gratifying to learn what is going on with those we support and to feel that we are making a difference in their ministries. Late last year we received some sad news from Kako Retreat Center, whom we support and who ministers to the native peoples in Alaska. Kako was founded by the late David Penz who grew up in this church and who was the son of Carlton and Ruth Penz. Kyle Stevens, a young man on the Kako staff was killed in a plane crash. He left a young family and a big void in the Kako family. Please keep them all in your prayers. We looked ahead to Parker and Megan Ask’s visit in March and April while on furlough. They will be moving from South Africa to Canada with Operation Mobilization. Please keep them in your prayers during this transition. We voted to begin our 2018 disbursements by giving to the Ask’s and to Tyler and Shayne Hart-mann who work with CRU and Athletes in Action. We also gave some support to Gordy Hall and Arlan Walton who are heading to Houston with a Rochester group to help with hurricane relief. Please contact a member of our team: Scott Kerl, Linda Gregg, Barb Weiss, Becky Pierce, Jim Cooper, Bev Morgan and Laura Weiss if you have any questions or ideas about missions.
