Opening Prayers

Taking Refuge and Generating Bodhicitta

༈ སངས་རས་ཆ ས་དང་ཚགས་ཀ་མཆ ག་རམས་ལ། །sangye chö dang tsok kyi chok nam laIn the Buddha, Dharma and the Supreme Assembly

བང་ཆབ་བར་ད་བདག་ན ་སབས་ས་མཆ ། །changchub bardu dak ni kyab su chiI take refuge until I attain enlightenment.

བདག་ག ས་སན་ས གས་བགས་པའ ་བས ད་ནམས་ཀས། །dak gi jin sok gyipé sönam kyiThrough the merit of practising generosity and the rest,

འག་ལ་ཕན་ཕར་སངས་རས་འགབ་པར་ཤ ག །dro la pen chir sangye drubpar shokMay I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings!

Training the Mind in the Four Immeasurables

By the power and the truth of this practice

ས མས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་བད ་བ་དང་བད ་བའ ་ར་དང་ལན་པར་གར་ཅགsemchen tamché dewa dang dewé gyu dang denpar gyur chikMay all sentient beings enjoy happiness, and the causes of happiness,

སག་བསལ་དང་སག་བསལ་ག་ར་དང་བལ་བར་གར་ཅགdukngal dang dukngal gyi gyu dang dralwar gyur chikBe free from suffering, and the causes of suffering,

སག་བསལ་མད་པའ ་བད ་བ་དམ་པ་དང་མ་བལ་བར་གར་ཅགdukngal mepé dewa dampa dang midralwar gyur chikMay they never be separated from the great happiness

devoid of suffering,ཉ་རང་ཆགས་སང་གཉས་དང་བལ་བའ ་བཏང་ས མས་ཚད་མད་པ་ལ་གནས་པར་གར་ཅ ག

nyering chakdang nyi dang dralwé tangnyom tsemepa la nepar gyur chikAnd may they dwell in the great equanimity that is free from attachment and aversion.

The Praise to Mañjuśrī: Glorious Wisdom’s Excellent Qualities

lama dang gönpo jetsün jampé yang la chaktsal loHomage to the guru and the protector venerable Mañjughoṣa!

gang gi lodrö drib nyi trindral nyi tar namdak rabsalwéYour wisdom is brilliant and pure like the sun, free from the clouds of the two obscurations.

jinyé dön kün jishyin zik chir nyi kyi tukkar lekbamdzinYou perceive the whole of reality, exactly as it is, and so hold the book of Transcendental Wisdom at your heart.

gangdak sipé tsönrar marik mün tum dukngal gyi zirwéYou look upon all beings imprisoned within saṃsāra, enshrouded by the thick darkness of ignorance and tormented by suffering,

dro tsok kün la bu chik tar tsé yenlak drukchü yangden sung

With the love of a mother for her only child. Your enlightened speech, endowed with sixty melodious tones,

druk tar cher drok nyönmong nyi long lé kyi chak drok droldzé chingLike the thundering roar of a dragon, awakens us from the sleep of destructive emotions and frees us from the chains of karma.

marik münsel dukngal nyugu jinyé chödzé raldri namDispelling the darkness of ignorance, you wield the sword of wisdom to cut through all our suffering.

döné dak ching sa chü tar sön yönten lü dzok gyalsé tuwö kuPure from the very beginning, you have reached the end of the ten bhūmis and perfected all enlightened qualities. Foremost of the Buddha’s heirs,

chu trak chu dang chunyi gyen tré dak lö münsel jampé yang la düYour body is adorned with the hundred and twelve marks of enlightenment. To Mañjughoṣa, the ‘Gentle-voiced’, I prostrate, and pray: dispel the darkness from my mind!

ཨ་ཨ་ར་པ་ཙ་ན་ད ཿom a ra pa tsa na dhihoṃ arapacana dhīḥ

tseden khyé kyi khyen rab özer gyiWith all of your kindness and love, let your wisdom’s shining light

dak lö timuk münpa rabsal néClear the darkness of my ignorance, once and for all.

ka dang tenchö shyung luk tokpa yiGrant me, I pray, the intelligence, the brilliance

lodrö pobpé nangwa tsal du solTo understand the scriptures—the words of the Buddha and works of the masters.

gang tsé tawar döpa amAnd whenever I wish to look upon you,

chungzé driwar dö na yangOr ask of you anything at all,

gönpo jamyang khyé nyi niLord and protector, Mañjuśrī,

gek mepar yang tongwar shokLet me see you without any hindrance!1

Anyone, who recites this aloud once, seven times, twenty-one times, one hundred times or one thousand or more times a day with a completely pure motivation will gradually purify the obscurations, and will gain immeasurable qualities, such as remembering one’s studies

with confidence and unfailing retention, and the power and strength of wisdom through which one can defeat opponentsin debate.

Anyone who offers praise in this way three times a day will gain the qualities just mentioned and will develop wisdom and compassion, gradually progressing along the paths and stages, gaining ever greater qualities before swiftly reachingthe citadel of omniscience and becoming a great guide to liberate all beings from saṃsāra.

This completes the praise entitled ‘The Splendour of Wisdom’s Excellent Qualities’ composed by Vajrāyudha.2 Itwas translated by Ngok Lotsawa.

Short Mandala Offering

༈ ས་གཞ་སས་ཆས་བགས་ཤ ང་མ་ཏག་བཀམ། །sa shyi pö chü juk shing métok tramThe ground is purified with scented water and strewn with flowers.

ར ་རབ་གང་བཞ་ཉ་ཟས་བརན་པ་འད ། །rirap ling shyi nyi dé gyenpa diIt is adorned with Sumeru, the king of mountains, the four quarters of the universe, and the sun and the moon;

སངས་རས་ཞང་ད་དམགས་ཏ་ཕལ་བ་ཡས། །sangyé shying du mik té pulwa yiThinking of it as the blessed buddha-fields, I offer it.

འག་ཀན་རམ་དག་ཞང་ལ་སད་པར་ཤ ག །dro kun namdak shying la chöpar shokBy virtue of this offering, may all beings here and now

attain the happiness of that pure land!

ཏ་ག་ར་རཏ་མཎལ་པ་ཛ་མ་ག་ས་མ་ད་ས་པ་ར་ན་ས་མ་ཡ་ཨཿཧ།

Requesting the Teachings

༈ ས མས་ཅན་རམས་ཀ་བསམ་པ་དང༌། །semchen nam kyi sampa dangI implore you: according to the temperament

བ ་ཡ་བ་བག་ཇ ་ལ་བར། །lo yi jedrak jitawarAnd mental capacity of sentient beings,

ཆ ་ཆང་ཐན་མང་ཐ ག་པ་ཡ། །chechung tünmong tekpa yiPlease turn the wheel of Dharma

ཆ ས་ཀ་འཁར་ལ་བསར་ད་གས ལ། །chö kyi khorlo kor du solOf all the vehicles — lesser, greater, and general.

Closing Prayers

The Dedication of Merit

༈ བས ད་ནམས་འད ་ཡས་ཐམས་ཅད་གཟགས་པ་ཉད། །sönam di yi tamché zikpa nyiThrough this merit, may all beings attain the omniscient state of enlightenment,

ཐ བ་ནས་ཉས་པའ ་དག་རམས་ཕམ་བས་ཤ ང༌། །tob né nyepé dra nam pamjé shingAnd conquer the enemy of faults and delusion,

ས་ར་ན་འཆ འ ་ར་ཀ ང་འཁགས་པ་ཡ། །kyé ga na chi balong trukpa yiMay they all be liberated from this ocean of samsara

སད་པའ ་མཚ་ལས་འག་བ་ས ལ་བར་ཤ ག །sipé tso lé drowa drolwar shokAnd from its pounding waves of birth, old age, sickness and death!

Dedication from ‘Samantabhadra’s Aspiration to Good Actions’

༈ འཇམ་དཔལ་དཔའ་བས་ཇ ་ལར་མཁན་པ་དང༌། །jampal pawö jitar khyenpa dangJust as the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī attained omniscience

ཀན་ཏ་བཟང་པས་ད ་ཡང་ད ་བཞན་ཏ། །kuntuzangpö deyang deshyin téAnd Samantabhadra too,

ད ་དག་ཀན་ག་རས་ས་བདག་སབ་ཅང་། །dedak kün gyi jesu dak lob chingAll these merits now I dedicate

དག ་བ་འད ་དག་ཐམས་ཅད་རབ་ཏ་བས། །gewa didak tamché rabtu ngoTo train and follow in their footsteps!

དས་གསམ་གཤ གས་པའ ་རལ་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀས། །dü sum shekpé gyalwa tamché kyiAs all the victorious buddhas of past, present and future

བས་བ་གང་ལ་མཆ ག་ཏ་བསགས་པ་ད ས། །ngowa gangla chok tu ngakpa déPraise dedication as supreme,

བདག་ག ་དག ་བའ ་ར་བ་འད ་ཀན་ཀང༌། །dak gi gewé tsawa di kün kyangSo now I too dedicate all these sources of merit of mine,

བཟང་པ་སད་ཕར་རབ་ཏ་བས་བར་བག། །zangpo chö chir rabtu ngowar gyiFor all beings to perfect ‘Good Actions’.1

Prayer for the Long Life of the Masters

tenpé pal gyur lamé shyabpé tenMay the life of the lama, the glory of the teaching, be secure!

tendzin kyebü sateng yong la khyabMay the whole world be filled with holders of the teaching!

tinpé jindak ngatang jorpa gyéMay the wealth and power of the patrons of the teaching increase!

tenpa yün ring nepé tashi shokAnd may all be auspicious, so that the teaching remains for ages to come!

The Prayer in Six Vajra Lines

a revelation of Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa

དས་གསམ་སངས་རས་ག་ར་ར ན་པ་ཆ ༔dü sum sangye guru rinpocheEmbodiment of buddhas of past, present and future, Guru Rinpoche;

དང ས་གབ་ཀན་བདག་བད ་བ་ཆ ན་པའ ་ཞབས༔ngödrub kün dak dewa chenpö shyabMaster of all siddhis, Guru of Great Bliss;

བར་ཆད་ཀན་ས ལ་བདད་འདལ་དག་པ་རལ༔barché kün sel düdul drakpo tsalDispeller of all obstacles, Wrathful Subjugator of Maras;

གས ལ་བ་འད བས་ས ་བན་གས་བརབ་ཏ་གས ལ༔solwa deb so jingyi lab tu solTo you I pray: inspire me with your blessing,

ཕ་ནང་གསང་བའ ་བར་ཆད་ཞ་བ་དང༌༔chi nang sangwé barché shyiwa dangSo that outer, inner and secret obstacles are dispelled

བསམ་པ་ལན་གས་འགབ་པར་བན་གས་ར བས༔sampa lhün gyi drubpar jingyi lobAnd all my aspirations are spontaneously fulfilled.

ཞ ས་གཏར་ཆ ན་མཆ ག་གར་བད་ཆ ན་གང་པས་སང་ཆ ན་གནམ་བག་ག་གཡས་ཟར་བག་ར ་ར ན་ཆ ན་བརགས་པ་ནས་སན་དངས་པའ་དས་བབས་ཀ་གསལ་འདབས་འད་ཉད་བན་རབས་ཤ ན་ཏ་ཆ ་བས་ཀན་གས་ཁ་ཏན་ད་གཅས་པར་ཟངས་ཤ ག། །།

Discovered by the great terma-revealer Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa, fromthe right-hand side of the Sengchen Namdrak rock on Mount RinchenTsekpa, ‘The Pile of Jewels’. Because the blessing of this prayer, oneintended for this present time, is so immense, it should be treasured byall as their daily practice.

The Vajra Guru Mantra

ཨ་ཨཿཧ་བཛ་ག་ར་པད་ས ད་ཧ༔

om ah hung benza guru pema siddhi hung

Prayer for the Tradition of Guru Padmasambhava

༈ མཁན་སབ་ཆ ས་གསམ་ར ང་ལགས་ཆ ། །khen lob chö sum ringluk chéMay the living tradition of Guru Padmasambhava, Bodhisattva Śāntarakṣita and the Dharma-king Trisong Detsen,

འཛམ་གང་ས་གསམ་ཁབ་པར་འཕལ། །dzamling sa sum khyabpar pelSpread throughout the world in all directions!

འག་རད་མཆ ག་གསམ་སང་བ་དང༌། །dro gyü chok sum nangwa dangMay the Buddha, Dharma and Saṅgha be present in the minds of all,

མ་འབལ་དས་གསམ་དག ་ལགས་ཤ ག །mindral dü sum gelek shokInseparably, at all times, bringing peace, happiness and well-being!
