Caterpillar Opens HHP Summit 2013Billy Ainsworth, who founded what is today known as Caterpillar’s Rail Division in the early 1980s, will open HHP Summit 2013 with this morning’s keynote address. His theme: Natural Gas Engines: A Current Reality.Since acquiring Progress Rail in 2006, Caterpillar has in-vested more than $2 billion to expand its rail business, including the acquisition of Electro-Motive Diesel in 2010. “Progress Rail today serves as one of North America’s largest suppliers of products and services to the railroad industry, and Electro-Motive has world-class locomotive manufacturing facilities across the globe,” notes HHP Summit organizer GNA – Gladstein, Neandross & Associates.
Representing Caterpillar, one of the HHP Summit’s title sponsors in 2012 and again in 2013, Ainsworth will share Caterpillar’s natural
gas strategy and focus on the com-pany’s commitment to continue to deliver the best customer value.
Caterpillar strategist Joel Feucht detailed Caterpillar’s commitment to natural gas options across its many engine lines at HHP Summit 2012 in Houston. Caterpillar en-gines fueled by natural gas are hard at work at energy exploration and production sites, and at mines. Cat-erpillar (Booth 212) is working with
partners including Westport Innovations (Booth 123) on locomotive engines that will run largely on liquefied natural gas – displacing most of the diesel they now consume. Its MaK division in Germany delivered its first dual fuel engine for a marine application earlier this year.

GE Power & Water welcomed HHP Summit 2013 attendees to the Expo Hall yesterday evening, trumpeting recent U.S. EPA certifica-tion of its all-gas Waukesha engines for mo-bile oilfield power generation.
Previously, permits or exemptions had to be secured for each location where the en-gines were employed. Fittingly, the line is now branded as mobileFLEX.
The engines can run on CNG, LNG, pro-pane, and field gas, including “hot” gas.
“Rich-burn combustion,” GE says, “helps achieve ultra-low emissions with a lower-cost
three-way catalyst and allows operation on a wide variety of field gases without derate.
“Plus, users benefit from application flex-ibility in altitude and temperature and excep-tional transient performance with diesel-like load capability.”
Early users of the GE engines for energy exploration and production include Antero Resources and Patterson-UTI Drilling, which, under an EPA exemption, have used field gas-fueled GE-Waukesha VHP L7044GSI engines on a drill rig in Harrison County, W.Va.
GE is at Booth 913.
