It is with great pride, that we welcome you to the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup 2014. Welcome to everyone who is taking part in this year’s event: participants, spectators, partners, sponsors, members and all our volunteers.

Since 2012, ’Friends of Cold Hawaii’ have been in charge of arranging the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup in Klitmøller, and we are very proud that the event became a reality again this year.

It would not have been possible, had it not been for a large number of stakeholders in Thy and Northern Jutland, who are all able to see the importance of having such a sig-nificant event take place in our area. An event which creates attention both nationally and internationally. Many people have worked together in order to make this possible. In more than one way, we are riding on a wave of creativity, qualified labor and sustainable tourism. And most importantly we have succeeded in creating a strong image of a quite unique position of strength here in Denmark. We are certain that the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup 2014 in Wave Performance will be an extraordinary experience for everyone taking part in the event.

May the wind and the waves help us create a future-orientated development and energy in Cold Hawaii.

This year, for the fifth time, the world’s best windsurfers meet up in Klitmøller to fight for points for the World Cham-pionship in Wave Performance. The previous four years have been very successful. This is mostly due to the fact that Cold Hawaii time and time again has shown itself to be a place which can deliver the wind and the waves needed in order to make a windsurfing com-petition reach its full potential. Furthermore, contributors, sponsors, members and advertisers have shown an enor-mous support for the event. And last, but not least, the team behind the event is 100% dedicated to the task. This year we have chosen to let the warm-up weekend take place in Nr. Vorupør, which is located approximately 10 km south of Klitmøller. Like Klitmøller, Nr. Vorupør is part of the coastline which makes up Cold Hawaii and a unique area on the Danish west coast. We hope that you will all take time to explore the different qualities, which the area has to of-fer, from Agger in the south to Hanstholm in the north, and everything in between. As surfers, our best moments often take place out in the na-ture. This is also the case in Cold Hawaii, and with the Cold

Hawaii PWA World Cup, we want to be a part of setting an agenda, where the consideration for humans and nature is prioritized. This is why sustainability is very much on the agenda again this year.

Therefore, it is a great pleasure to once again welcome spectators, sponsors and partners. May the weather gods be on our side and bring the best possible conditions, so that, once again, Cold Hawaii will show us what makes it so special.

Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup has had 4 different winners. Who do you think will win this year?

I am pleased to be able to welcome surfers, judges and spec-tators to yet another edition of the World Cup in Wave Per-formance. It has been the municipality’s pleasure to host the previous events, and I am sure that we are in store for another fantastic week in 2014! Cold Hawaii remains the same. Or does it? Every year, we ex-perience new initiatives, which help strengthen the area. For example, this year, we are proud to introduce you to our new sea bath in Vorupør - a unique and amazing experience, com-pletely in tune with the Cold Hawaii spirit. Whenever there is a break from the surfing, I hope that many of you will try out the sea bath. But the sea bath is not all that is new. The entire way that we, as a community, are working with the concept of Cold Ha-waii is changing. For several years, the brand itself has had a great deal of value to us, and the Municipality of Thisted has received a great deal of positive publicity because of it. The name has been spread far and wide, especially due to the World Cup in Wave Performance. Just now, we are moving into a new phase, where another layer is being added to the name Cold Hawaii. In this phase, many people are working very intensely on developing the other potentials of Cold Hawaii. An example of this can be seen in the tourism industries in especially Klitmøller and Vorupør, where the concept of Cold Hawaii has been embraced. They are working towards in-corporating the name into everything from the marketing of the coastline to the development of new Cold Hawaii expe-riences. For example, they are planning to establish a unique and amazing winter swimmer festival based at the new sea bath in Vorupør. This will be a true Cold Hawaii experience, with an emphasis on COLD! I hope that many of you will come

visit us during the winter holidays and take part in this expe-rience. Furthermore, Cold Hawaii and the World Cup have gotten such a strong hold of the local area that an increasing num-ber of private sponsors are stepping in to make sure that the World Cup continues to take place here in Klitmøller. We now have a wide sponsor community made up of private compa-nies and the municipality. The third example is a whole new of incorporating Cold Hawaii. The educational institution ’Thy-Mors HF og VUC’ has estab-lished a 2-year ’Cold Hawaii education’, making surfing a part of the school schedule. Cold Hawaii has even spread all the way to the city of Thisted, where the new ’Thy Cable Park - Cold Hawaii Inland’ was inaugurated in June. All of these initiatives are based on the assumption that Cold Hawaii is not just Klitmøller and surf boards. No, Cold Hawaii is much more than that. It is the entire stretch along the west coast and all the outdoor activities, which can be enjoyed here. It is everything from running and hiking to surfing, cy-cling and riding; but of course surfing is an important and es-sential ingredient. Therefore, it is an honor to bid you all wel-come to the 2014 edition of the World Cup and Cold Hawaii. I hope that you will feel at home here, and that you will make good use of all the area’s unique possibilities for an active out-door life. I strongly encourage you to listen to our local mes-sage: ’The Municipality of Thisted - Follow your nature!’. You can read more about our message and watch our spectacular videos at thy360.dk or thisted.dk.

It is the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), which is responsible for the global World Cup in windsurfing. KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is the only Scandinavian stop on the prestigious PWA tour in wave-performance, which each year ends with the announcement of the new World Champion. The surfers visiting Klitmøller are the absolute best in the world, and they will be competing for important points at Ørhage and the legendary Cold Hawaii spot “The Reef”. The Dane, Kenneth Danielsen is among the 32 best windsurfers, and he is currently the best Danish bet for a top ranking.

KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup makes an effort for the en-vironment. Therefore, we are focusing on three areas where we have a sustainable initiative: waste sorting and sustain-able print materials and service. Do you want to know more about the sustainable initiatives in the Municipality of Thisted? Try the Green App from The Green Thread on www.green.thisted.dk, and see the possi-bilities for nature experiences and experiences concerning sustainable energy in Thy.

1. BOARD: The boards are made of a hard block of foam with a shell of glass and carbon fibres. The sailors typically bring 2-5 boards in different sizes for the competitions. The windier it is, the smaller the board. A typical board is around 230cm long and weighs 6kg.

2. SAIL:The sails are mainly made out of monofilm and nylon. In Klitmøller the sailors will be using sails of between 3.3m² and 5.7m². The windier it is, the smaller the sail they will use.

3. MAST: The masts are made of carbon fibre. They are approximately 370cm long and weigh around 1.5kg.

4. BOOM:Like the mast, the boom is also made of carbon fibre. The boom is the “handle” of the sail, and can be adjusted to fit different sail sizes.

5. WETSUIT: The sailors wear wetsuits made of neoprene, which are very flexible and 3–5mm thick. The wetsuits protect them from the cold.

6. HARNESS:The harness is made of nylon and has a stainless steel hook. The windsurfers wear a harness around the hip in order to be able to hold on to the sail for longer periods of time. The harness can be attached to the boom, and thereby help relieve the windsurfers arms.

KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup has committed itself to be the most interactive event on the tour.

The focal point is the live video streaming, combined with experienced and energetic commentators. As a part of the live stream, it will be possible to chat and ask questions di-rectly, and sometimes the ‘stars’ will participate in the de-bate. We are continuously uploading images from our photogra-phers on Flickr and every a podcast will be made availa-ble containing highlights from the events of the day. These highlights will also be available via the event’s own YouTube channel. Last but not least, our mascot, Cold Hawaii Penguin will join in via his Facebook page, with lots of fun, competitions and great prizes.

THE COLD HAWAII EASY INFO SYSTEMIt is no secret that it can be a little bit hard to figure out what is going on when and where during a windsurfing wave per-formance event. In 2014, we have decided to change this, and therefore we have developed the easy info system.

The only thing you have to do is to download our easy info app. Thereby, you become part of a ’location aware’ informa-tion system. This means, that you will automatically receive the information which is necessary for you to get the most out of the event, when you are located in Klitmøller or on the event location.

COMPETITION RULES AND POINTSThe judges can award the sailors from 1 to 12 points for the manoeuvres or wave-rides they perform during each heat. The sailors are judged in two categories: jumps and wave ri-ding. Jumps are judged based on the level of difficulty, how well the jump is performed and how high it is. In the category of wave riding, the judgment is based on style and how big the wave is. A heat typically lasts for 8–10 minutes, followed by a two-mi-nute break, after which the next heat begins. Depending on the conditions, the sailors will be scored on up to three jumps and three wave-rides in a heat. They compete by the ‘knockout system’, meaning that the person with the most points wins and moves on to the next heat, until there are only two people left in the final. The 32 sailors are placed in a ‘single elimination’, with two people on the water in each heat. The winner of the heat will advance and move on to the next heat.

All sailors are seeded based on previous competitions. The seeding of the individual sailor determines who he will be competing against in the first heat. The single elimination can run for several days. When the single elimination ends, a winner is, technically, found. However, it is possible for all the sailors to get a second chance. This happens if the weather is right, making it pos-sible to carry out a ‘double elimination’.

The results from the single elimination determine the se-eding in the double elimination, so that the winner of the single elimination meets the last man left in the double elimi-nation, if the weather allows it.

At this point the winner of the single elimination is still unde-feated, while the last man left in the double elimination has lost one heat - the one he lost during the single elimination. Everyone else has lost two heats – one in the single elimina-tion and one in the double elimination. If the winner of the single elimination defeats the last man left in the double elimination, he will win the competition. Everybody else will have lost two heats, apart from the win-ner of the single elimination, who has won all of his heats. However, if the winner of the single elimination loses to the last man in the double elimination, the two of them will be tied, with two lost heats each. This will send them on to a ‘Super final’, where the winner of the heat will be the over-all winner.

The double elimination can, like the single elimination, run for several days. If the double elimination is impossible to finish, the result from the single elimination counts.

That means that the winner of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is not found until the double elimination has been sailed, or the competition days are over.
