LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT 3

To Our Valued Supporters:

Fiscal Year 2015 was another outstanding year at the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library. In addition to our traditionally supported projects and events, the Foundation worked closely with BCPL sta to ensure that we supported new and important programs that t with the vision of the organization and helped to meet strategic plan goals. In order to give our donors more opportunities to connect with and support BCPL in fun and dynamic ways, we also added an exclusive donor program and new fundraiser to our calendar of events. These proved so successful that more are already scheduled for FY16 – stay tuned! Quite simply, none of this would be possible without the generous support of wonderful donors like you. Thanks to you, we are able to embody our mission: to ensure opportunities for literacy, reading enrichment and lifelong learning are available to all, in a superior public library system.

In FY15, the Foundation provided support to maintain both Storyville locations, ensuring that the facilities remain at the high quality our customers expect. The results are telling – nearly 110,000 children and caregivers combined to visit Storyville @ Rosedale and Storyville @ Woodlawn. The Foundation, which fully funded the Rosedale location and partially funded the Woodlawn location, remains proud of these visionary early literacy and learning centers for children ages birth through 5, and will continue to provide needed support. The Foundation also provided funding for Summer Reading Club through generous individual donations and corporate sponsorships from Comcast and Rosedale Federal. Studies have shown that reading during summer months helps children retain what they learned in the previous school year and start the next school year ready to learn. Other projects we supported in FY15 include new programs like Battle of the Books and FutureMakers. You’ll nd more information about these programs in this report.

Taste of the Town, our annual fundraiser, was once again a wonderful evening and a great success. While we were sad to leave the Perry Hall Branch, our fantastic host for the rst three years of this event, we were excited to hold our 4th annual Taste of the Town at the Towson Branch. More than 300 guests enjoyed sampling delicious food and drink from 15 restaurants and caterers, bid on fabulous silent auction items and listened to live music, all to bene t the Foundation’s early childhood literacy e orts. This event raises more than $100,000 annually, and we are very grateful for the support we receive from the restaurants, corporate sponsors and guests who purchase tickets. We also celebrated Storyville @ Woodlawn’s 5th birthday by hosting a Breakfast with Sneaks fundraiser inside Storyville. Everyone had fun visiting Storyville before public hours, and kids were treated to stories, crafts, face painting and more. This year, we also provided exclusive donor access to author Carine McCandless before her public appearance at the Arbutus Branch.

Finally, in FY15, we welcomed new director Paula Miller to BCPL. We are excited to partner with her and BCPL as she and the sta implement “Strategic Plan 10.0: Give ‘Em What They Want for the 21st Century.” The Foundation is already busy crafting our new strategic plan to coincide with BCPL’s vision, and we are fully committed to provide whatever support is necessary to help all citizens of Baltimore County explore, learn, create and connect with their outstanding public library system. We ask you to join us as we take steps to generate a bold new future for both the Foundation and for BCPL.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

With sincere thanks,

Je rey W. SmithBoard President

With sincere thanks,

BATTLE OF THE BOOKSIn April and May, the Foundation sponsored seven separate Battle of the Books competitions throughout the BCPL system. Sixteen elementary schools elded teams that tested their knowledge of the Black-Eyed Susan-nominated books, in a quiz bowl format. The $5,000 from the Foundation helped purchase prizes and T-shirts for the participants. It was a fun way to help promote reading to elementary school children.

BREAKFAST WITH SNEAKSOn March 22, the Foundation helped celebrate the 5th anniversary of Storyville @ Woodlawn by hosting Breakfast with Sneaks. A sold-out crowd of 110 had a pancake breakfast and enjoyed exclusive access to Storyville. In addition to being able to hang out with Sneaks, children were also treated to stories, crafts and face painting.

DONOR EVENT WITH AUTHOR CARINE MCCANDLESS AND BCPL DIRECTOR PAULA MILLERThe Wild Truth author, Carine McCandless, visited the Arbutus Branch of BCPL on December 6 for a reading and book signing. McCandless’ book delves further into the life and tragic death of her brother Chris, who’s story was the subject of the bestselling book and subsequent movie Into the Wild. Before the public event, Foundation donors were given exclusive access to a meet and greet with the author. New BCPL Director Paula Miller was also on hand to introduce herself to Foundation donors.

TASTE OF THE TOWNMore than 300 people attended the always popular Taste of the Town. Held on May 9, this 4th annual event was held for the rst time in BCPL’s Towson Branch. Guests sampled delectable dishes from 15 restaurants and caterers, enjoyed live music, bid on fabulous silent auction items and even received complimentary seated massages. We welcomed honorary host Katie Workman, author of The Mom 100 Cookbook, and more than $43,000 was raised to fund our early childhood literacy e orts. Special thanks to Platinum Sponsor M&T Bank.

FUTUREMAKERS Throughout the fall and spring months, the Foundation gave a $2,700 grant to sponsor a series of six programs at the Hereford Branch. The programs, presented by FutureMakers, encouraged teen participants to innovate and create using technology. Participants made everything from spinning lights to mini moving machines, and created such items as stickers, signs and T-shirts using vinyl cutting machines and expert software. These programs are closely aligned with the emphasis now placed on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) disciplines in area school systems.

SUMMER READING CLUBThrough generous sponsorships from Comcast and Rosedale Federal Savings & Loan, the Foundation was once again pleased to support the Summer Reading Club. This year’s theme was Every Hero Has a Story, and more than 57,000 kids from preschool to high school participated. Studies have shown that reading over the summer helps to prevent the “summer slide,” which occurs when students start the next school year behind because they’ve forgotten much of what they learned in the previous year. Reading helps kids keep their minds sharp!

FOUNDATION FOR BCPL ENDOWMENT FOR CHILDREN’S LITERACYIn 2011, the Foundation received a generous bequest in the amount of $475,000 from the estate of BCPL retiree Margaret “Peggy” Peterson. The Foundation Board of Directors decided to use that gift to start the Endowment for Children’s Literacy, with an eventual goal of $1,000,000. Since 2011, the endowment fund has grown to $734,882 through investments and other gifts. Once the $1,000,000 goal is reached, disbursements from this fund will go toward enhancing and supporting early childhood literacy projects at BCPL. In honor of Peggy Peterson, the Peterson Circle was founded to recognize those who have chosen to make a lasting commitment to the Foundation with a provision in their will or estate plan.

STORYVILLEStoryville is an interactive early literacy learning center designed for children ages birth to 5 and their caregivers. Located in the Rosedale and Woodlawn branches of BCPL, Storyville was made possible by funds raised by the Foundation. The child-sized village includes developmentally appropriate books and activities for

preschool children. The environments and activities in Storyville are speci cally designed for caregivers to help their young children enter school ready to learn. The Foundation is proud to provide ongoing support

to properly maintain each Storyville location.
