Oh, What a Night!
Our 2016-17 Installation Meeting took place at the lovely Il Fornaio restaurant in Coronado. Thank you to Margie Wilson of Flagship Cruises and Events, and Colette Morel of Manpower for arranging such a beautiful evening to welcome the incoming Board of Directors and to say a big “thank you” to our outgoing President, Karen Spencer, of Flagship Cruises and Events, for
such an incredible year! A warm thanks and hearty chuckle to Anna McCutcheon of San Diego Theatres, who installed the incoming board with an incredibly clever “Broadway” theme, where each director was given a lovely star shaped keychain and encouraged to take a bow before the Chapter prior to receiving a standing ovation! Since I immediately broke the microphone as soon as I started talking, I would like to take a moment to repeat some thoughts and thanks: Thank You to the women of EWI who molded and shaped our Chapter with such success that I am afforded this incredible opportunity to serve as President. Thank You to the incoming Board of Directors who joins my commitment to honor their legacy as we do all we can to continue to grow and strenghthen our Chapter. Last month we enjoyed a delicious dinner and spectacular views on the patio of Il Fornaio Coronado where we installed our 2016-2017 Chapter Board of Directors. Past President Anna McCutcheon (San Diego Theatres) served as Installing Officer and introduced directors in accordance with a “Broadway” theme, where each was deemed a “star!” The meeting concluded with the passing of the gavel from Immediate Past President Karen Spencer (Flagship Cruises & Events) to President Vanessa Davis (Broadway/San Diego). Congratulations, Vanessa!

Where are you from? Born in Manila, Phillipines; raised in Baguio City, Phillipines. Migrated to the U.S. at age 17. Tell us about your family: Married to Kevin Nash for almost 39 years. Three children: Elke, age 32; Brent, age 30; Kelly, age 27. Work Experience: 23 years at North Island Credit Union – teller, loan officer, executive assistant, registered financial rep; 10 years at Sunshine Communications – Controller/HR Director; five years at National Asset Direct/iServe Companies – HR Director; two months as President/Owner of Payroll Vault. What does your firm do? We offer payroll solutions to small business owners. Small could range from one to 50 employees. As the owner, I handle everything from sales, marketing, payroll processing and administration. What do you and your firm hope to receive from your EWI membership? Professional network and personal friendships. What was your first impression of EWI? Warm group of professional women looking out for each other. We need that. Or I need that. President, Joe Kobryner, for ongoing support, and…on a personal note, I share my thanks with my encouraging and probably way too patient husband, Hassan Davis. Let’s jump in, shall we? Our Board of Directors got right down to business October 22nd at the Board Retreat hosted by Colette Morel at member firm, Manpower. We outlined new initiatives and goals, including unique programs and creative social fundraising opportunities. We also set an outline to achieve the Chapter of Excellence Award, while increasing our visibility in the community. We could use some extra hands in a few areas, so please look for information about our committees at our next meeting and find out how your party planning, dinner reservation talents and Facebook skills could be put to good use! Later this month we will celebrate Thanksgiving…or the day I am often asked, “Would you like some pie with that whipped cream?” (Answer: NO!) As we take time to give thanks for our blessings, let’s have a moment of silence for the families that have an empty seat that was once filled by a loved one, share a thought for families that are struggling to put food on the table, and appreciate our military families…many of whom aren’t able to be together during the holidays. In honor of all of them, I hope your table is surrounded by love, laughter, a lot of gravy and very little politics! W.J. Cameron said: “Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action.” Well, buckle up EWI San Diego, because we are in for an action packed ride this year!
