PAW PRINTS | May 2016 Volume XXVIII Number V 1 EXCRUCIATING PAIN: THE STORY OF CALLIOPE By Bill Suro, VMD I first saw Calliope on the 13th of January. I’m pretty sure that she was named for the Greek goddess, not the music maker on a merry-go-round, but she didn’t look like any kind of goddess when I first saw her. In fact, the last words I heard when I was starting to enter the waiting room to meet Calliope and her owner, was a sarcastic, “Good luck with that case!” Calliope at that point was a puny 5-month-old Great Dane that had to be carried into the MaxFund Wellness Clinic because she couldn’t walk or stand on her own. When I commented on how pitiful she looked, Megan, her owner, said that I should have seen her on Christmas Eve when Calliope was taken to an emergency clinic. At that point, she was shrieking in pain, and the doctor there hinted broadly that euthanasia might be appropriate. As I looked at her (on cortisone plus three of the most potent pain killers we have) all the joints in her four legs were swollen to three times normal size and so painful that she wouldn’t allow us to feel her joints, and she wouldn’t stand up. Calliope had a rare congenital disease of large breed dogs called HOV (an acronym for a long compound Latin scientific name for the disease that causes the growing puppy to attack its own joint tissues.) In fifty six years of veterinary practice Calliope represented the worst case of HOV that I have ever seen. Thank goodness for laser therapy. In the good old days I would not even have had the medicines that Calliope was on now, much less something to cure the problem. And even with laser it took a while. But Megan noticed marked improvement after each laser treatment, from the first treatment on. After the second treatment, she would sit up on her own and started eating on her own. After the third treatment, Calliope could get up and move around. After the fourth treatment she was moving freely and beginning to become like herself again. After the fifth treatment, she was able to go upstairs. After the sixth treatment, Calliope was on her own outdoors. After the seventh treatment, we had to restrain her activity. You see how gratifying the progress was. One by one we were able to stop the narcotics and the cortisone while continuing laser. It took almost two months of laser treatment before the huge wrist and heel joints started to return to normal size and feel; exactly three months before we could be sure that the wrists were going to be straight again. She is now a normal, severely spoiled Great Dane puppy who looks and acts that way. She has grown from 36 pounds to 76 pounds in those three months and has a definite mind of her own. Originally she was a passive lump who looked like she couldn’t care less if she survived. Calliope didn’t just survive, she is thriving AND she is a living inspiration to us all.

FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

The news today is not so much about me, but aboutDad. He asked me to tell you what is happening inhis career, most of which happened before I was born.

Raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C.,Dad went to college at Penn State, where he got abachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science. Then hewent to the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) to gethis veterinary degree.

After four years of practice in the suburbs ofPhiladelphia, Dad moved with his wife and family toDenver. He worked for other vets for four yearsbefore buying a practice in Lakewood with two otheryoung veterinarians. Over the years he bought outthe other two so that he now owned AndersonAnimal Hospital by himself, with four associates.

In 1988, he and his new wife, Nanci, started theMaxFund which has been their primary focus eversince. Nanci, who has been the driving force andExecutive Director from the beginning is still theDirector. Dad, who has been balancing being a veterinarian and being the Medical Director ofMaxFund is now retiring from being a staff veterinarianat the MaxFund Wellness Center. He will still go tothe clinic to consult on different cases, laser treatments, and general health of the animals in the shelters.

I don’t know what all that means, but Dad told me towrite that the news of his demise is premature. Hesaid that this was a quote from another writer likemyself. I hope that you understand this whole thingbetter than I do.

Hi All,

Like I said last month I am ready to go camping but what am I doing, nothing but watching the weather.Mom and Dad decided that now is a good time to redo the garage! Gizmo and I are really curious abouthow it will look, as it has always been a great place to wander around and discover things. Mom says thatit will be great–neat, clean and tidy (whatever that is). Somehow it just doesn’t sound like very much fun.Right now Mom and Dad are both working on the garage every day and we are not getting our daytimesnuggle time. I am feeling very grumpy and Gizmo is ignoring them when they do come in. We will tellyou what we think of this garage stuff when everything is completed.

Here’s an update on human baby. She is still not doing much, but she has finally gotten up on all fours. Not sure why because she is a 2-legger; at least that is what they told us. Maybe she is broken or something. However she doesn’t go forward or backward, she just rocks back and forth. It is a good thing they bringthe food to her or she would starve.

Oh, Oh, Dad mentioned taking the motorhome cover off next weekend! All may not be lost.

See you next month.Your Cat Reporter, Snoopy

LUCKY MUTT STRUT UPDATEBy Tami Tanoue

We have bad and good news about this year’s LuckyMutt Strut, which was scheduled for June.

First, the bad news: Unfortunately, due to the permitconditions imposed for the event, we will NOT be holdingLucky Mutt Strut this year. As you know, we’d movedthe event to Cheesman Park in recent years, and thisintimate park space proved to be a great venue for theevent. We had secured a permit to hold the event atCheesman again this year. Unfortunately, some conditionswere subsequently imposed on the permit that made itimpossible to hold the event safely. Our only optionswere to end the event at 10:00 a.m., or attempt to haveparticipants share the rights-of-way with motor vehicletraffic. MaxFund’s first priority is always to maintainthe safety of human and furry participants alike, so wefelt that we had no choice but to give up our permit. We’ll be exploring the future of Lucky Mutt Strut in2017 and beyond, with the hope of finding a safe andhospitable environment for runners and walkers of thetwo- and four-legged kind. We’ll keep you posted!

But, there’s good news! We’re going to be doing aVirtual Lucky Mutt Strut in June! The internet gives usthe ability to hold an event in cyberspace without worriesabout permits, motor vehicle traffic, bad weather, etc. We’re also planning other fun events for the summer, including a motorcycle run/block party in August! Wehope you’ll join us as we find new ways to put the FUNin fundraising!

Dear MaxFund,

Shortround (the dog formally knownas Shorty) is wonderful! She amazesme every day with her determinationand ability to adapt. She is insanelysmart. Until her, I have never had adog that barks at any animal thatpops up on the television screenwhether real or cartoon. It makes melaugh every time. She gets aroundjust fine in her cart. In fact she hasvisited both of the schools I work atto meet the staff (who all adore her).

More recently she spent a portion of theday at one school visiting with studentsfor various reasons. Reading withKindergartners, discussing different disabilities with 3rd grade, and helping6th graders use their math, technologyand engineering skills to design a vest,of sorts, to provide her with the supportshe gets while in the cart, but alsohave more flexibility to lay downwhen she wants to.

At home she plays so well with herpack-mates. She is always protecting

and looking out for her family. Assoon as I sit down on a couch with heror lay down on the bed, her headimmediately finds its was to my leg ortorso. Obviously, she loves to cuddle. If there was a rank of how well a dogcuddles, I'm positive Shortround wouldcome in close to (if not) the top.

I am so lucky to have her in my pack.

Sincerely,Bracelle

Dear MaxFund,

Phoebe Bumble-Bee

Dear MaxFund,

In 2006 I had to put down my 13-year old cat whowas my companion throughout high school, college, and my young adult years. After 2-weeks of non-stopcrying, my family and I visited 4 different animalshelters looking for the right cat to “pick me out.” (I believe there is a mutual chemistry and connectionthat has to occur when adopting a new pet, and thatanimals also pick their owners!) While at the oldMaxFund building, I connected with a Maine Coonkitten named “Focus” and it was clear that she "wasthe one"! However - she was already reserved byanother interested party, so I asked to be placed on awaiting list in case she became available again. Wewent on to 2 other animal shelters, but I could notstop thinking about the kitten at MaxFund that Ifinally connected with. As fate would have it, laterMaxFund called and told me that Focus was available, and the rest is history! I renamed my little MaineCoon “Phoebe Bumble-Bee” and over the past 10 years she has proven to be my best friend, loyalcompanion, and my #1 fan! She brings me so muchjoy and has been a complete blessing in my life.

So in honor of our 10-year anniversary together, Ithought I'd send you this note from Phoebe herself:

Dear MaxFund,

Thank you for taking me in and taking care of me, andfor taking care of all of the animals at MaxFund. I amgrateful to have found my forever home with my lovingperson - I knew she was the right person for me and Ipicked her out! I am a gentle and sensitive soul, anddevoutly dedicated to my person. I love sitting in emptyboxes, playing with feather and fur toys, and eatingturkey, and ice cream - _whenever my person will letme have a few licks_. I also like "helping" my personwrap presents, grade papers, and file taxes by battingher pens and supplies under the couch, and laying allover everything just in case her papers get blown awayin the wind or something.

When I was a kitten I accidentally learned to play fetchby dropping my cat toys on my person's face while shewas sleeping at night. My person would get irritatedand would throw my toys across the room - so I thoughtit was game! I would run to retrieve my toy and bringit right back to her and again drop it on her face. Whenshe kept sleeping and refused to throw my toys, I wouldbring her new ones since I thought maybe she wanted toplay with a different toy. Sometimes I would bring up to5 different toys during the night and drop them on my

person's face and pillow for her to wake up to the nextmorning. I eventually learned to play during the dayand sleep at night.

I also love being in whatever room my person is in andfollowing her everywhere. We especially like to cuddleon the couch and watch movies and Netflix. Myfavorite thing in the WHOLE world though is beingbrushed! I love to sit on the toilet (lid down) and watchmy person get ready for work each morning. After myperson brushes her hair, she grabs my cat-brush thatshe keeps in the bathroom and brushes my long MaineCoon fur.

Four years after adopting me, my person met her cat-loving boyfriend, and two years later we all movedin together to become a blended family. I eventuallyacquired a younger fur-brother who I am not a hugefan of, since he is a rambunctious Bombay who likes totackle me, and I believe in respecting boundaries. In thelast 6-months, my person and her boyfriend got marriedand bought a house together. I really enjoy the newhouse because there are so many windows to sit in towatch the birds, bunnies, and squirrels. I also like having more room to roam and hide from my brattyfur-brother.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that my personand I are still very happy together and that I appreciatethat you are a no-kill shelter and I am grateful for allthat you do to give animals a second-chance. I hope allof the animals at MaxFund are as lucky as I have beenand eventually find their furever home!

Sincerely,Autumn Boyer and Phoebe Bumble-Bee

MAXFUND PET SEMINARBy Barbara Weller

Our pets depend upon us to provide for them and, aspet parents, we go to great lengths to ensure that theneeds of our pets are met so they can live full andhealthy lives. An important, but often neglected, aspectof pet care is planning for their care after we're gone.

Colorado is one of the few states that allows petowners to create "pet trusts." A "pet trust" is a shortlegal document to ensure that the care we give ourpets during our lives can continue after our deaths. A pet trust would also take effect in case of a debilitatingaccident or any kind of incapacitation.

By creating a simple pet trust, you can: (i) appoint aguardian for your pet, (ii) set aside funds for your pet’scare, and (iii) require the guardian to adhere to specificrules to ensure a consistent quality of life for your pet. A"pet trust" could be the difference between a smoothtransition for your pet and becoming an orphan.

MaxFund and Matthew Saks of Mile High EstatePlanning are proud to offer MaxFund members a freeestate planning seminar and free trusts.for your pets.

MEET THESE MAXFUND DOGSBy Ilene Johnson

CHICO

Chico is an adorable three-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. There are so many wonderfulthings to say about Chico. Firstof all, he is full of personality. Hehas beautiful “red” coloring, with a cute white spot onthe top of his head. He has the most beautiful whiteteeth and a wonderful smile. He has gorgeous browneyes. I could go on and on...

Chico is also full of love: he loves everyone, and greetsthem with enthusiasm! He is good with other dogs andchildren. He really enjoys getting petted. He also doeswell when alone in your home.

Chico loves to run around in a yard and sniff, so having a fenced-in yard would be perfect for him. Healso truly loves his walks. He is great on a leash, andreally is a lot of fun to walk. You can see Chico inaction, playing with his friends in his video; the link tohis video is found under his bio on MaxFund’s website.

This very adorable little boy will be a wonderful additionto your home and family. Please come and meet him.

MARVIN

Marvin is simply marvelous!

Marvin was abandoned through no fault of his own; his family had to move and could not take him along. But their loss will be your gain; this six year old Beagle/Dachshund mixis ready to meet you and let you know how very marvelous he is.

Marvin is a really nice guy who gets along well withother dogs. He enjoys his play groups with other smalldogs. He is housebroken. He also enjoys getting out forwalks, and does so well on a leash. All of the volunteerslook forward to taking him out for a walk.

Marvin is very loving and affectionate, and gets com-fortable with people quickly. He would do best in ahome without young kids. He does love to cuddle, which is yet another of his marvelous qualities. He alsodoes well when left alone in your home.

You can see Marvin in action in his video; you canclick on the link under his bio and see him being simply marvelous.

Marvin is ready for his forever home, and promises tobe a marvelous, loving companion. Please come andmeet him.

RUTH

Ruth is a twelve year old Chihuahua. She is a pretty, petite princess.

This pretty little girl was abandoned through no faultof her own, and was luckily brought to MaxFund. Wehave discovered that she is the perfect lap dog. She isvery mellow, and loves to be petted and to be nearher humans.

Ruth does love to play, and gets along well with othersmall dogs. She really enjoys interactions with theother dogs in her play groups. (We would think thatthe other dogs treat her like royalty, in recognition thatshe is in fact a little princess!) She also walks very wellon a leash. She loves a leisurely walk, and enjoys checking out her surroundings.

This little princess likes kids, especially older kids, and is not sure she has met any cats yet. Ruth is anolder girl, and has a few health issues: she has a heart murmur, which does not slow her down, and sherequires medication for her eyes, which is easy toadminister.

Ruth needs a loving home in which she can live outher retirement. You can see this petite princess beingher usual sweet self in her video (look under her bioon the MaxFund website, where you can click on thelink to her video). Let’s make this little princess’sdream of a forever home where she can be yourforever lap dog come true!
