Principal For a Day Program Last Tuesday, Sally Matheson from the Tomorrow Today Foundation, was Principal for the day at Benalla P-12 College. This was part of a statewide program, where people from outside the education community, have the opportunity to spend a day with a principal to get an in-depth view of how a school operates. Sally attended some meetings with me, visited classrooms and spoke with students and staff about their work. It was an enjoyable day for both of us and a great opportunity to showcase the many positive aspects of our school. I have been incredibly impressed by the quality of the applications as well as the confidence shown by each of the students during the interviews. Applicants will be notified by Wednesday this week, whether or not they have been successful. Proud and Deadly Awards On Wednesday, a number of our indigenous students attended a ceremony at the Town Hall where they were presented with awards recognising the efforts and achievements at school. There were quite a few – too many to list here – and they should all be very proud and congratulated for their awards. Thanks you to staff members Hamish McPherson and Paul Hansen for taking the students down. PRINCIPALS MESSAGE CONTINUED…….. Maintenance Funding You may also have heard in the media last week that the DET have increased funding for school maintenance budgets. This has been communicated to us and Benalla P-12 will receive almost $400000 additional funding over the next two years. This funding is targeted to specific areas, and will certainly make a difference to us and allow us to complete some important and overdue projects. Uniform Survey Thankyou to those parents who have taken the time to complete the uniform survey. This provides important feedback to us about our current uniform and the related policy. If you have not yet done so, hard copies of the survey are available at each campus office. Parent Teacher Interviews Please remember to book for our upcoming parent-teacher interviews. This is done via Compass – if you need assistance, just call the office at any campus or drop in. Attending these interviews ensures that you receive feedback about your child’s performance and achievement at school and also have the opportunity to ask questions. Tony Clark Executive Principal PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Compass is now open for parent / teacher interviews on Thursday 19th September from 4 – 7pm and Friday 20th September from 9 – 12.00pm. If you need assistance to make a booking please call or drop into any campus office. We encourage all parents to make a booking and come along to see your child’s teachers. ATTENDANCE- EVERY DAY COUNTS FURTHER ASSISTANCE WITH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. Sometimes you may need assistance from professionals who can help anxious children. Discuss your concerns with relevant teachers or wellbeing staff at your child’s campus. They can help address any school-based issues, refer your child to school counselling services and make recommendations about professional support. Alternatively, you could seek support from your GP who can assist with a referral to a mental health professional such as a psychologist, psychiatrist or therapist. They can help your child overcome their anxiety using mindfulness, improve self-confidence and self-esteem and helping children change the way they think about difficult situations. During the upcoming school holidays, it is the perfect time to put this strategy into place, so your child will get the assistance that they need. Help us to help you, please contact one of our Wellbeing team, Bron, Lou, Craig or Scott to assist with your child and their attendance. WALLER ST CAMPUS NEWS HIGHLIGHTING EXCELLENCE

Year 3/4 Carracher have been reading and writing in the Informative Genre. In the Writing Workshop we have been creating an informative brochure about the Waller Campus for the purpose of informing Year 2 students and new families. We began the process by brainstorming everything we knew about our campus. Then we planned the subheadings and information we would include. The drafting stage lasted over a number of weeks. We included factual information, unique features and made careful word choices that were appropriate for our intended audience. Finally, we revised, edited and conferenced our writing before pucblishing our brochures in Google Slides. We are just about to print our final brochure and are looking forward to sharing them with an audience in the next few weeks.

WALLER ST STUDENT LEADERSHIP GROUP DRESS YELLOW DAY

Last week the Waller Street SLG ran a number of activities to raise money for Daffodil Day. The fundraising effort was launched on Monday afternoon at the Campus Assembly. Members of the Student Leadership Group spoke to everyone about the purpose of the fundraising and how every dollar raised would go towards life-saving cancer research. The SLG sold merchandise across the entire week. Many students bought pens, wristbands or pins. There was also a very generous response from parents and visitors who came through the Waller Office.

One of the highlights of the week was the delicious lemon slice that was sold on Friday at recess time. Thanks to Amanda and her amazing volunteers who supported the SLG with making, icing and slicing throughout the week. Nearly 200 pieces were cut up and there were very few left! The week’s activities were brought to a very bright, happy, yellow conclusion on Friday at lunchtime when students across all year levels placed a paper daffodil in the Garden of Hope and gathered for a team photo. The Waller SLG would like to sincerely thank students, staff and parents for supporting their fundraising efforts and helping them to raise an amazing… $492.90

PRIMARY NEWS STEM In STEM, the Preps made tunnels for Meerkats. They joined the straws by squeezing and folding the straws to insert them into each other, and they also used tape. Meerkats live in Africa. Meerkats use their sharp claws to dig the tunnels in the ground. The tunnels are their homes where they are protected from predators.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Last week the Avon and Waller Street students were invited by speech pathologists, Bernie and Jess, to complete a colouring in competition. The colouring page promoted ‘Communicating with Confidence’ which was the theme of speech pathology week this year. In Australia today, communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight. Yet, Communication, by definition, involves at least two people. It is important that everyone understands that communication is more than speech. The ability to communicate effectively is essential because without it people cannot maximise future educational, health and social outcomes. Only 38 per cent of Australians with communication disability are participating in the workforce compared with 80 per cent of people without communication disability. People with communication disability are also less likely to have a non-school qualification (42 per cent), than those without communication disability (61 per cent). However, this can often be turned around with intervention from a Speech Pathologist. Congratulations to our colouring competition winners, Rebecca Heatherill and Kayley Haskew-Jones, who each won a cookbook as a result of their terrific work.

FAITHFULL ST CAMPUS NEWS 8OED WARBY RANGES BUSHWALK On the 28th of August 2019 the year 8 Outdoor Education class went on a hike at Warby Ranges for the day. We started at the carpark and went up the Sunrise loop and while we were walking Cam called Camouflage and we all had to hide. We played 3 games of it and then we kept walking. Soon we got to an intersection and we went along the Taminick loop, once we got all the way past the Taminick loop we went up a really steep hill and then had lunch. While we had lunch some students were running up and down the steep hill and seeing how long it would take them to get back up. Once everyone finished we played 3 more games of camouflage and then started walking. In class we have been learning about navigation and how to read maps and contour lines. Using these skills we were able to navigate our way back to the beginning of the track, stopping at a few lookouts on the way. By Bailey Bickerdike and Jazmine Blyss

POSITIVE PARENTING

PARENTING BOYS

insights Are you asking your kids to step up? by Dr. Deborah Gilboa

We do a lot for our kids, because we love them and often they need us. But we forget that one of the best things we can do for our kids is to help them learn to do for themselves and for others.

Do you ask your kids to do chores, to help out on a regular basis? You would be surprised how many parents – who were raised doing chores – don’t ask the same of their kids. If you do give them chores, do you sometimes go behind them and redo the work when they’re done? Don’t! If it’s not done right, get your child to fix it.

When I ask why parents don’t give chores or why they don’t challenge their kids with hard things – and I do, all over the world – parents tell me it’s because kids are too… busy! They’re working their tails off on classwork, teams, clubs, groups, trying to excel at 100 different things! So adults are willing to take on every other responsibility in their lives in order to facilitate these goals. And it’s hurting kids.

We drive them everywhere – fewer teens are seeking drivers’ licences each year. We type their work, do their research and try to buy them anything they or we think might possibly increase their success. We solve every problem and bulldoze over every potential obstacle. And kids accept this as the natural order of things.

We are stepping in front of our kids, when in fact we should be stepping back and allowing our kids to step up.

It’s sounds like tough love, but it’s not. This is parenting. This is making sure that our kids, in just a few short years, don’t still need us to do everything for them. Our kids know that we are expert problem-solvers. Now it’s their turn to step up and learn to help themselves and others.

So how can we let kids step up? Here are a few tips you can try right now with kids of any age.

1. When your child or teen comes to you with a problem, don’t fix it. Say “You’re a good problem-solver. What do you think?” And then listen to the answer.

2. Expect them to fail, and talk about what they’ll do when (not if) that happens.

3. Give them tasks to do that help the whole family (not only themselves) and make sure they do them, until it’s done well. Be patient, but firm.

It’s crucial that you take a step back and let your kids make mistakes and learn from their experiences. You aren’t going to be there in adulthood to clear the obstacles they face or solve the struggles. They eventually will have to make decisions and find solutions on their own and they will be ill-prepared if they weren’t allowed to make those mistakes under supervision while you’re right there to show empathy and give support!

We're a Parenting school parentingideas.com.au/schools

You may be thinking “but what if there’s an emergency and I have to jump in?” Well, first define emergency.

Two percent of the time, kids need an adult to jump in front of them and solve the problem. They need an adult to protect them from a life-threatening issue that overwhelms their internal resources such as when they experience bullying, mental health issues and eating disorders.

The other ninety-eight percent of the time kids need a compassionate adult to take an interest, from a distance, without fixing anything. So step back so that a child or a young person can step up and handle problems and dilemmas themselves.

YOU CAN ATTEND OUR UPCOMING WEBINAR, STEP BACK SO KIDS STEP UP, AT NO COST!

ABOUT THE WEBINAR Children and teenagers are capable of so much more than they are often given credit for. Closing the expectation gap between what adults believe kids and young adults are capable of, and allowing them to create their own solutions to the challenges they face will greatly impact their resilience, and society as a whole. In this webinar, Dr. G will outline the practicalities of doing that, and the guiding principles that will make it possible.

WHEN Wednesday 18 September 2019 8:00pm AEST.

PRICE This webinar is $37 per person to attend, and is free of charge to families at schools that have a membership.
