Executive Summary
2Source: 2013 Working Mother Best Companies for Hourly Workers
The purpose of the Best Companies for Hourly Workers initiative is to recognize American corporations that create and use best practices to support their non-exempt employees.
Since 2010, the Working Mother Research Institute has asked companies whose workforces comprise at least 50 percent hourly employees to tell us how their flexible work arrangement systems, training and education programs and advancement policies affect their non-exempt workers.
The 2013 application included questions in the following areas:
◆ Company Profile◆ Company Culture and Work Life Programs◆ Workforce Profile◆ Benefits◆ Training, Development and Advancement◆ Work and Flexibility◆ Paid Time Off and Leaves
Background on the Initiative

Research Methodology
Completed applications for the 2013 Best Companies for Hourly Workers initiative were collected online from June 15 to September 14, 2012.
To qualify, a company must have at least 500 U.S. employees, and at least half of its U.S. workforce must be non-exempt.
Winning companies were selected from a pool of self-selected applicant companies and ranked numerically based on the data they provided in their applications.
Winners were selected based on these applications and will be announced in the April/May 2013 issue of Working Mother magazine and on workingmother.com/bestcompanies.
Statistics reported are aggregated from the data collected from the 12 winning companies.
4Source: 2013 Working Mother Best Companies for Hourly Workers
The 2013 Best Companies for Hourly Workers support their non-exempt employees in ways that many large employers do only for their salaried ranks:
All Best Companies offer full-time non-exempt employees personal and family health insurance, dental and vision coverage, prescription drug coverage and tuition benefits.
All Best Companies offer job-skills training that takes place during work hours for normal pay.
All Best Companies offer flextime to non-exempt employees, and 68% of eligible workers use it. That is a slight decline from last year, but the percentage of hourly employees using telecommuting and compressed work schedules rose.
Employees at the Best Companies are earning more money this year. The proportion of non-exempt workers earning less than $12 per hour fell to 30% from 46% among employees at the 2012 Best Companies.
