*Chapter 11, Section 8 of the “Rules Applying to Dog Shows” provides that a Neutered Male or Spayed Bitch may be entered as a Veteran.

Coursing Class (divided by Sex). For dogs and bitches who are AKC registered and are confirmed lure coursing champions or open field coursing champions Titles may be earned from any recognized coursing organization. NOTE: Exhibitor MUST supply proof of eligibility for the class with entry. A copy of the certificate awarding the title or a copy of the ENTIRE PAGE from either the AKC Awards or FAN magazine publishing the title will be accepted as proof and MUST accompany the entry form. First place winners are eligible for Best of Breed competition provided all AKC eligibility and require-ments have been met.

Winners of the above class are eligible to compete in Best of Breed Competition.

BEST OF BREED (No defeated dogs will be allowed to compete)

The following categories of dogs may be entered and shown in Best of Breed competition: Dogs that are Champions of Record. Dogs which according to their owners records have completed the requirements for a championship but whose championships are unconfirmed. The entry and showing of dogs whose championships are unconfirmed is limited to a period of 90 days from the date of the show where a dog completed the requirements for a championship according to the owner’s records. If, at the end of the 90 day period, the championship of a dog has not been confirmed by AKC, no further entries of the dog for Best of Breed competition are to be made until its championship has been confirmed by AKC.

NON-REGULAR CLASSES INVOLVING MULTIPLE DOG ENTRIES Stud Dog Class: For dogs that have sired two dogs or bitches entered in this show. The award will be based on the merits of two of the get. The owner of the stud dog need not be the owner of the get. As the judge’s decision in this class will be based on the merits of more than one dog or bitch, no one of the dogs making up the entry judged first in the class will be eligible to compete for Best of Breed by virtue of having won this class. The Stud Dog must appear in the ring with two of his get and be entered in the Stud Dog class. Brood Bitch Class: Same as for Stud Dog, but replace get for produce. Extended Generation: The class entry must be made up of a minimum of 3 generations of Salukis with one direct descendent from each successive generation, i.e. Dogs A,B, C: A is sire/dam of B who is sire/dam of C. Judge’s decision is based on merits and likeness of get. The Winner is not eligible to compete for Best of Breed by virtue of having won this class. Brace Class: For two dogs or bitches of the same breed with identical ownership. Parade of Veterans: This is a non-competitive class. Entrants must be seven (7) years of age or older. Each Veteran will be presented with a rosette with the dog’s name embossed in gold leaf. Entry is $8.00.

AWARDS OF MERIT: Often times at a specialty the number of quality dogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed, one Best of Opposite Sex, one Grand Champion Select dog and one Grand Champion Select Bitch Receiving an Award of Merit rosette acknowledges that this Saluki was under consideration for one of these awards and indicates recognition of an exceptional Saluki who could, on another day, merit a top award.

The San Angeles Saluki Club allows for 3 Awards of Merit to be presented in addition to Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Grand Champion Select Dog and Grand Champion Select Bitch. The judge may, at his discretion , award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving an “Award of Merit” is, indeed, a significant honor.

THE “TANYA” TROPHY This trophy is in honor of SBIS Am Mex Int Can Ch Issibaa’s Tannya, CD FCh. It is a 16 inch sterling silver ice bucket mounted on a wooden base with 24 name plates. Donors of the trophy are Jim, Sharon and Jonathan Kinney, ISSIBAA. The trophy is awarded annually to the winner of Best of Breed. The owner does not need to be a member of SASC for pos-session. The trophy will be returned to the donors upon retirement.

THE “RED BIRD” TROPHY This trophy is in honor of International, World, American, Mexican, Canadian Champion Baghdad’s Crimson Gazelle. It was donated by BAGHDAD KENNELS, Al and Mary Bockman and Paula Bockman Ewles. This trophy is awarded annually to the winner of Best of Opposite Sex.

THE CH ISSIBAA’S GHAHEEB TROPHY This trophy is donated by Don and Mary Bockstadter (AMAN KEBIR) in honor of Champion Issibaa’s Ghaheeb. This gold loving cup with winged victory handles on a wooden base is awarded annually to the winner of the Veteran Dog Class. The trophy is to remain with the winner for one year.

THE AL CALIPHS TROPHY This trophy is donated by Deborah Copperthwaite of Al Caliph Kennels (England) and is one of a limited edition of 6 bronze reliefs of a standing Saluki. This trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the Stud Dog Class. The trophy remains in the possession of the club.

THE “TEESHMA” TROPHY This trophy is dedicated to American, Mexican Champion Jen Araby Teeshma’at and donated by ISSIBAA, Reg, Sharon and Jim Kinney. It is awarded annually to the winner of the Brood Bitch Class.

THE RED ROYALE MEMORIAL TROPHY This trophy is an antique Best in Show (1949) gold punch bowl and is given in memory of 1979 World Champion, International, American and Mexican Champion Crown Crest Red Royale. It is donated by Kay Finch / Len and Charline Lundgren, CROWN CREST, Reg and is awarded annually to the winner of the Extended Generation Class in honor of past and future generations of Salukis.

MEET OUR JUDGES

In 1970, I bought my first saluki. I called him "Boo." He became Ch Pajarito Chabuk, FCH, CD. He earned each of the performance titles in 3 tries. I believe he was the first saluki outside of CA to get a FCH. He set my idea that a show saluki can be, and should be, one of the canine world's finest athletes.

Over my 44 years in the breed, I have bred many lure coursing and open field champions, always breeder handled. Many of these same salukis were bench champions. So, I'm well aware of the show ring, too. I bred and handled 3 Best of Opposite Sex bitches at SCOA National Specialties. One of which also was BOS at AKC's Bi-centennial in Philadelphia.

I believe in our standard, especially the emphasis on moderate. The sentence, in our standard, that is one of the most important is:

'The whole appearance of this breed should give an impression of grace and symmetry and of great speed and endurance coupled with the strength and activity to kill gazelle or other quarry over deep sand or rocky mountains.'

A bit poetic perhaps but that comment is firmly in my unconscious and conscious mind, when I judge. It also acknowledges the thousands of years behind the breed we all own and care about protecting.

After making my choices, the placements should indicate who I would like to take to the field. That said, there is no way most of my choices will ever be asked to chase live game, but hopefully exhibitors will have an understanding of my placements.

MEET OUR JUDGES

Looking back, I see a panoply of running, romping, giddy Salukis slide through my life in a rainbow of colors, and I am the richer for knowing them. Whatever color or style I might surround myself with, when judging I see all coat types, colors, patterns, feathering as equal. Ours is a breed with a wide range of accepted sizes and shape, with an emphasis on moderate and functional structure.

Salukis were never bred to race around the show ring at a flying trot. Traditionally our dogs were meant to hunt game at full gallop, and when seeking the game they might use a combination of maneuvers to sight and flush their quarry. They should be encouraged to carry themselves by light contact on the lead, at a speed which allows the opportunity to show themselves to best advantage.

No matter how well our Salukis disport themselves in the ring, we can not see what truly matter: their whimsical, engaging personalities, sly humor and deceptive naivete, generally hiding a cunning mind. Whatever drew us to Salukis in the first place, whether it was the grace in motion or the keen eyed hunter, their unique personalities earned them a permanent place in our lives. The hunter in the field, the Saluki proceeding gravely around Agility obstacles, the high headed hound in the show ring with ears blowing in the wind of their passing...all of them go home to their own place on the couch and in our hearts. And we are the richer for knowing them.

I want to thank San Angeles for inviting me to judge this prestigious event, bringing me back to good memories and cherished friendships. I look forward to sharing the day with our beloved hounds.
