What is hydramnios? Hydramnios, amniotic fluid disorder, or polyhydramnios occurs when too much amniotic fluid builds up during pregnancy. What causes hydramnios? The fluid surrounding the fetus inside the uterus is called “amniotic fluid”. It comes from the baby’s kidneys, and it goes into the uterus from the baby’s urine. This fluid gets absorbed by the baby when it swallows and through breathing motions. Up until the 36th week of pregnancy, the amount of this fluid increases. After that, it slowly decreases. If the fetus doesn’t swallow enough or makes too much urine this fluid will build up causing hydramnios. What are the Risks of Hydramnios? Mild hydramnios is more common than severe hydramnios and may not cause any problems. Extra fluid that appears during the second trimester often returns to normal on its own. Severe hydramnios may mean there’s a problem with the fetus. Consult your health care provider. They will look for these problems with your fetus: Birth defects of the brain and spinal column Blockages in the digestive system A genetic problem (an inherited problem with the fetus’s chromosomes) How Will I Know if I have Hydramnios? There are no symptoms for mild hydramnios, but tell your health care provider if you have: A hard time breathing Belly pain Swelling or bloating of your belly Your health care provider will measure your “fundal height” during your prenatal check-ups to check for hydramnios. Fundal height is the distance from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus. Your health care provider will also check your baby’s growth by feeling your uterus through your belly. Hydramnios cannot be prevented. If you have symptoms, tell your health care provider so you can be checked and treated, if needed.
