Plymouth is home to many attractions including the National Marine Aquarium, the UK’s biggest aquarium, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Plymouth Pavilions, Ski Slope and Snowboard Centre and Dartmoor Zoo, which inspired the making of the Hollywood blockbuster - ‘We Bought a Zoo’.

The Barbican and Sutton Harbour is one of Plymouth’s most popular places to visit, with quaint cobbled streets, a picturesque harbour and a wealth of independent shops, galleries, bars, cafes and restaurants along the water’s edge creating a metropolitan feel.

It’s also home to the Elizabethan House as well as the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail on their voyage to the New World in 1620.

Plymouth Hoe is where Sir Francis Drake is renowned to have played his last game of bowls before his sailing voyage to engage with the Spanish Armada. Also home to the iconic Smeaton’s Tower, Tinside Lido, Royal Citadel and the city’s war memorials the Hoe a large open-space and jaw-dropping views.

Take a trip to the Royal William Yard, which was designed by Victorian architect Sir John Rennie and constructed between 1825 and 1831. The Yard is considered to be one of the most important groups of historic military buildings in Britain; it is also the largest collection of Grade 1 listed military buildings in Europe. Stroll around the Yard and take in the atmosphere and imposing buildings as well as stop off at one of the many eateries for a spot of lunch, afternoon tea or dinner.

If you like to shop, the city centre features many independent retailers as well as national brands and high street names in its varied shopping areas. Regularly hosting outdoor markets visitors will often get to taste Devon’s fantastic local produce. Head to Plymouth City Market to find a great selection of clothes, food and gifts.

Take your time wandering around the extensive range of independent and specialist retailers in the Independent Quarter, pick up unique pieces of art from the Barbican’s Historic Quarter or enjoy shopping in Plymouth’s landmark shopping centre, Drake Circus.

DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK

Dartmoor has a rich and varied cultural heritage, ranging from prehistoric remains, through buildings and settlements of medieval and later origin, to its customs and traditions, some, such as the famous Widecombe Fair, still thriving. All combine to give Dartmoor a distinctive character and make it a fascinating place to visit. Dartmoor’s landscape is among the richest in western Europe in terms of its archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world and has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks.

Dartmoor’s blanket bog, upland oakwood, caves and mines are among habitats of international importance.

The National Park operates three Visitor Centres and these are great starting points to explore the area. The National Park Visitor Centre in Princetown has a superb free to enter exhibition area where you can find out about the Dartmoor story and discover more about the building’s connection with Conan Doyle and how he was inspired to write the Hound of the Baskervilles. Try out the new Sherlock Holmes interactive display, watch stunning films and learn about Dartmoor’s myths and legends.Children can enjoy exploring darkest Dartmoor in the centre’s spooky cinema.

Its deep wooded valleys, high cliffs, wide open moorland and clear streams provide inspiration and enjoyment to both locals and visitors. The farms and villages that have developed over hundreds of years combine to create a rich landscape that belies the National Park’s relatively small size of 267 miles2 (693km2).

Exmoor is also an amazing place to marvel at the wonders of the night sky and in recognition of its dark skies and the work that the National Park is doing to keep them that way, Exmoor was designated Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve in autumn 2011. Exmoor National Park supports a fascinating variety of wildlife including herds of wild red deer and free living Exmoor ponies, rich lichen communities, rare fritillary butterflies, bats and other species uncommon in southern Britain.

Exmoor National Park Authority works with others

to protect the special qualities of the National Park. It also provides a number of services from planning and conservation to high quality visitor information and maintaining Exmoor’s excellent network of waymarked footpaths and bridleways.

The amazing new Lynmouth Pavilion was opened just over a year ago and is home to the National Park Centre and the Heritage Lottery Funded Lynmouth Pavilion Project which is set to deliver another fun programme of events this year.

The Centre has a mix of high tech and more traditional exhibits with everything from a huge touch screen table and iPads to a traditional seaside photo board. There are also National Park Centres in Dulverton and the medieval village of Dunster with displays related to the local area.

23 May - 3 June Exmoor Coast Festival 2015 This year’s event will include activities all along Exmoor’s coast in Minehead, Porlock, Lynmouth, Heddon Valley and Combe Martin, as well as various locations in between. Watch out for events listed online and advertised throughout the area.

25/26 Sept Exmoor Wood Festival Celebrating all that’s special about Exmoor’s wonderful woodlands. Involving partners it will showcase woodland management through the ages, as well as having guided walks, charcoal burning, woodland crafts as well as workshops for children more information nearer the time, check online or at a National Park Centre.

Exmoor was designated Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve in autumn 2011.

Devon’s environment has something to offer throughout the year, indeed many sites are best visited out of season. Nothing can beat an exhilarating cliff top walk on a blustery winters’ day, the vivid autumn colours as you stroll through woodlands or the activity in the estuaries, teeming with migrating and wintering birds. Our heaths and moorlands take on their own unique beauty during the winter months and the stunning displays of spring flowers such as wild daffodils and bluebells are simply breath-taking.

Devon provides endless opportunities for all ages and abilities to get out and active. Leave the car at home and use the integrated bus and train network to access multi-use routes, ideal for safe and easy walking or cycling. A number of accessible trails are suitable for families with young children and pushchairs or the elderly and those who use wheelchairs. So why not take a weeks’ holiday to walk a section of the

South West Coast Path or cross the county from north to south coast along the Two Moors Way? Or take a day out with a leisurely cycle ride around the Exe Estuary or for the more active go mountain biking in the Tamar Valley.

For those who enjoy wildlife Devon has an abundance and variety that few other parts of Britain can rival. From wintering avocets to Dartford warblers and cirl buntings, even the most enthusiastic bird watcher will find something to excite.

DEVON / SOMERSET BORDER

Exmoor National Park, although one of Britain’s smaller national parks, is certainly big on beauty with an amazing variety of landscapes encompassing high cliffs that plunge down to the sea, gorse and heather covered moorland, ancient woodlands, valleys and rivers. The many footpaths are well maintained by the National Park rangers team based in Dulverton.

Exmoor is partly in North Devon with the larger part being in Somerset. The border between the two counties on the coast is at County Gate where there is a visitor centre giving information to enable you to get the most from your visit to the area. Nearby are the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, linked by a Victorian water-powered cliff railway, and thatched buildings on the harbour side make a picturesque scene.

Travelling from the border into Somerset, after descending one of the steepest hills in England, is the village of Porlock with interesting shops and quaint tearooms and a falconry centre at the village of Bossington. The nearby National Trust village of Selworthy is famous for its thatched cottages on the green.

Further along the Somerset coast is the town of Minehead where you can take a steam train ride

on England’s longest heritage railway through 20 miles of coast and glorious countryside. The first stop off the train from Minehead will take you to Dunster station where a short walk will bring you to the medieval village with its ancient buildings and cobbled footpaths, nestled beneath the magnificent Dunster castle and gardens.
