Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center FALL 2013 DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is hosting a new engaging mini-exhibition for family audiences about nanoscale science, technology and engineering (nano). Visit the all-new children’s museum to imagine and discover the nanoscale world – a world so tiny it’s too small to see. The 400-square foot exhibit includes hands-on, interactive acitivities that invite exploration of nano phenomena and real world applications and implications. At the Small, Smaller Nano exhibit, you can play with magnets to explore how material behaves differently at different sizes. At the Build a Giant Carbon Nanotube exhibit you can use foam construction pieces to make a large model of a tiny structure called a carbon nanotube. There are plenty of examples of nano in nature, technology and your own home. Where Can You Find Nano? lets you listen, look and touch to discover nano all around you. At Balance our Nano Future, a variety of blocks represent the challenge of trying to create a stable nano world – can you balance all the blocks on the tippy table? Throughout the exhibition, interactive panels provide information on tiny solutions for big problems, exciting technologies inspired by nature and different perspectives on nanotechnology. The Closing Conga Line was developed by our great staff in an eff ort to create even more fun in the museum and visitors just love it. This is a post from a very happy mom “Our family loves your museum! Yesterday was the fi rst time we stayed until closing, and I was dreading having to drag my son out, kicking & screaming. But then we saw a giant chicken dancing and leading a parade through the museum, all the way to the

exit! We joined in, playing instruments & following that funky chicken. All without tears from my son. You all are GENIUSES! Thanks for another great visit!”

Join in the fun as you never know what music will be playing or who will be leading the Closing Conga Line!

FALL CULTURAL PROGRAMMING ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY CONVERSATION AND COLLABORATION During Native American Heritage Celebration events, parents begin remembering celebrations from their youth which lead to refl ections on continuity and changes within cultures. Preservation is not only artifacts but also the cultural festivals, experiences, demonstrations and stories that explain a people and a time.

Cultural performances and dances will take place throughout the month of November in Fantasy Festival, and art activities will be off ered in Young at Art and Art Zone within Toddler Town. Each program will include visual demonstrations, cultural performances and associated art activities.

Each program off ered is designed to enhance wonder and understanding through multicultural awareness and to create dialogue within the Las Vegas community:

Native American Heritage Celebration – The Native American Heritage Celebration

will include activities that introduce children to the unique cultural traditions and history of America’s indigenous population and include Native American art experiences and performances, both facilitated and demonstrated by members of the Paiute Tribe. Art experiences will incorporate lessons in Native American history while encouraging children to create their own artwork. Performances will include traditional costume, dance and song.Saturday, November 2nd – Performance by young members of the Paiute Tribe.

Uncovering the Mysteries of Nevada’s Ancient Peoples – These event will expose children and families to the worlds of the ancient people who called Nevada home thousands of years ago. Museum visitors will learn and begin to understand these cultures through art activities, demonstrations and displays. Facilitators include Nevada Rock Art Foundation who use the clues left in the remains of rocks

and artifacts from abandoned villages and monuments and Red Rock Interpretive Association who share the mysteries found within the geology of the area. Children and families also will learn about the fi elds of archeology and geology.Saturday, November 9th – Nevada Rock Art Association

Saturday, November 16th – Red Rock Interpretive Association

Through each experience, visitors will better understand the historical signifi cance of a diverse array of cultural practices and build an appreciation for the ways in which each contributes to American culture today as well as American and specifi cally Nevada culture in the past.

Funded in part through Nevada Humanities Foundation

ECO CITYDesigned for visitors ages four to nine plus adults, Eco City is a metropolitan and environmentally friendly, kid-sized city fi lled with familiar buildings and businesses.

Laid out along a boulevard, Eco City is all about how people live and work together in their community. Visitors experience and operate the city as interconnected systems.

Key activities, such as earning a living – depositing and withdrawing money from the bank and buying groceries link businesses citywide and enable visitors to experience real-life scenarios. The city’s Wind Turbine is the iconic symbol of Eco City and supports the foundation of daily living activities like building a green and eco-friendly home or evaluating your carbon footprint as you decide travel plans at the airport.

Throughout Eco City, visitors have multiple opportunities to learn about green living and make choices that they, or their caregivers, make in the real world.

The magic of all things Nutcracker will be felt this December as we collaborate with Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT). Families will learn about The Nutcracker

through specially planned programming throughout the museum (see Programming Calendar) including becoming a nutcracker mechanic exploring all of its moving pieces to fi gure out how it works to constructing your very own cast of Nutcracker puppets.

Look for special appearances – opportunities to meet Nutcracker characters and even march in a Nutcracker Closing Parade (instead of The Closing Conga Line). The museum will
