Tips for the Table

INTRODUCTION Showing hospitality is a personal skill that can be learned. It is making other people feel welcome and comfortable. Using appropriate manners and etiquette in any culture is part of being hospitable. It is important that young teens foster hospitality in their personal family as well as in public settings. Teens can further develop their social skills by using creativity and good judgments in planning and implementing a hospitable environment towards others.

OBJECTIVES 1. Investigate acceptable behaviors or etiquette in diverse cultures.2. Recognize ways hospitality can be fostered in your family and

1. Locate and view the video, Etiquette Hotline: Table Manners. Make at least 15 notes from the video.

2. Using your notes from the video write answers to the following questions in complete sentences. Title this activity #2.

a. You want to serve yourself from a dish. Should you use your own flatware or serving utensils? Give at least 2 reasons for your choice.

Tips for the table

Activity # 3

1. Signal to your teacher that you need to set a table.

2. Locate in the kitchen your dinnerware, flatware, and beverageware that you will need to set a cover (a place setting for one person) for your meal. Collect 1 plate, 1 knife, 1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 glass, 1 napkin, 1 placemat from the kitchen area.

3. Notify your teacher that you are ready to cook a simple meal while setting the table.

4. Set the cover for your meal. Have the teacher check your table setting.

5. Using your very best manners, eat your meal. Enjoy!

6. After you have completed the meal, wash your dishes and utensils. Dry them and put them back in the correct cabinet or drawer. Return the placemats back to where you got them unless they got dirty.

7. If time allows, locate and read the instructional pages of various napkin folds. Practice a couple of the folds using cloth napkins.

8. If necessary work on any unfinished work.

9. Clean up your module and make sure everything is returned to its proper location.

1. Locate the “Table Manners Case Studies” and “What Do You Do?” worksheets and answer the situations based on your knowledge of proper table manners.

2. Locate the Posttest and complete it according to the instructions.

3. Now is your time to be creative and inventive as you possibly can!a. Plan a “Brunch Party” for ten people. A brunch is usually served from 10:00

– 11:30 a.m.i. Step # 1 - Design and create an invitation for the party. This needs to

include dress/formality of the party. Also if RSVP is needed. ii. Step #2 – Theme of your party.

iii. Step #3 - Plan a three-course menu. (Appetizer, Main Meal,& Dessert) This is to include how each course is to be served.

iv. Step # 4 – Design and draw the table setting and seating plan. Include all dinnerware, stemware and flatware.

v. Step # 5 – Design and describe the color design. Make sure you include tablecloth, stemware, flowers, food, and any other items your party might require.

4. For enrichment, locate and complete the activity sheet Tipping. Answer on your own notebook paper.

5. Get out a piece of paper and place your name, class and folder number in the upper right

hand corner. Place your module name on the top line. Copy the following list, and then gather the assignments in that order. Place the list on top and staple the stack together. Paperclip your pre/post test answer sheet on top.
