Many of us know that Labor Day is the first Monday in
September and most of us get off work right? But what
else is Labor Day about? How do we celebrate it and
why? To fully understand and enjoy the Labor Day
celebration, we must first know where it came from and
why our nation celebrates it.
Labor Day derived from the plans of the Central Labor
Union in 1882 and was first celebrated in New York City
on September 5, 1882. Just a year later the second Labor
Day was held, and thus became a tradition. By 1885,
Labor Day was celebrated throughout the country in
many industrial centers with the idea that Labor Day is to
give “workingmen” a holiday.
Not to hard to understand right? So now that we do
understand it, what does Atchison do to celebrate it? How
do individuals in our community celebrate it? Are there
special sales offered during the Labor Day weekend?
We asked members of the community to tell us what they
do for the Labor Day weekend; unfortunately several
people stated that they had to work and weren’t able to
enjoy it. However, several people also stated that they
barbecued and went camping with family and friends.
Some took road trips while others went to Lake Perry to
camp. There were also several people who stated that
they didn’t really know what they had planned so they
waited to see what came up.
We had the opportunity to take photos at a barbecue at
Mike and Pam Andres pond where people came together
to celebrate. It was a very enjoyable time and everyone
had fun.
Being able to be together and enjoy ones company is
always a wonderful gift that we members of the
community need not forget. Just saying hi to a passerby
or giving a stranger a smile can help us grow and feel as
if we belong to a bigger society, so let’s try to treat
everyday as if it were a holiday weekend where all our
worries are forgotten and every minute counts!
Have you ever watched any home interior shows and thought “I want that in my house?” What
about visiting someone and seeing a fabulous fireplace and dreaming about it non-stop? Well we found the guys that can take those dreams and make it a reality!
Trimright, Inc. is a company founded by two brothers who decided they wanted to start their own trimming business to showcase their skills and perfections. And what a great idea it has become. Chris and Matt Paxton of Trimright, Inc. worked for previous employers trimming houses for a few years before deciding that they wanted to stop working for others and allow their minds and skills to reach their full potential, therefore, in May of 2006, Trimright was brought into existence. Since then, they have trimmed over an estimated total of 250 houses within a large area.
These houses spanned from the Atchison area into Johnson County, Overland Park, Gardner and Saint Joseph, Missouri. We had to know why they named their business Trimright and Matt said “My dad came up with the name, so that's what we used.” Simple, yet useful. They allowed us to look through many photos in their portfolio and we found that their style quality is extreme!
Trimright works hard to allow accurate and beautiful craftsman ship that showcase all their hard work and can do many different trimming things within a house. To start, they make high quality custom fireplace mantels that any owner would die for. These fireplace mantels can be simple or they can include developing an entertainment center within. They can be large or small or even two sided for views from two different rooms! While all of this seems exceptional lets not forget that fireplace mantels are not the only skill they have.
Trimright can also trim dining rooms, living rooms, master bedrooms and bathrooms, kitchens and custom bookcases. They also design beautiful staircases that you just have to walk up and down! Even if you want something that involves trimming but you don't want wood materials to be used, the Trimright guys are metal fabricators also, giving them the ability to provide fantastic metal spindles to be added to any staircase.
These two brothers have a knack for being able to think on the spot and see a design in front of them that would add elegance and sophistication to your home. While these guys seem like they have a lot to do, they make sure to give themselves time to relax. We asked Chris what he liked to do when he's not designing trim packages or cutting and nailing trim to a house and he told us “I like to stay home and spend time with my family. We like to take the kids outside and let them play for a couple of hours each night. When I'm not hanging with my kids though I like to go in my shop and work on classic and hot rod cars. I still use design aspects but in a completely different way. It allows me to design and do mechanics which my brother Matt and I both enjoy doing.”
If you want anything done to your home or even have questions call Trimright, they will be happy to speak with you. Trimright operates Monday through Friday, 7:00-4:30 and some Saturdays and Sundays. You can contact Trimright by calling 913-927- 5387, 913-367-1890, or by email at [email protected].
Many of us live in our homes for many
years, so while we are spending all this
time in the place that we call home, why
not call Trimright and allow them to
help you make your home everything
you ever wanted
What is Freecycle???
OFFER: Baby boy clothes. WANTED: Desk. TAKEN: Toys. Does this look familiar to you? Well if you are a Freecycle member, this will. The Freecycle Network (or as most call it Freecycle) is a website that was set up for two reasons: for people to reuse good items that other people have and to recycle these items and keep them out of wastelands. The Freecycle Network mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community. Freecycle is a Yahoo! Group that is ran by local Moderators by donating their time to organize, approve, deny and sort out any issues that may come along. Everything on Freecycle is 100% free. You can get on Freecycle and post something you no longer want, or you can post for something that you are looking for. Either way, any interactions between members through Freecycle is to be free, no money exchanged.
The Freecycle Network was founded back in May 2003 by Deron Beal and a local Non-profit organization that he worked for called Rise in Tucson, AZ. Rise worked with local businesses to promote Recycling awareness and recycling services. May 1, 2003 was when the first email was sent out. Why an e-mail? Well when Freecycle first started, they sent out mass e-mails to people who joined the list. But, Deron and Rise quickly found out that mass e-mails were not going to work.
After about a year of Freecycle being in operation, Rise decided to hand over the operation to Deron. This is when Deron changed over from the mass emails, to The Freecycle Network website. Once people were finding out about this website, other communities wanted to join in on the experience. Deron helped many other local communities start up their own Freecycle pages as well.
The Freecycle Network currently has over 120 countries with Freecycle groups, over 5,000 Freecycle groups, 2300 moderators and around 8,000,000 members, with members adding daily. The local Atchison Freecycle group has 3 moderators and currently 524 members. They recently hosted the 1st Annual Freecycle Free-4-All that was held at the Atchison Library. This event was where people could bring unwanted items there and also people could come get items they wanted. Everything was 100% FREE. They had 28 people donate items and around 85 people show. They were very happy with the numbers since it was the first time hosting it and also because some were not exactly sure what the event were about. If you would like to join Freecycle, go to freecycle.org and type in your town to get your local group.
What a miracle it must have been to be standing in the middle of a professional football field, listening to the cheering fans, waiting to get a chance to jump in and prove himself as a rookie. Number 46, Safety Justin Thornton, a kid from a small town, a gentle soul, and now a man, stepped out onto Heinz stadium August 14, 2010 as rookie ball player trying to prove he’s worth it.
Struggling much of his life but never letting it get to him, he has accomplished what so few of us have, to play in an NFL game, whether it be a preseason game or not, he suited up like it was the game of his life.
With record setting numbers at Central High School in Saint Joseph, MO and tie setting numbers at KU, Thornton, an Atchison native, has ventured into a career that many dream of.
“Walking out of the tunnel for my first game was amazing. Just to be out there warming up in an NFL uniform is a blessing itself” said Thornton. Black and yellow is a big change from the red and blue he wore at KU, bet nevertheless, at that time they were his colors, the colors he took pride in wearing.
Thornton signed as a free-agent with the Pittsburg Steelers and was guaranteed to play in three preseason games for the 2010 football season. All he had to do is perform his best and keep his leadership attitude. At his first preseason game he made a forced fumble and completed some tackles. He continued on to the next two games and
made some more tackles and assisted with others. He then made it past the August 31st cuts and was given the chance to play in the last preseason game where he continued to assist on tackles.
After given the chance to play for the Pittsburg Steelers 2010 preseason games, Thornton found himself being released from the team. “Right now I'm just thankful for the opportunity to go out and play these preseason games and get something on tape. I don't know what's about to happen next but I do know one thing, I am good enough to play in this league.”
Maybe he will find himself signing with another NFL team, maybe he will be part of a practice squad, or maybe he will return to Lawrence, Kansas where his opportunities are endless, but whatever he does he can say that he got the chance to stand on an NFL field and play his heart out for four grueling games.
Thornton is a young man who has strived to do his best and always excel at what he does. He grew up in this small town we all call home and when he’s playing for the league you can be sure he will remember to come back home. His strength and his faith help him to conquer his goals of becoming a superior role model for many young men and women, and allow him to be a part of something bigger than himself.
Good-Bye Atchison Hospital!!!!!
When driving up Second Street in Atchison, you will now see an empty space where the
Atchison Hospital used to be. After almost 100 years at being in that building, the
Atchison Hospital moved to their new location at the being of this year. Many people
were sad to see the hospital go as they shared a lot of memories, good and bad, there. We
asked people on our Explore Atchison Facebook to share with us some of those
memories.
Mitzi Keller- It’s very sad seeing the hospital torn down...My parents are still living and
they were born there 82 years ago. I
had my daughter Ashley there 24 years
ago and my two grandchildren were
born there, Hunter and Hannah. I have
had a lot of surgeries in the old
hospital. There are a lot of memories...
Good and bad...But still sad. I worked
there as a CNA for 5 years until Cray
Manor closed
Janet Allen-My son was born their January of 1980
Billi Lawrence- I was born there in January of 1974!
Janet Allen- I went to the ER with my broken foot, very bad experience, the nurse was in
a bad mood and when she wheeled me into the room she ripped my thumbnail off.
RaeChelle Kuntz- I had 2 beautiful babies there 2005 and 2007, an awful gallbladder
surgery 2009 and many, many memories of sitting at a hospital bed holding the hand of a
loved one. I will miss the Old Hospital!!
Ann Young-As a little girl at Christmas we always had to go look at the Santa. I loved
that guy. I want to see him again this year!
Itsy Anderson- I was born there in 1963, and had my son there in 1982! And
unfortunately lost a few grandparents there...
Cierra Rygaard- I had my 1st daughter (Mylia) there and the nurse's were just so great.
It was so fun when they had me walk the stairs from the lower floor all the way to the top
to try and induce me. And then my youngest daughter was the 1st girl born at the new
hospital
Bonnie Richardson- I worked there 32
years, my 3 children were born there, five
of my grand kids were born there and my
only great grand daughter was born there.
I had many surgeries there, my husband
passed away there.
Michelle Evans- I have good memories
because I had my three beautiful children
there. Bad memories as I lost loved ones in
that building. I was sad to see it go.

Remembering
9/11
Do you remember where you where the morning of
September 11, 2001? Many of us do. That was the
morning that the whole county held their breath as
they heard news of the World Trade Centers. As the
first World Trade Center was on fire, the country
was wondering what had happened to cause a plane
to crash into the tower. Then minutes later we
witnessed a second plane hit the other tower. We
then started to learn that what we were witnessing
were terrorists events.
The northern World Trade Center was hit by a plane
causing it to catch on fire. People were being
evacuated in both World Trade Centers and
surrounding buildings. As citizens of New York
City and the whole country watched with many
questions, another plane came into view at 8:04 and
crashed into the southern World Trade Center.
At that point, all bridges and tunnels into New York
City were closed, and all airports were shut down
by the U.S. Government.
At 10:05 the northern World Trade Center went
down, followed by the southern World Trade Center
going down at 10:25. The crashes in New York City
had a death toll of 2,753.
At 8:45am, the next crash happened. A plan hit the
Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside
Washington, D.C. This crash caused a death toll of
184 people. The part of the Pentagon that was
crashed into had just been evacuated two weeks
prior to the crash due to renovation.
Another crash, the last of the four crashes, happened
in Shanksville, PA. The plane was heading for
Washington D.C. When passengers on the plane
found out of the intent of the hijackers, they tried
overtaking the plane. During the struggle to take
over, the plane went down. The forty passengers on
the plane were the only causalities in this crash.
This was a tragic day for the whole country,
especially for the families that lost loved ones
during the attacks. 9/11 is the worst terrorist event
in history in terms of how many people lost their
lives. Please remember everyone who lost their
lives this September 11 and the families who are
still suffering.
