This year an unprecedented number of local, national and international employers are travelling to Plymouth to meet you! They’re here to talk to as many students and graduates as possible and pass on their knowledge and experience of careers in their sector.

The programme is packed with employer talks, workshops in our Hub, a Q&A employer panel and a networking session after the fair. How about attending one of our workshops in the weeks before the fairs where you can learn how to approach an employer and what kind of questions you should be asking.

The answer to all of these is yes! Regardless of where you are with your career planning, coming to the fair means you can find out about routes from people already working in the sector and ask advice on being successful in job searching, applications and interviews.

MARTYN FLYNN TALENT ACQUISITION MANAGER, ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR

Martyn joined Enterprise Rent-a-car in 1997 on their Graduate Management Trainee program after graduating with a degree in Management Science. After successfully managing several branches across South Wales, Martyn made the move across to the HR fields of recruitment and training, and now oversees the recruitment process and the Management Training program across the South West. Martyn’s role involves working alongside universities to raise students’ employability skills and raise brand awareness, whilst also screening candidates, interviewing and running assessment centres.

HANNAH JOHNCLUSTER TRAINING MANAGER SOUTH WEST, HILTON WORLDWIDE

Hannah worked in the hospitality industry for 13 years starting off as a trainee receptionist, then moving to Hilton 8 years ago as an Assistant Front Office Manager, within 2 years becoming the Front Office Manager. Hilton then gave Hannah the opportunity to take a side step into Training and development, and this has been her role for 2 years ensuring the team have the right skills to achieve results, business goals and develop talent from within.



BREAKING INTO BUSINESS: NETWORKING

JOSH LINTERNGRADUATE BUSINESS CONSULTANT, IBM

Josh is a Plymouth University Graduate who studied Law LLB (hons) and graduated in 2012. He went on to work in Commercial Litigation for Bond Dickinson, working with a range of FTSE 350 companies on both Claimant and Defendant type work. After deciding his interests were more compatible with the business world, rather than the commercial legal sector, Josh went on to work for the Direct Line Group before joining the IBM Graduate Scheme in 2013. Josh now works for IBM as a Graduate Business Consultant.

SCARLETT SEAGERWEST AND WALES STUDENT RECRUITMENT MANAGER, PwC

Scarlett studied International Management & French at the University of Bath, and spent her placement year in Montreal. After graduating in 2009, Scarlett was fortunate enough to be elected to act as a Sabbatical Officer at the University of Bath’s students union, representing the student body on welfare and diversity issues. Following this, she spent two years working as a recruitment consultant, before joining PwC in the Student Recruitment team.

3:30PM - 4:30PM This networking event will take place in the Careers & Employability Hub where you will be given an opportunity to meet the employers in a more informal setting over refreshments. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of their company and recruitment processes as well as practise your networking skills. We’ll be setting the questions for the employers to answer in a group setting for the first 30 minutes and for the second half you’ll be free to chat to the employers of your choice! This is a fantastic opportunity to increase your confidence in a safe environment and practise talking to employers in a professional way.


HOW DO I PREPAREFOR THE FAIR?

Research the organisations who are attending by visiting their websites and see if they have a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn page you can follow. This will help you to ask appropriate questions on the day.

Prepare the questions that you want to ask, so that you don’t end up wandering around the stands only picking up freebies. Aim to be remembered as the person who asked interesting and engaging questions!

Think outside the box. Don’t just consider the obvious options, the more open minded you are, the more opportunities you will discover.

• Consider the type of work that interests you as well as your skills and experience to date. Employers may ask what you want out of a placement or graduate job and what you could bring to a role.

• Know your digital footprint! What do you find when you Google your name? Are you happy for employers to see your Facebook photos? Are your tweets appropriate? Is your LinkedIn profile current and professional? Employers increasingly check candidates’ online presence so it is good to be confident in yours!

HOW DO I MAKE AN IMPRESSION ON THE DAY?

Although fairs are less formal than interviews, the organisations will still be on the lookout for potential candidates:

• Dress smartly; you never get a second chance to make a first impression!

• Take copies of a CV which you can leave with employers. This will show you are professional and prepared. Make sure it’s a good one by visiting our drop-ins or workshops first.

• Take a notepad to write notes as you talk to exhibitors. After an hour of different conversations it’s sometimes difficult to remember the points they made, the resources they recommended and who invited you to make contact afterwards.

• If someone gives you their business card and invites you to call them for a further meeting, follow it up! It may open doors to work experience or mentoring. If you’re not sure how to approach them after the fair, pop in and talk to our team in the Careers & Employability Hub.

WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK?Your questions should depend on what’s appropriate to the employer, the research you have done and what you want to get out of your discussion with them. Everyone’s questions will therefore be different but here are a few examples to get you started:• What particular skills are you looking for? • What’s the best thing about working for this company? • What type of person fits in with your company? • What is your normal selection process? How many stages are there (Such as assessment centres, interviews, tests)? • What motivated you to work for this company?

PLACEMENT EXAMPLES:

• Does your organisation recruit placement students? • What experience would make a placement application stand out? • Is placement experience valued in a graduate application?

GRADUATE EXAMPLES:

• What training opportunities are available? • How many graduates are recruited each year? • What’s happened to the graduates you recruited last year? What are they doing now?
