With more than 1,600 students enrolled, the Honors program is entering its 39th year. A record number of freshman students were accepted in Fall 2010, with more than 18 percent of the class scoring 30 or higher on the ACT.
The program includes enriched Honors courses, interdisciplinary seminars, independent study, an Honors thesis or creative project, and conversations with visiting scholars. Honors courses are discussion-based classes that emphasize writing and problem solving, as well as critical and creative
thinking. Honors students can also participate in nationally recognized undergraduate research conferences and extend their learning through internships and public service.
In the last several years, U of M Honors students have won such highly prestigious scholarships as the Truman Scholarship, the Goldwater Scholarship, the Fulbright Scholarship and the Rotary Scholarship, among others.
More information is available at memphis.edu/honors.
For academically ambitious and talented students, the Helen Hardin Honors Program combines the best of a small liberal arts school with the opportunities of a large, nationally recognized research university.

The University of Memphis offers two programs that bring undergraduate students together who have common academic pursuits. The U of M’s Living Learning Communities program allows students to not only attend class and study together, but to live together as well. Living Learning Communities are available for Honors students, women majoring in engineering, ROTC students, those majoring in architecture and design, music scholars, Emerging Leaders, those
interested in foreign languages and cultures, and a Freshmen First group. A new Living Learning Residence Complex opened in Fall 2010.
Freshmen First participants live together and share their experiences as freshmen. Residence Life provides a variety of programs to help these students succeed, including study skills, movie nights, cookouts, recreational tournaments, community service projects, safety awareness and more.
Research confirms that Living Learning Community students become more engaged in their studies and their college lives, have higher GPAs, successfully complete more hours in less time, and continue on their programs of study at a higher rate.

ResearchBoth undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to participate in research projects. Undergraduates do so through their participation in the Helen Hardin Honors Program.
An undergraduate research database exists online to match students and their interests with researchers in all fields at the U of M. These opportunities to work with faculty on key research projects give students invaluable experience and allow them to participate in a “real world” application of their knowledge.
Some current areas of research that undergraduate students participate in include: biology, chemistry, communication, psychology, counseling, educational psychology and research,
earth sciences, electrical and computer engineering, health and sport
sciences, political science, and women’s and children’s health.
Graduate students become involved with

I chose the U of M because it had the academic program that I liked. But once I got to Memphis, I was able to express myself through many on-campus activities — including serving as my Greek sorority’s president.

Creative expression comes naturally to many of us. Whether it’s music, art, design, theatre, dance or writing that is your pursuit, the University of Memphis has a program that can spark your imagination and help you realize your potential.

Creative and Professional WritingIf writing is your preferred form of expression, then you’ll want to enroll in either the creative or professional writing programs offered through the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to the bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in creative writing, the university also offers a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. Professional writing degrees are also offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The U of M faculty include many published authors.
Visual and Performing ArtsThe visual and performing arts disciplines are found within our College of Communication and Fine Arts (CCFA). These include studies through our Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and the departments of architecture, art, communication and journalism, as well as theatre and dance.
Many of our alumni have made their way to national and international stages after graduation as actors, opera singers, filmmakers, music producers, costume designers and directors. Others have become best-selling authors, speechwriters, journalists and editors, playwrights, designers, artists and art historians. CCFA offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of concentrations, such as music and theatre performance, jazz and studio music composition, music and art education, studio arts, photography, art history, architecture and interior design, graphic design, journalism, and film and video production.
Our natural sciences and social sciences

should consider the Loewenberg School of
Nursing. Our nursing students are engaged
with the community daily and assist with such
initiatives as hospice care, health fairs and
screenings, adult day care and CPR classes. We
are also actively involved with organizations
like the American Red Cross and the Memphis

students travel to the Dominican Republic to
provide basic healthcare services to one of the
most impoverished countries in the world.
Engineering programs, housed in the
Herff College of Engineering, include
studies in biomedical, civil, computer,
electrical and mechanical engineering. At
the graduate level, our School of Public

Student life is an important part of the college experience. Research shows that students who are involved in campus life are more inclined to excel academically and to maintain a greater connection to their university after graduation. Approximately 2,100 students live in on-campus housing at the U of M.
Greek Life is a vibrant part of the university and includes 25 sororities and fraternities. Intramural sports, concerts, movie showings, speakers and other student activities give students outlets to be involved in campus life.

Leadership comes in many different forms. At the U of M, we have more than 190 registered student organizations (RSOs). There is literally something for everyone. If we don’t have an organization that suits your interests, you can start a new one by getting nine more of your friends to sign up.
Whether you’re looking for a group that supports athletics or the arts, community service or cultural awareness, religious or political activism, Greek life or academic scholarship, there’s an RSO for you. There is also the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Council and the Student Ambassador Board.

Your college life is part of a greater whole. Not only will you study, eat and perhaps live on our campus, you will also become part of our city.
Memphis is known for a lot of things. You may have heard about our barbecue, our musical heritage, our civil rights history and our entrepreneurial spirit. A lot of companies got their start in Memphis — FedEx, Holiday Inn and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, just to name a few.
We also gave birth to the first self-service grocery store, the first hotel chain, the first outlet mall and the first overnight package delivery company.
Our city embodies our university’s motto — Dreamers. Thinkers. Doers. It is more than our motto. It is who we are as a university, and as a city.
When you graduate and become an alumnus, you will join a group of pretty phenomenal people — one that includes actors, scientists, educators, corporate executives, lawyers, politicians, authors, physicians and entrepreneurs who are leaders in their respective fields.
The U of M has more than 118,000 living alumni, many of whom play a vital role in our success through philanthropy, volunteer participation, student recruitment and athletic support.

by your career choice
Nothing expresses who you are more than your choice of a career. You may have multiple roles in your lifetime (child, spouse, parent, friend), but the world will label you by your chosen career (doctor, teacher, banker, lawyer, engineer, business owner, artist). Your chosen career will define a large part of your life, reflecting your passion and your ambition.
At the U of M, we recognize how important career choices are. It starts with the advising process as an incoming freshman and continues through your college career. Our Career Services office offers individual career planning, resumé critiquing, mock interviewing, and internship and job search preparation. We also have strong partnerships within the university community, the city and the region. The U of M even offers guaranteed internships to upper division students.
