I started coming to Calvary when my neighbors, the Hogues and Hope and Julian Smith, began telling my brothers and me about their church. We went to see what Calvary looked like and what it felt like to be there. I came and I saw how much love they showed for us- my brothers and me- and I thought this was a good place to be.

That summer I went to Children’s Bible Club on Ethel Avenue. I remember Isaac Bradley and his family was there, and lots of the new friends I had made at church. It was so awesome- we had water balloon wars. We had a time where we worshipped, and we had a lot of fun, too.

Calvary changed me. I really didn’t know who God was when I first came to church. Lots of people showed me God’s love, like the Hoffmans, who gave us rides to church and came to pick us up to hang out at their house. It’s also been good having friends at school from Calvary.

I remember how the Tuckers taught me each week in Sunday School, and I began learning more about who Jesus was.

When I saw Shamarien get baptized earlier this year, it was a moment where I was like- he’s taken his faith to the next level.

I thought about my faith a lot at camp this summer. I learned about how God chases after us and about how God wants us to go out of bounds, and out of our comfort zones. I knew I was ready to take that next step.

Getting baptized today means that God has washed my sins away. I will start to change into who God wants me to be. I know that Jesus will always love me, no matter how hard it is to follow him. I am glad to be a part of Calvary’s community now that I’m being baptized today, I am thankful that Calvary has helped me to learn a little more about God.

When I say Men’s Ministry and mention pancakes and barbecue do you think of…Man food!...for men!...to eat in manly ways!?

Ok that’s a bit over the top. And those sentiments really don’t define Calvary’s Men’s Ministry. But we do like pancakes; we do like barbecue. And we like the fellowship that comes when gathering to eat those flat circles of tasty dough and charred meat. And we like to share prayer requests with each other. And we like to talk about Baylor sports. And we like to encourage and support one another. And we like to develop these friendships over a meal.

Our Men’s Group gathers twice a month. We meet on the 2nd Monday of each month (November 11 this month) from 6:45 – 7:45am at the International House of Pancakes near Baylor. As we eat pancakes, or other IHOP delicacies, we have a short devotion, share prayer concerns and spend some time with God in prayer. Our devotions have centered upon friendship, particularly as exemplified by David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel.

The breakfast hour is not convenient for everyone. So our Men’s Group also meets for lunch every fourth Monday, 12:15 – 1:15pm. We are making the barbecue rounds in Waco, having gathered at Uncle Dan’s in October.

We’ll meet at Vitek’s on November 25 and Michna’s on December 23. This group is more oriented to fellowship. While we do share prayer concerns and check in with one another, we spend most of the hour just

chatting and enjoying conversation.

We are sons, brothers, husbands, dads, grandfathers, and uncles. In those—often

multiple—roles, we face pressures of life that can isolate and segregate. Our Men’s group breakfasts and lunches seek to provide fraternal community for disciples of Jesus Christ. It’s low-key and faithful. It’s informal and uplifting. And we eat pancakes and barbecue.

All Calvary men and their friends are welcome to join us.
