Prospective Parent Meeting & Tour
VISION UPDATE Last Monday a second evening workshop was
facilitated by Marie Sakotic. The workshop involved members of the
School Council, a selection of parents representing the various
year levels and diverse needs of children, and staff members
employed in different roles at the school.
The workshop commenced with an overview of the data collected
and the key themes that emerged during the first phase of the
vision process. The participants then began developing an
aspirational, concise and compelling vision statement with a
mission statement that expanded and clarified its intent. It was a
very successful evening which will now be followed by the School
Council refining the statements and developing the core values
identified throughout this process.
The Vision will be launched at the school assembly on Wednesday
10 December at 8.55am in the undercover area.
OPEN MEETING: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY Thank you to everyone
who completed the Religious Education Policy survey last month.
There will be an ‘Open Meeting’ of the working party at 9.00am on
Friday 14 November to share the results and responses. This is an
opportunity to clarify the difference between General Religious
Education (GRE) and Special Religious Education (SRE), ask
questions regarding aspects of the policy and to contribute further
to the development of school policy. Please register your

THE ANGOVE STREET FESTIVAL The Angove Street Festival last
Sunday was an outstanding community event that attracted many of
our school families, local residents and visitors from surrounding
areas. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our music program
with uplifting performances by both our choirs and a solo
performance by Sofie K. Congratulations to the students for singing
with such joy and putting a smile on so many faces. Thank you to
the staff who helped organise this event and attended on the
day.

Violin Recital
It was wonderful to see so many parents and
grandparents supporting our young violinists at the
recital last week. Thank you to Ms Ramakrishnan and
Ms Downsborough for organising this musical event to
showcase the development of the students skills.
Cupcakes for Cancer I would like to say a huge thankyou to
everyone who kindly supported our community fundraising event last
Thursday, by purchasing a beautifully decorated cupcake for morning
tea. With thanks also to the very hardworking Student Councillors,
and their Year 6/7 volunteers, we managed to ice and decorate over
450 cupcakes in just two short hours. As a result of this amazing
effort we have donated $490.45 to the fundraising organisation,
Cupcakes for Cancer, who support young cancer patients through
funding research and support programs.

REMEMBRANCE DAY As a means of supporting the
RSL (Returned and Services
League) a community
committee will be making
poppies available to our
students for Remembrance
Day this year. Although all
students will receive a poppy they are also being
encouraged to donate a gold coin to support the
RSL on this day of remembrance.

On Monday 20 October Scitech held its first annual Schools’
Science
Challenge at Scitech, with students from Western Australian
schools
competing in a day of fun Science related activities.
Congratulations to Callum G, Amberley M, James M, Ethan W, Luna
J,
Eli O, Leo R and Depeche O on being selected to represent our
school. They
were excellent ambassadors for our school. Each demonstrated
excellent
team work and problem-solving skills, especially when working on
The Crow and the Pitcher challenge.
TREES REMOVED Recently we noticed that four trees had died—two
on the oval and two in the front courtyard of the school. They have
been removed for safety reasons. The mulch from the trees has been
placed near the north end of the carpark and the school’s part-time
gardener is planning to spread this throughout the grounds over the
next few weeks. Please contact the school if you are able to assist
with this task. Thank you.
SCHOOL WATCH It is unfortunate that the school continues to have
unwelcome visitors damaging school property, doing graffiti,
smashing bottles and leaving rubbish throughout the school which
includes cigarette butts, alcohol containers, drug paraphernalia
and take-away food packaging. This misuse of the school site is
costly in terms of time to report (Education Security, Police,
repair contractor), clean-up and repair.
We desperately need the support of our school community to help
protect our school.
What to look for?
The most important times for you to be vigilant are during
weekends and school holidays as the school is unattended and
therefore more vulnerable than usual to crime.
Keep in mind that our school site is large with multiple "blind
spots". If you hear unusual noises from within the school, such as
glass breaking or banging noises, this might mean people are up to
no good.
Watch for groups "hanging around" on school grounds. This should
not occur and can be one of the starting points for crime to
occur.

PRIMARY EXTENSION AND CHALLENGE
YEAR 4 STUDENT ASSESSMENT AND IDENTIFICATION
Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) offers a supplementary
program for gifted and talented students and provides them with the
opportunity to extend, challenge and develop their thinking
skills.
State-wide testing of Year 4 students for the PEAC program in
Years 5 and 6 has been conducted. North Perth Primary School
students were tested in June. This year 19 356 Year 4 students
across Western Australia completed the test.
Student assessment and identification for selection to PEAC
included a test of non-verbal reasoning ability and a test designed
to measure language and reasoning abilities. The raw scores for
each test were converted to percentiles using the student’s
chronological age at the date of the test.
Parents of students identified as eligible for participation in
a part-time PEAC program have been advised that their child will be
given the opportunity to nominate for program courses.

for this program to our Learning Support Coordinator, Lisa

SAFE TO SCHOOL There have been a few incidents reported in the
media
recently that are a reminder for us to regularly remind
our children about how to stay safe while walking to and
from school.
The following suggestions distributed by the North
Metropolitan Education Regional Office may be helpful.
Always travel in company.
Walk on the footpath on the right side of the road so
you face oncoming traffic.
Wherever possible, leave space between you and the
roadway.
Stay in areas that are well lit.
Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden
from view (such as parkland bush, or behind shopping
centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations.
Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your
awareness considerably.
If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and
ready to dial an emergency number.
If a passing car stops nearby, never get too close.
Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you
feel at risk.
Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and
the police (call 000 in an emergency or 1800 333 000
to reach Crime Stoppers), noting number plates of
cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features of
individuals.
CANTEEN NEWS The NEW summer menu is proving to be very
popular, especially our sausage sizzle option on
Fridays. We are still in need of volunteers for

NAMING THE MANNEQUIN At the end of last term the students voted
for their
preferred name for the Uniform Shop mannequin. The
winning name with 134 votes, almost twice as many as
the next preferred name, is
BIBBLEBOB.
Congratulations to Soren C and Allegra C who will be
presented with a small prize for nominating the winning
name at the next assembly.
Help wanted: We need castors attached to the
mannequin’s stand so it is easier to move to display.

OPEN NIGHT FOOD The School and P & C is looking for a group
of parents to look into and organise dinner options for the Schools
up and coming Open Night on Friday 12 December. Canteen will be
selling juices and icypoles on the night and in previous years we
have had a pre-ordered pizza and currys, as well as simply running
a sausage sizzle that families can access. Can you help us? Please

MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEON The P&C with the NP Bowling Club are
hosting their annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon again next Tuesday.
Tickets are $25/ person for lunch and a complimentary drink at the
bar. Lots of door prizes to be won, fashions on the field and
sweepstakes on the BIG race. All parents, carers and friends are
welcome and we would love to see you there. Tickets are being sold

PROPOSED 2015 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS School Development Days
are important student free days which provide staff the opportunity
to participate in
school planning and professional learning activities. In the
past these days have been scheduled at the
beginning of each term and at the end of the year. Schools have
some flexibility in how the days are allocated.
There are two days that are mandated and may not be changed i.e.
Thursday 29 January and Friday 30 January
2015. There is also a day allocated after the school year
concludes for students which may be reallocated for
staff after-hours planning and development activities. The
remaining three days are flexible.
During the year the administration of several local schools
discussed this issue, including the predictability of
retaining days at the beginning of the terms and the advantages
of local schools having the same days e.g. joint
school professional learning, families with children attending
more than one school.
The School Council has endorsed the following timetable of
School Development Days for 2015:
Term 1: Thursday 29 January and Friday 30 January 2015
Term 2: Monday 20 April 2015
Term 3: Monday 20 July 2015
Term 4: Monday 12 October and Friday 18 December 2015

Angove Street Festival
On Sunday, 26 October 2014, the school hosted a "mini fete"
attached to the Angove Street Festival. A dedicated team of
organisers
set up a cake stall, a book stall, a white elephant stall, a
children's clothing stall, 2 inflatables, a pet rock stall, a
lob-a-choc stall, a
temporary tattoo and coloured hair stencilling stall, a lemonade
stall, lucky dips, guess the numbers of lollies and gumballs in the
jar
and a sausage sizzle. We also created a free box construction
zone, set up a massive inflatable dinosaur and hosted Raine &
Horne
with their massive and free climbing wall, the Sikh Association
of Western Australia with their free Turbans and Trust initiative
and
the Fumi Sushi stall, suppliers of quality, tasty sushi to the
school's canteen. We also set up a special tent showcasing our
crowd
funding video on www.Chuffed.org and had volunteers manning the
stall to answer questions and shake a tin for small change
donations. The hard work of everyone who organised, collected,
donated, manned stall, tidied, packed up and attended on the day
to
support the stalls raised a net profit to the P&C of around
$11,500.
Our school oval looked vibrant and exciting and our beautiful
school was showcased as the lovely, calm and special place we
all
know it to be. The huge sense of community created by these
types of events is the biggest bonus of any fete or festival and
the
organisers felt so proud of our community for turning out in
droves to support our efforts. This would not have been
possible
without the tireless efforts of all the school family helpers
before the event and on the day. A big thank you to everyone for
their
contributions in the lead up, on the day and for those who
attended the event and supported the stalls and activities. We'd
like to
give a special mention to our Principal, Miss Lockyer for
opening the school up at 6.45am on the Sunday and helping to haul
boxes,
tables and all manner of items about the oval and to our sports
specialist, Mr Helfand, for clearing his sports shed to give us
storage
and for taping boxes on the box construction zone for 2 hours on
the Sunday morning.
Crowd Funding
As we hope that you would all know by now, the North Perth
Primary School P&C, with the support of North Perth Primary
School, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on www.chuffed.org.

climb-dome We are aiming to raise $40,00 toward the cost of
installing an Explorer Dome onto the school oval in place of
the
current monkey bars and flying fox. (Don't worry, those pieces
of equipment are being spruced up relocated, not thrown out).

days into the campaign, we have already raised $15,238.20
towards our $40,000 total. You can help by sharing the chuffed link

We’ve had a busy year here in Room 12 and it’s not over yet! We
have lots more exciting
things planned for the remainder of the term. Here are just some
of the exciting things we
have done so far, and a little taste of what’s we’ve been doing
so far this term and what’s to
come!
ANZAC Day
In Term 1 Mr Chris Parry (A.K.A Matilda’s Dad) came to our
class. We learned about the Sandakan to Ranau Death March. Some
other students in the class and I got to carry big bags of rice. It
was really exciting but also a lot of hard work. It gave us a bit
of a taste about what the prisoners had to do for ages!!

Assembly
In Term 3 our class had our assembly. We recited the famous poem
by Banjo Paterson, Mulga Bills Bicycle. To prepare, we learnt all
about Readers Theatre which teaches you how to create a scene using
your voice, facial expressions and simple actions. Readers Theatre
also helped us become more confident speaking to an audience and
performing.
India
Scitech Excursion
On 3 September 2014, Room 1 and Room 12 went to Scitech. We
watched “We Are Aliens” in the Planetarium and went to the Slime
and You show. Here we saw someone make goo. We named it Bob. There
was also the Carnival of Science exhibition, which I think everyone
enjoyed. There were many exhibits involving computers, magnets,
quick thinking and common sense. We all had a great day!

What Has and Is Happening
In Term 3, our class was learning about fairy tales. The fairy
tales included Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Princess and the
Pea, Cinderella and many more. We made Fairy Tale Newspapers. It
was lots of fun. This term we are doing our own Amazing Race, as
seen on TV, and are learning about different countries. We have to
complete set activities to do with the country we are learning
about. Note: we don’t really go to the countries!
