Term 2 has been another busy term with many fun and challenging learning activities
and opportunities for parents to be involved in their child’s education. Thank you to
parents and staff members for working together to improve student outcomes and
our school.
Term 2 concludes for students and staff members on Friday 4 July.
Term 3 commences for students on WEDNESDAY 23 JULY 2014.
It is important for all parents to note that the first school day for students is a Wednesday. The school will be closed on Tuesday 22 July while staff attend professional learning at Mount Lawley Senior High School.
Best wishes to everyone for a well-deserved holiday break filled with many
opportunities to relax and catch up with family and friends.
MUSIC ASSEMBLY
The final assembly for Term 2 will be held on Wednesday 2 July with performances
by the school choir, ensemble and brass students.
LOST PROPERTY
We have an abundance of jumpers, hats, lunch boxes and drink bottles in our lost
property basket near Room 1. Next week we will be checking the items and returning
those that are labelled to their owners. Unfortunately, based on previous
experience, many of the items will not be labelled and will be donated to the Uniform
Shop or placed in a charity bin.
Please encourage your child to have a look at the items and claim anything that
belongs to them. Parents are also welcome to check the lost property basket.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS—FORMER
STUDENTS
It is always interesting to hear about the
achievements and activities of former students and
recently I received an email providing an update on
five of them. Congratulations and best wishes to
the following students on their achievements.
Monroe M travelled to Thailand during the last
holidays with the Quiet Leon Tour group to
participate in the Anzac Day services at Hell
Fire Pass and Kanchanaburi.
Class of 2010 students Ciaran F, James D and
Felix C are all heading to Cambodia for a two
week period during the upcoming holidays where
they will be working at two village schools—
including setting up a new school. They will also
be travelling around Cambodia to the Killing
Fields and Angkor Wat with children from the
village of Little Po.
Samuel P-P has been selected as the Captain of
the State 16’s Australian Rules team and will be
travelling to the Gold Coast to compete in the
AFL NAB 16s Competition in July.
Please do not hesitate to forward information
about the successes of our former students so we
may proudly share it with our school community.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Western Australian public schools provide a secular education to students from different cultural
backgrounds and faiths. It is important to ensure that, as part of the general curriculum, the background and
beliefs of all students are respected by not promoting any particular religion.
School Councils are required by the Department of Education to develop a Religious Education Policy which
addresses the provision of General Religious Education (GRE) and Special Religious Education (SRE) and the
granting of exemptions from SRE and any school activity which involves prayers, songs or other material
based on religious, spiritual or moral values.
General Religious Education (GRE) is the sociological study of the major forms of religious thought and
expression characteristic of Australian society and other societies. It is provided in public schools by
classroom teachers as part of the general school curriculum. GRE does not encourage personal commitment by
students to a particular set of religious beliefs.
Special Religious Education (SRE) is based on distinctive religious tenets or beliefs and may be provided in
public schools by persons authorised to deliver SRE.
School Council is seeking the views of parents as we develop our policy. Before the end of term you will
receive an email with a link to an online survey. We hope that all parents will complete the survey so that we
may develop a policy that reflects the views of the school community.

CHILDREN—CYCLIST SAFETY
Most cycling injuries occur on public roads and don’t
involve another vehicle, but occur when children fall
off their bikes.
The figures for cyclist deaths in Western Australia
vary, but the overall pattern is one in which, on
average, roughly 40% of the people who died were
aged under 20.
For young cyclists, a footpath or shared path is the
best place to ride. It is legal for children under 12 to
ride on the footpath, but it is important to be aware
that driveways are dangerous. Children under the age
of 10 should ride under the supervision of adults.
Everyone must wear approved cycling helmets that
meet Australian standards and fit correctly at all
times while riding. Head injuries are the main cause of
death and disability for cyclists. The wearing of
helmets significantly decreases the chances of serious
injury in the event of crashes, so it is important that
you ensure your children wear a helmet at all times
whilst cycling, rollerblading or skateboarding.

FIRST AID FOCUS TRAINING
SAFE TO SCHOOL
It is recommended all parents talk regularly with
their children about how to stay safe while walking to
and from school. The following suggestions
distributed by the North Metropolitan Education
Regional Office may be helpful.
Always travel in company
Walk on the footpath on the right side of the
road so you face oncoming traffic
Wherever possible, leave space between you and
the roadway
Stay in areas that are well lit
Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are
hidden from view (such as parkland bush, or
behind shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid
such locations
Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce
your awareness considerably
If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and
ready to dial an emergency number
If a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which
you feel at risk
Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and
the police (call 000 in an emergency or 1800 333
000 to reach Crime Stoppers), noting number
plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing
features of individuals.
IMPETIGO – SCHOOL SORES
Impetigo is a common, acute bacterial
infection of the skin caused by
staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria.
It usually starts with a blister, or group
of blisters, which bursts and leaves a patch of skin which
weeps before developing a yellowish crust. They can be
found anywhere on the body. It is important for your
child to see a doctor if you suspect they have impetigo.
The following information regarding this skin condition is
from the Department of Health’s publication
Communicable Disease Guidelines.
Transmission: Direct contact with skin lesions.
Incubation period: Usually 4 to 10 days
Infectious period: As long as there is discharge
from untreated lesions
Exclusion: Exclude (from school) for 24
hours after antibiotic treatment
commenced. Lesions on exposed
skin surfaces should be covered
with a waterproof dressing.
Treatment: Antibiotic treatment available —
refer to doctor.
Contacts: Not excluded from school.
Immunisation: None available.
A brochure regarding this skin infection is available from
the school reception.

REPLENISHING CONSUMABLES
Parents are asked to check with their
child to see which consumables (e.g.
glue, pencils) need
to be restocked
for Term 3. Thank
you for your
assistance in this
matter.
School Banking Day - Beat the queue! Don’t forget that Wednesday is School Banking day and you can do your banking any time after 8.15 and before 8.45. Due to the fantastic uptake of the program at our school we can get very busy as most children arrive at school at 8.30. So if you want to do school banking, arrive a bit early and beat the queue! Also parents must make sure that the children complete the deposit slip with the child’s name, student number, branch, account number, date and amount being deposited, before presenting to a teller.
If you haven’t opened an account and still wish to do so, see commbank.com.au/schoolbanking for details or speak to one of our friendly co-ordinators. Remember, our school earns 5% commission on every deposit made (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at North Perth Primary School.

Kindy Room 18 Class News
Our Jolly Phonics program has been a big focus of our learning throughout the semester and students are engaged with the multi-sensory activities for each letter sound.
We love learning through play, particularly when discovering new mathematical concepts, such as weight, length and different ways to sort objects.
Term 2 has been a busy and exciting term. We have participated in a cultural exchange project with schools across Australia and have enjoyed learning about our place of belonging. We love having parent helpers in our class, doing activities and watching students discover and learn.
Students have enjoyed learning about themselves. We have done several activities focusing on our being, such as self-portraits, tracing silhouettes to measure height and talking about what makes us happy.
