SCAM MAIL – MESSAGE FROM THE ROYAL MAIL

Like telephone, email and online scams, there are a few different types of

scams that can be sent in the post. Sometimes they are tricky to spot.

We want to help you look out for scam mail, and explain how you can

avoid falling victim to it.

What is scam mail?

Scam mail can take the form of fake lotteries and prize draws, get-rich-quick schemes, bogus health cures, investment scams and pyramid schemes. Sometimes these can be sent to you if a scammer has got hold of your contact details fraudulently.

It’s worth noting there’s a difference between scam mail and legitimate mail sent by companies to promote lawful services or genuine goods. Scam mail is sent for the sole intention of obtaining money through deception and/or fraud. We want to know about potentially fraudulent mail. We can then work with the relevant authorities who can investigate and take action.

What to do if you think you’ve received scam mail

If you think you or a family member is receiving scam mail, please complete our Scam Mail Report and send it to:

FREEPOST SCAM MAIL

Or you can email: [email protected], or phone: 0800 0113466 (message service only)

Please include any items of mail you’ve received that you believe were sent by fraudsters. This should include the original envelope it was sent in.

Other ways to report mail fraud

You can contact Citizens Advice consumer service by:

calling 03454 04 05 06

writing to Citizens Advice consumer service, 2nd Floor, Fairfax House,

Merrion Street, Leeds, LS2 8JU

or completing their online form

Action Fraud is an organisation run by the National Fraud Authority. This is a government agency, which provides information about various scams. It also has a 24-hour facility where you can get advice and report fraud.

Our commitment to you

You need to feel confident that your mail and personal information is safe with us. We take this responsibility very seriously. We’re determined to do all we can to help prevent scam mail entering the system.

We’re bound by the Universal Service Obligation and required by law to deliver all mail entrusted to us. However, with the help of our customers, we’re determined to do all we can to stop scam mail entering the postal system.

How you can help avoid scam mail

If you're moving home, Action Fraud recommends using a Redirection to reduce the risk of identity fraud. They recommend redirecting mail from your old address to your new address for at least a year.

If you hold power of attorney for somebody, you can apply for a Redirection on their behalf. You can do this if you believe they’re a victim, or are vulnerable to being a victim, of scam mail.

What to do about scam email

We reguarly update our list of known scam emails - check this page to help you spot scam emails.

If you receive a suspicious email or discover a Royal Mail branded website you believe to be fraudulent, please contact us.

Has anyone in Exton been in receipt of such mail? ….Ed

Well done Ed Heckels for an entertaining Friday evening

14th September in the Village Hall. There were 63 participants split between 13 teams and the variety of questions on each section caused some laughter and groans. Supported by Kiloren greeting all at the door everything was well organised with contestants taking their own drinks and nibbles. Sally Miller and Patricia Hagger were hot selling raffle tickets too. When the calculations were done two teams were top with 51 points! This was a state of affairs that had not been allowed for by the Quizmaster! So a tie was declared : Celebrating their win were the ‘No Hopers’ team of Patricia Hagger, Caroleen Falconer, Alan Morison-Reeve, Sally Miller and Mike Laughton and ‘The Also Rans’ – Barbara and Richard Abels, Pat Brown, Neil Honor, Jonathon Pegg, Annie and Nigel Lea. The evening raised £259 for Exton church.

ST PETER AND ST PAUL PARISH CHURCH, EXTON Services in October 14th 11.15am Harvest Festival 28th 11.15am Holy Communion and Baptism Weekday Morning Prayer will be said in the church every Wednesday at 9.15am. Everyone is welcome and the short service is about 15 minutes long. From the beginning of November we will meet at Malting Barn. At the Harvest Festival we will again be collecting food items for the Rutland Food bank. At the moment they have plentiful supplies of cereal, pasta, tea, soup, baked beans, toothbrushes and paste and soap. If you are unable to come to the service but would like to donate, please leave food items at the back of the church. Huge thanks to Ed Heckels who masterminded the village quiz last month. Judging by how much everyone enjoyed it, he may be called upon to do one as an annual event! It was recently announced that a new Rector has been appointed and he will be instituted on Saturday January 26th 2019 at 3pm - venue to be decided. His name is Anthony Oram and he is assistant curate of St Aidan's, Hull. He is married to Tessa with 2 grown up sons and is in his 50s, having had a variety of jobs before being ordained. They also have a cat called Jimi so they must be OK! On SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4TH THERE WILL BE AN ALL SOULS SERVICE AT 3PM followed by refreshments. This service is to remember and to give thanks for our loved ones who have died and there will be an opportunity to light a candle in their memory. Services will carry on as usual during the interregnum. General queries can be

directed to the [email protected] and all others to me at

[email protected] or on 811411

CRISPIN’S TRAVELS……

My friendly, black, furry cat called Crispin is a great wanderer in the village and is now on his 4th collar and disc this year. One has just been returned to me - thanks Debbie. He is microchipped but if anyone should find one of his collars I would be grateful if you could return to my mailbox at Malting Barn, (first house on the R in Malting Yard) which is where he lives when not visiting……Sally
