New Volunteers Start the New Year RightDid you make a New Year’s resolution this year? 45% of Americans usually do. Many decide to volunteer and

give back to the community. It’s easy for resolve to dwindle as January drags along, with cold weather and thepost-holiday let down making it all too easy to just stay home. Only 8% of New Year’s resolutions are success-ful. That’s why it’s so remarkable that despite a polar vortex and busy schedules, nearly 50 people started out2014 by attending a volunteer orientation at Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, Chicago Chapter, the firststep in making a difference in the lives of lonely elders around the city.

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. It currently serves 1,340 Chicagoans ages 70 and older, who are aging without the support of family or friends.Little Brothers offers volunteers the opportunity to truly be a friend to seniors in the city through visiting andsocialization programs.

“There’s something for everyone at Little Brothers,” says Volunteer Services Director, Phyllis Barker. “If youlike to visit, we can match you one-on-one with an elder in our Visiting Program. People who like to drive willenjoy accompanying our elders to and from our birthday parties and other events, sharing all the fun. We haveoptions for people who want to volunteer regularly visiting an elder twice a month. Those who want to volun-teer once a month can deliver food bags or make special visits to homebound elders. For people who want tovolunteer once a year, we have many options for sharing the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays. Wehave volunteer opportunities for families with children, and for individuals.”

Little Brothers is a volunteer-driven organization. Each year, over 1,000 volunteers visit elders one-on-one,drive to parties, deliver food bags, help with events, deliver holiday gifts, call to chat, and brighten elders’ lives.

Long-term volunteer Frank Malone has been volunteering with Little Brothers since 2002. “You can find yourniche,” says Malone. Malone has volunteered in several different roles, including visiting elders one-on-one,helping at parties and events, bringing treats to homebound elders, and delivering food bags. As a senior him-self, he values his social interactions with elders and staff. “This is my way of dealing with my own agingprocess,” he says, “I find it not just pleasant, but healthy to spend a lot of time with people my own age, andsometimes much older than me. Some of them are an inspiration.”

Little Brothers volunteers are all ages, from children who visit elders with their parents, to people in theirnineties. The requirements to volunteer include attending a volunteer orientation and completing an applicationand background check.

Volunteer Nancy Hickey attended an orientation in January, and was excited to learn about the volunteeropportunities at Little Brothers. “I think the mission is great,” she says, “I see the value of what older adults havecontributed over all these years. It’s good for us to give back what they have given to us.”

The next volunteer orientations at Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly are February 5, February 8 andMarch 22. Sign up to attend at www.littlebrotherschicago.org
