MONDSEE, JULY 2019PRESS RELEASE

MAX BERGERBerger started climbing at fourteen years old and has built his life around the mountains, both for personal challenge and passion, and in his profession as a certified mountain and ski guide and the country manager for Petzl Austria. Some of the friendships Berger has made over decades of adventuring and mountaineering have helped make this latest expedition possible. Berger was accompanied by Boa’s own Alois Badegruber on previous successful expeditions in Patagonia and the Himalaya.

“Looking back on these expeditions with Max, I learned so much and saw how clearly strong and focused he was”, says Badegruber, General Manager – EMEA at Boa. “He was inspiring then and is even more so today. We are proud to support Max on this adventure and can’t wait to see what his pioneering spirit and passion can achieve.”

At 8,611 m, K2 is the second highest and most difficult 8,000 m peak and Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world at 8,047 m. Harsh conditions at high altitude include extremely strong winds and fast-moving weather. Upon summiting, there is a 10% chance for conditions that will allow Berger to paraglide down. The descent would take 20–30 minutes.

THE PREPERATION FOR THE BIG ADVENTUREPreparation has included a variety of endurance sports, skitouring, long mountain routes, hypoxic training and altitude adaptation. In training, Berger has logged 150,000 m altitude of skitouring, 70 hours of training on the ergometer with the hypoxic mask, and 30,000 m altitude uphill mountain runs with paraglide descent. On top of that, Berger has been sleeping in an altitude tent since mid-April for pre-acclimatization.

For an expedition of this magnitude, the gear can never be an afterthought. The unique nature of each expedition, time of year, terrain, possible weather conditions and of course the objective, all play a role in gear choices. “Using products that integrate the Boa Fit System are on a different performance level, it’s game-changing”, says Berger. “In addition to improving fit and performance of great gear, imagine getting out of the tent at night in –30 °C and try to tighten laces – using the Boa dial is much more practical and durable in frigid conditions.”

THE IDEAL EQUIPMENTA key piece of gear for high level and high-altitude mountaineering is footwear that can provide great climbing performance and is also heavily insulated. This balanced combination is successfully achieved by integrating the Boa® Fit System, pushing the limits of fit, adjustment and performance while climbing.

“To reach the top you need focus, there is no room for mistakes,” says Berger. “When you’re dialed in both mentally and physically, you forget about everything around you, you are in the now. Having the right equipment is just as important to my expedition as the physical preparation, and when I dial in with Boa®, I know the gear will maximize my performance and allow me to focus on the task at hand.”
