Trip to Niagara Falls

What a great trip we had to Niagara Falls, we stayed at the Fallsview Casino and Resort.

We saw the Ricky Nelson Remembered concert and visited Madame Tussuads Wax Museum. Although we did not come home with pockets jingling from the slots, we

brought back memories of good times and a continued friendship that has lasted many years.

Birthday Celebrations

On June 18th I had

an open house in my home where

friends and family came to help me

celebrate my 50th

birthday. My dad and mom, close

family friends Ena and Noel along

with other friends enjoyed

refreshments, and chocolate

cupcakes all while being entertained by Jay Preston guitarist and singer from the

Motion Groves band. I would like to thank my parents, all friends and Jay for

making this a memorable day for me! I would like to extend my thanks and

appreciation to the staff for all their hard

work planning my special day. My birthday celebration was not over with

the open house, it was just the beginning! I packed my bags and I

boarded a huge airplane with my mom and flew out to BC. My actual birthday is

July 3rd, I celebrated on that day with my mom and family. I have four sisters,

brother-in-laws and several nieces and nephews all living out west. I had the

pleasure of staying with my sister Dawn and her husband Glen where I had a

party receiving lots of gifts, cards and a HUGE birthday cake! I had a great time

with my family. I would like to thank my

mother for all her support and efforts to help make this special occasion possible,

“Thank you mom, I love you”. I would like to thank all my family for their love

and support. Last but not least a special appreciation and thank you to Dawn and

Glen for their hospitality. This has been an extra special birthday for me, it would

not have been the same without having

my family and friends celebrate along

with me. Thanks to all! Submitted by Dee

What a Party!

I celebrated my 40th birthday on August 13th at the Legion in my hometown of

Waterford. There were about 40 people

in attendance. My family, friends and

some members from the church I attend came to help celebrate with me. I had a

great time and enjoyed seeing people who I haven’t seen in a while.

You had your choice of vanilla or chocolate cake and each cake had a

picture of me on it! There was a lot of food and beverages to choose from. My

mom made a very tasty punch.

I had many pictures displaying me over the years and important times in my life.

There was live entertainment from a former neighbor who sang and played

the guitar. It was a great day and I really loved that so many people could

share in my special day. Submitted by Aaron

Cottage Life

Nancy enjoyed her time at the cottage in Long Point this summer. She enjoyed a

BBQ and loved sitting in the sun porch watching the birds and squirrels at the

feeders in the yard. This was her first time at a cottage and hopes to make it a

yearly vacation.

Gardening

Trevor thought he

would try a garden this year

and planted peppers and

broccoli. He was very faithful

watering his garden. Especially

since it was such a hot dry summer

and it paid off. Trevor has shared

some peppers with his friends.

My time on the Farm

I spent some time at Ralphy’s Retreat recently. It is a sanctuary for abused

and abandoned animals. There is mostly potbellied pigs and horses, although

there are some other farm animals there

like donkeys and chickens. The farm is located in St. Williams.

I met the pigs. Winston seemed to really enjoy my company although the owner said that he liked his personal space. He

was snorting and making noises and

walking beside me while I was in the pen with him. Cara the owner let a female

pig named Daisy out and she ate some grass off of my pants while I was sitting

on the ground. I enjoyed watching Cara feeding the pigs watermelon.

After leaving the farm, I went into Port Rowan for lunch and then to Twins Ice

Cream for a strawberry sundae. It was a full day, I would like to visit again soon.

Day at the Toronto Zoo

One beautiful day in May Dorothy went

to the Toronto Zoo. She rode on the zoo mobile and took a tour. When the

mobile came to its last stop, we got off to walk around the zoo and saw many

different animals, including the Giant

Pandas. Many people stopped to talk with Dorothy and she would listen, smile

and laugh. There was excitement in Dorothy’s eyes when she saw the

animals, especially the pandas. Dorothy was so tired after her day at the zoo that

while out for dinner that evening she was falling asleep. At the hotel, Dorothy

went to sleep and did not make a sound the rest of the night.

Province begins the process of consultations on the future of

Huronia Regional Centre

Infrastructure Ontario has just released an

online survey, asking people how they think the

site of the former Huronia Regional

Centre (approximately 175 acres of land) should

be used.

It is the position of Community Living Ontario,

that any future use of these lands should benefit

survivors of the institution and the First Nations

who were the original stewards of the land.

The Province of Ontario has no moral authority to

do anything else. If the land is ceded to any level

of government, any other special interest group,

or any corporation, the province will be doing

more harm to survivors, their families and their

supporters and disrespecting First Nations

people.

The background to the survey states that the

government’s current use of the site, on an

additional 87 acres, for an Ontario Disability

Support Program (ODSP) office, court house,

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) academy and a

public health lab, will remain. In fact, the survey

asks if the government should expand its

presence on the property.

Community Living Ontario feels the continued use

of the land by any level of government, is

disrespectful, and morally indefensible. The fact

that a Huronia survivor could potentially have to

go to that ODSP office and possibly re-visit past

trauma is unacceptable.

Please make your voice heard on this critical

issue.

The survey is open until September 30th. You

are also invited to state your views by email at

[email protected]

Infrastructure Ontario has also committed to an

“upcoming consultation” at a later date, where

we are hopeful that those who communicate

through other means will be accommodated.
