The Cortina Chroniclesor Model C Resurrections and Laments

The Resurrection bv Phil Bass. Vista. California:

In 1988 I heard through the grapevine about a man who was selling a Cortina. I gothis phone number, called him, and asked him what year and model it was. He couldn't tellme and asked me to come and have a look.

It turned out that he was the original owner of a 1966 Mk I Cortina 2-door GT. Thecar had lots of surface rust and was sitting on jack stands in his driveway next to a lOSEAnglia, of which he was also the original owner.

He couldn't remember why he stopped driving the GT, but it was last registered in1979. The GT gauges and bezels had been removed and sold by his teenage son. I told theman that the going rate for these cars was $SO--and it was. He accepted this price, as thecity had received a complaint about the car, and he had to move it. His wife cried when Itowed the car away as she used to drive it and loved it.

I gave the GT to my friend Mike Haynes, and he gave it back. The car sat aroundquietly rusting (as do most English Fords-Ed.). Then in 1990 my wife needed a car. Shehad a VW Bug, and I hate Bugs. So I took the Mk I, along with a $60 1968 Mk II 4-door

2

GT which had heavy body damage, and combined the two into one complete car. We soldthe Bug for $1,400 and put the money into the Cortina. We ended up with the Mk I body, suspension, and seats with a Mk II crossflow GT engine and a Mk II semi-close ratiogearbox (the type with the integral remote shifter).

I upgraded the Mk I with a Ford alternator, Mk II 2-speed wipers, negative groundelectrical system, Mk II eleven (II) gallon fuel tank, Capri V6 3-row radiator, Capri 2000fan, and an uprated oil pump with spin-on oil filter. The drive shaft was balanced, as thefactory balance is fair at best. We put on 13 x 6 spoked alloy wheels--called Vectors--withMichelin 185/70 x 13 tires.

The front bumper was cut and reformed into quarter bumpers and then rechromed. To complete the dash, I installed the Mk II gauges in spare Mk I bezels. I had all the seatsreupholstered, recarpeted the car, and installed a Mk II center console. The car wasoriginally burgundy. I had it repainted a brighter plum color with a gold Lotus flash downthe side. (The Lotus Cortinas were white with a green flash.)

I installed new windshield and rear window rubber gaskets. The old ones had shrunkand cracked to the point that you could see inside the car. The front suspension wasrebushed and new shocks installed. We put personalized license plates on the car--66MKI.When I pulled off the old plates I found the cardboard advertising insert from when the carwas sold new from University Ford in San Diego. Also, while working on the car I foundthat the front brake pads were metal to metal. I believe this is why the original ownerstopped driving the car.

My wife has done 100,000 miles on the car in 6 years. I have rebuilt and engine forit, put in a used transmission, and only one clutch. I maintain it myself with parts fromMike Simon at Dave Bean Engineering. My wife loves the car and drives it every day.People are constantly stopping her and asking her what kind of car it is, or saying "Iremember those" or "I had one of those once". All in all, it has been a great car--cheap torun, nice to look at, and a great addition to our family of 10, yes 10, Cortinas.

and now,

The Lament bv Tom Springer. Federal Wqy. Washington:

Help! Every Mk I Cortina on the West coast has disappeared! Early last spring Idecided to follow a childhood dream and purchase a Mk I Cortina. Visions of Lotuspowered cars were shattered by high prices.

3

I narrowed my search to a Mk I 2-door GT. Simple enough. Local adverts, classifieds, buy & sell, Auto Trader... , Yielded nothing. Nothing except a very nice 1965 4door with 38,000 miles...sold to a "Cortina Nut" for $500 in 8 minutes. I joined NAEFR-good move--and got one solid lead. But the seller opted to keep his car. Smart man. I evenran a wanted ad in English Ford. Lines last summer. No luck.

I have contacted vintage racers, Lotus club members, posted want ads in a local traderpublication, and have gotten ZIP! I have spoken with people from many places to no avail.Cars in Florida or on the East coast sound good, but shipping costs are prohibitive. I amrunning another want ad in this issue of Lines. Again. I'd like a Mk I 2-door GT Cortina. But, beggars can't be choosers.... Is there anything left out there?
