MOXTREAL, Can., July 4. - S i x mem- bers of the Grand Trunk Boating club were drowned Saturday night during a canoeing trip. The Grand Trunk Is one of the most prominent of the canoeing clubs here, its mem- bers comprising the highest social grades. Saturday afternoon a party of seventeen left in the war canoe Wan- derer for a trip down the river. Every- thing passed off well until on the up trip from Longwenil. Tlte pad- dlers, in Indian fashion, front face. entered a whirlpool op- posite St Lambert, a snburb on the south shore, near Victoria bridge, the resnlt being that the boat was whirled around the pool a number of limes in quick succession and soan cai>- sized. All the occupants were thrown into the river, and then one of the most heartrending scenes possible to imagine occurred. Twelve of the capsized men managed to catch into the upturned canoe, but the others were whirled away in the boil- ing waters, and although rescuers see- ing the accident put out from both shores in Itoats. they could not save a single one thai was caught in the whirl- after another sank from sight those who were risking 1 b-dylag the osplratkma of f e American people cavalry. The plaifonn opens by approrlng the Minne-apolis platform snd the renomlnatlon of Presi-dent Harrison. It says: 'The admlnlstrallon of the national government under his isadership has been marked by such wUdom and patriotism as to impress the whole country snd give abun-dant assurance that its conlinuanoe will add luster to ths American name and increase the comfort of ths Amerlcaa home." The Min-neapolis nominees are imtorsed; democratic in-capacity, the Indiana gerrymander and the mantgement of state ftltalrs Is denounced as incompetent, wasteful and in the interest of offlce-holders and party managers. Debt and democracy are declared to bs synony-mous terms, and denocratio management ol state affairs is denbunced as improvident and calculated to involvs ths state in hope-less debt and impair the credit of the stale unless checked. The nsw democratic TOI law is denounced as imposing on the farmer, laborer and householder an un-just share of public burdens, aad its radical REVISION i» demanded. The resolutions pledge the republican party to enact such a tax law as will relieve the farm and the homo from the unjust taxation now imposed on them and place a just share on capital and corpor-ate property. The last legislature Is charged with increasing the fees and salaries of state and court officers. The declaration of the dem-ocracy in favor of the repeal of the law impos-ing a 10 per cent tax on state bank issues is de-clared to open the way again to wild-oat banking. The democratio party is de noonced for making the benevolent in-stitutions partisan, and non-partisan man agement is demanded: the organization of labor is approved; the generous pension laws passed by the republican congress are com-mended: a tribute is paid to the memory of late GOT. Alvin P. Horey. and sympathy is tendered TO Hlaine and his family in their affliction.
