Homework for October 14 to 18

Homework books and folders will be sent home on Mondays. Assignments can be completed directly into the notebook, or can be completed on the worksheets provided, printed off, stapled together ( child’s name on each page ), and placed (not glued or stapled) into the notebook .

Have your child return the completed homework in its folder to school on or before Friday.

If your child has brought home a Character Education bag, please ensure that the bag, activity, and all of the bag contents are returned by Thursday.

Parents are responsible for checking that all assignments have been completed, marking each assignment, and having your child do corrections.

Home ReadingIt is very important for students to read for 15-20 minutes each night. Raz Kids log in cards are glued on the inside of the front cover of the homework notebook. Students should be using Raz Kids at least 3 times each week. You can also use books from home, the school library, public library, or their Poetry folder when it is sent home. Raz Kids – Each student has their level set by the teacher. As we continue our work together, your child’s level may be changed to a higher or lower level as needed. When using Raz Kids, students should First, read the book, then listen to the book, and finally, do the quiz. Your child may not be reading many words yet, and so he or she may be working on “Read the Pictures” by telling you a story for each picture. This will include telling who is in the picture and what is happening, but may also include details like when and where this part of the story is taking place or how the character is feeling. If it is a non-fiction book, your child can tell you what he or she has learned from the picture. By “Reading the Pictures” your child will begin thinking about the words that may be found on the page and will also start making connections to what is being read. I see, I think, I wonder.

When listening to your child read, you can help with the three P’s: Pause Prompt Praise

1. Pause: If your child gets stuck on a word, PAUSE and let him/her try and figure out the word.

2. Prompts: Here are some ideas to help your child if he/she needs some extra help:

Make the first sound of the word. Look at the picture. What clues do you see? Now try the word again. Blend the letter sounds together. Think about what makes sense in the sentence. Look for little words inside the big words (chunking) Does that sound right? Does that make sense?

3. Praise: Give your child positive reinforcement for reading and persevering through difficult words. Say things like:

You are doing a great job reading! I know you are stuck, but give it a try I like how you…. (Be sure to praise their attempts and what they’re doing

well). Try and think of a word that makes sense in the sentence – (substitutions are

also very good)

During and after the reading, make sure to talk about the story. Not only is it important that your child is able to decode and read with fluency, but he/she must also demonstrate an understanding of what is being read.

More Importantly:

Be sure to model reading yourself. Read to your child. Talk about the story.

*SPELLING WORK SHOULD BE COMPLETED IN THE HOMEWORK NOTEBOOK OR ON A SHEET OF LINED PAPER, AND HANDED IN. When writing out the spelling words, ensure your child is printing with proper letter formation*

We have provided three   options  for the spelling portion of the homework.  Please choose the option that is most successful for your child. ***All students should be practicing each word at least 3 times each in their notebook.

Option One – Write all of the words three times each in your homework book.   Write one single   sentence one or more of the words, using a capital and a period.  For example: I have a fish.  If your child is not yet able to write the words independently, have your child say a simple sentence orally using the word(s), write the sentence for your child and then read it together, and finally have him/her copy the sentence and then read it back, pointing to each word as it is read. Option Two – Write all of the words three times each in your homework book.   Write one sentence for each word in a sentence (5 sentences in all) using a capital and a period. For example:  I have one gold fish. Option Three – Write all of the words three times each in your homework book. Write one detailed sentence for each word. Include who/what/where/when/why details and/or descriptive words to your sentence. For example: I have a gold fish that I feed every day. *When writing out the spelling words, ensure your child is printing with proper letter formation and is leaving a space between words.*
