Thousands of brave men fought and died in America's Revolutionary War. Women were left to make do as best they could and black women, mostly slaves, had an even harder time. But some black women took a stand to claim freedom for their country.

Another “unknown” hero during the American Revolution, Austin Dabney was a slave who fought against the British. In order to address objections concerning Dabney’s slave status, his master claimed Dabney had been born free. Dabney fought bravely and was seen as war hero by many. He was given his freedom after the war.

A PRAYER FOR JULY

Hear our prayer, Oh Lord. Incline your ear to us because you are our Heavenly Father, our God of grace and mercy. You are the everlasting Father whose loving-kindness embraces us every day of our lives. You are God, who liberated us and set us free through the love and sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior. May the Holy Spirit guide our hearts and minds in our petition and supplications unto thee!

We praise and bless your holy name, Lord God, because we appreciate that we are in the “land of the free and home of the brave.” We acknowledge that we are in a land where freedom of speech and freedom of religion exist. We are grateful for being beneficiaries of the hard won victories of emancipation as well as constitutional and statutory privileges of equality. We celebrate that on a higher plane, your word proclaims that we should “…stand fast therefore in the liberation wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (Gal. 5:1).

Yet, in times like these, Dear Lord, many of us are exhausted and aggrieved from the continuing evil, chaos and confusion that we are experiencing each day in this land that you have given unto us. We beseech your intervention to address the inhuman and immoral conduct perceived to be not of just flesh and blood, but of principalities, powers and rulers of darkness. Thus, we pray for the power to put on your “whole armor” in order to sustain the liberation and freedom due to us and our brothers and our sisters in Christ Jesus (Eph.6: 11 & 12). Because we foresee systematic attempts that threaten our

liberated way of life, we pray for your strength so that we will not “be still” nor remain “silent” in our response. Thus, we call upon you, Heavenly Father, to lead us in how to “stand-up”. Guide us and help us in how to “hold out” for the righteous power which will enable us to withstand and overcome these temporal attacks.

Dear God, we trust your faithfulness and claim the freedom and the liberation that our Savior, Jesus Christ has provided unto us. We praise you because we believe that those whom Jesus Christ has set free are free indeed (John 8:36).

So, bless us, O Lord that we concentrate on our Christian/spiritual responsibilities. Hold us accountable to exercise the appropriate Christian/spiritual virtue. Help us, while we wait on our change, that we manifest the Christian character appropriate to the circumstance, whether the need is for chastity, temperance, generosity, diligence, gratitude or humility (Summa Theologica; St. Thomas Aquinas), or whether the need is for compassion, kindness, gentleness or patience (Col. 3:12). Bless us also to practice the appropriate “Fruit of the Spirit” (Eph. 5:22). Holy Spirit, with your guidance, in the name of Jesus, we believe that “The Spirit” and the “Virtues” will make us strong, translate into love and give us the power to overcome evil with good.

All praise unto thee, O Lord, for the “strength of character” that will enable us to fight back and resist those who would impose “bondage” and bless all of us to live bountiful and liberated in a land that you have ordained for us.

We pray that you order our steps in your way, Father God. Help us as we go forward with our duty unto you in the blessed name of Jesus Christ and for his sake, we pray. Am
