This man might very well be the future of F1 in America.

Calm, composed, and charming- these are the three c’s that can sum up 22-year-old Formula 1 protégé Alexander Rossi. Although he may not yet be a household name in his native US, he has garnered his fair share of media attention. Yet again, in a country where F1 has a backseat to the likes of NASCAR and Indy, who is an F1 household name?

I sat down with Rossi following his Friday run at the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix. He was no stranger to the track as he had raced and won at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Formula BMW. Shortly after, he boarded a flight to his Le Mans test session for Caterham, who is looking into entering the prestigious endurance race in the near future. This Friday run was actually the first time that he had the 2013 Caterham F1 vehicle on track. He managed to put in 20 laps during the 90 minute practice session in an array of conditions.

ALEXANDER ROSSi

“It was great to get back into F1 action and to do so in Canada, at a track I’ve raced and won at in the past in For-mula BMW, was a good feeling,” he said.

The hectic weather conditions allowed Rossi to run on wets, inters and slicks, giving him the chance to try out the full range of tyres, something he hadn’t done before in F1. “After the installation lap I wanted to go straight back out again as, for me, moving up from GP2 grip levels to F1, even though the track was wet to start with, there was still so much more grip than I’m used to that I wanted to get on with it.”

Although he was only announced as a test driver for Cater-ham F1 in 2012, the Nevada City native has been hovering around the world of F1 since 2009 when he test drove the 2009-spec BMW Sauber F1.09 Formula One vehicle as part of the young driver’s test in Jerez, Spain.

“From the very beginning, when I fist started, my goal was to drive in F1,” he said with the utmost conviction in his voice. In order to achieve his goal, he knew he had excel on the European circuit. Rossi broke into the racing world in 2005 in the Skip Barber Western Regional. Year after year he pro-gressed up the ranks from Formula BMW to GP2, GP3, and Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

After living in Italy for two years, he relocated to England as soon as the Caterham opportunity arose in 2011.

“I think the biggest challenge, as everyone will tell you, is always going to come back to the budget, and finding the budget,” says Rossi.

He considers himself very fortunate to be a part of one of the few teams that are chasing American sponsors. “GE is very close to us, Dell and Intel as well. There’s a lot of interest from them,” he says as he quickly segways into the success of the US Grand Prix.

“I think the biggest challenge, as everyone will tell you, is always going to come back to the budget, and finding the budget,” says Rossi.

The California native’s 2013 corporate backers also include Alaska Coffee Roasting, and Vichy Springs.

During the 2012 US Grand Prix, Ecclestone hinted at the possibility of a third US race in California, which would be a home state race for Rossi. “I Think the US is definitely big enough to support it, and it’s diverse enough- there’s not one state that’s the same,” said the 22-year-old when asked if he believes there is a market for 3 US races. “I think that would be something that would be possible, whether it will happen in the near future I don’t know, but obviously Long Beach was a successful race- there’s no reason why they can’t do something like that again.”

It surely has been a hectic year for Rossi, juggling between GP2, Le Mans, and F1 testing. “I think the biggest thing is also getting used to the team, and the size of the team,” he said. “In the junior program you have eight or nine people you need to work with- F1 has about 60, So that is a bit overwhelming.”

Rossi, along with a promising 2012 and 2013 US Grand Prix sure is something that can have race fans excited in the US. The corporate backing and investments that American corporations have undertaken is also very promising in a country which had seemed to hit rock bottom in F1. Can Alexander Rossi possibly be the face of F1 in the US- he is surely on the right track.-

GILLES

VILLENEUVE Gilles Villeneuve, the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Quebec native was often referred to by his boss Enzo Ferrari as Il Piccolo Canadese, the little Canadian. Gilles was a lover of speed, be it in his Ferrari F1 car, snowmobile, or anything that is propelled in a forward motion. His tragic death at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix may have put an end to his life, but his legacy lives on to this day. Despite never having wan a World Championship, Gilles remains one of the most revered pilots in Ferrari history. His son Jacques became Formula 1 World Champion in 1997. The circuit used for the Canadian Grand Prix bears his name. Every year, the start finish line bears the inscription Salut Gilles. In French salut has two meanings, goodbye is one of them. I prefer to think it is the latter meaning- hello.

5 MINUTES with Mario Andretti

F1T: You raced during the golden age of Formula 1. You were World Champion with Lotus in 1978 with John Player Special. What do you think is the main difference between yesterday’s F1 and the current Formula 1?MA:There is a certain evolution, which is normal, times change. Formula One is much more commercial today, but you can also say that currently it is a golden age, just like when I was racing. At the moment, Formula One is enjoying a certain level of popularity throughout the world which is phenomenal. This is why you can’t really say that the old days were better than today. I see today’s Formula One to be at a very positive place, I like what I see. There are new circuits and new races broadcast all over the world. The formula itself is a formula which is very exciting, it withholds the highest level of technology. These are all important elements.

F1T: Can you compare the first US Grand Prix last year in Austin to the second year, do you think there is more enthusiasm from the spectators?MA: I would say yes. Already last year, it integrated itself very nicely, being the area’s first contact with Formula One.

F1T: You raced with Gilles Villeneuve. Can you tell us a few words about Gilles Villeneuve and other champions such as Niki Lauda whome you had the pleasure to race against?MA: Gilles Villeneuve as a person was extremely charismatic. We were friends… we raced together… as a pilot he was incredible. He was always in the running and he had a lion’s heart.

F1T: What emotion did you feel winning the World Championship with Lotus John Player Special, and finishing your last two races with Ferrari. Is there a particular emotion to be part of Ferrari, or did you just want to race and win?MA: The priority is always to have the best car. In my case, I always had a soft spot in my heart with Ferrari. It was very special for me to win my first race with Ferrari, it’s an incredible achievement in my career. Having raced the last two races in F1 with Ferrari, having replaced Pironi, which at that point I had already left F1. For me, Ferrari will always be Ferrari.

F1T: it’s always in your heart.MA:Always in my heart, I always want to see them ahead.

F RIDAYREPORT

A wet first practice session on Friday saw Force India driver Paul Di Resta score abest lap time of 1:21.020, followed by Jenson Button at 1:21.108. The times weredrastically reduced on a much dryer surface during the second session with Ferrari’sFernando Alonso’s 1:14.818 lap time. “It was an untypical Friday, affected by the extremely changeable weather,” saidAlonso. “We can expect a very complicated weekend, because the weather is due toremain changeable right up to Sunday and judging the grip level will be difficult, both in qualifying and in the race.”The controversial Barcelona tyre test in which the Mercedes F1 team were involvedin was a main topic of discussion during the Friday FIA press conference followingthe second round of free trials at this year’s Canadian Grand Prix.Mercedes boss Ross Brawn has confirmed that the go ahead with the controversialtyre test last month was indeed his decision.Brawn, who was present along with fellow team principals Martin Whitmarsh(McLaren), Christian Horner (Red Bull Racing), Stefano Domenicali (Ferrari), andMonisha Kaltenborn (Sauber) was quick to defend his decision. The Mercedes boss’ first statement was that the testing has been mislabeled as asecret test, rather than a private test. “It wasn’t a secret test. I think anyone whobelieves you can got to Barcelona and do three days of testing, or 1000km of testing, and not have anyone become aware of it is naïve,” he said in front of the world press.

S ATURDAYREPORT

The weather continued to be a factor throughout the entire Saturday free practice and qualifying sessions. During the last practice session, a gap of more than eight seconds separated the quickest pilot Mark Webber (1:17.895) and the slowest Jules Bianchi (1:26.195).

Despite out of the ordinary temperature and weather, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel managed to be in top form and captured pole position on intermediate tyres. “Well it was very, very tricky, especially because you never knew what the conditions were like the next time you were out,” said

three time world champion Vettel.Mercedes pilot Lewis Hamilton nabbed the second spot on the grid. Hamilton did express his disappointment at not grabbing the top spot. “Pole was definitely there, so it’s a bit unfortunate but that’s the way it goes.”The surprive of the afternoon was a third place result by rookie Williams driver Valtteri Bottas. “it means a lot,” said the delighted Finnish driver. It’s way more up in the grid than what we really could ever imagine… It’s been so difficult, the first six races for us and it will be a nice boost for the team

23

It’s a well-deserved result for Valtteri and for the whole team and it gives us all a real boost after all the hard work everyone has been putting in.

Mike Coughlan, Williams Technical Director

We didn’t have grip in these conditions so we did pretty much all we could do, but if there’s no grip you can’t go faster. In this weather it’s difficult as sometimes the rain gets harder, sometimes the track is drying so you have to try to be out there when the circuit’s at its best. P9 on the grid is not what we want so we’ll have to see what we can do in the race tomorrow.

Kimi Räikkönen, Lotus Driver:

“I’m quite happy with eighth place. It was a tough qualifying session and very hard to judge the conditions. Some parts of the track were wet and other areas were dry, so it was difficult to know how much to push. I also struggled to get the heat in the tyres, so it was not easy to get it altogether for one lap.

Sunday, June 9th reserved something that had not been seen in a while; the sun. A sunny day was the setting for a Sabastian Vettel dominated race. Vettel got off to a good start, built a comfortable gab, and was able to maintain that cusion until the very end. The German triple champion took the checkered flag 14 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. This marks the first time that Red Bull, or Vettel has won on Canadian soil.

“Obviously we’ve had good races before but it didn’t come together to win,” said Vettel. “Two years ago I was very close. I lost it in the last lap, it was my mistake, so made up for it today.”Alonso, who started sixth on the grid, treated the Montreal crowd to one of his signature superstarts. The Ferrari pilot was able to get past Webber, Rosberg, and Hamilton. “At the end I think the second place has a victory taste because we scored some good points after a very difficult weekend,” he said.

Mercedes GP pilot Lewis Hamilton finished just over a second behind Alonso, who he considered to be “massively quick”. “It was very difficult to keep him behind… I tried my best, I got close once he got past me, but he was just generally took quick for me.”

Robinson. Robinson passed away following an accident while Esteban Gutierez’s vehicle was being towed off the circuit.

Quotes of the day

Incredible! I’m very happy. The best result for me of course, but also the highest finishing position since Vettel’s results for the team in 2008. It is even more satisfying, because it was a normal race in the dry, with no one going out in front of me so we achieved this position fair and square.

Jean-Eric Vergne, Toro Rosso driver

Today, we absolutely had to make up for the difficult day we had yesterday, because we knew the more normal weather would allow us to demonstrate our true potential. The podium was in our sights and we can claim to have hit the target, in a race that was complicated from start to finish by our grid positions. Fernando produced an absolutely extraordinary performance, especially when taking into account that today, our competitors operated at a really high level.

Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari Team Principal

We fought hard to try and secure some points today but ultimately we just didn’t have the pace in the car. I didn’t get a great start which allowed a few cars to jump me on the first lap, and in the dry conditions we simply couldn’t match the level of competitiveness we showed yesterday. The tyre wear in the first stint was also high which made

Friday November 15, 2013The day started off very foggy, but the sunny skies were not far away. The fag delayed the first practice session by about 40 minutes. A total of 58,276 spectators turned out during the day.Scuderia Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso clocked the fastest time of 1:38.343 during practice session one. “Compared to last year, the track conditions seemed better: for the first Grand Prix here, it was too new and there was a bit of oil on the track, while now there’s a lot more grip,” commented Alonso.Four-time, and reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel of Infiniti Red Bull Racing ruled the time sheets in session two, with a top time of 1:37.305. Heikki Kovalainen joins the Lotus F1 Team, replacing his compatriot Kimi Raikkonen who underwent back surgery. Kovalainen finished the second session with the fifth fastest time.“It’s been a pretty smooth landing, joining Lotus F1 Team,” said the finn. “We’ve had no major issues on track today and we just need to keep chipping away to see how good we can get the car for tomorrow and Sunday,” he added.

Saturday November 16, 2013The second day of the US Grand Prix kicked off with the third and final practice session which was dominated by both Red Bull vehicles. Vettel clocked a time of 1:36.733, while his teammate Mark Webber followed closely at 1:36.936.The practice session was an indication of things to come during the qualifying session as Vettel and Webber continued to dominate and captured a one-two spot on the grid.Sebastian Vettel captured pole position with a time of 1:36.338 in Q3. “It was a tricky session because the wind, I think, picked up quite a lot from this morning and… yeah, it does influence the behaviour of the cars so, not that easy, especially around the high-speed corners,” commented pole-sitter Vettel. “I wasn’t that happy with my first run in Q3 but I think I had a solid run at the end which I think was enough to put the car on pole,” he added.Webber ended Q3 with a time of 1:36.441. “It’s easy to unload the car a little bit in these conditions, so yeah, sometimes you’re happy that you’ve given your best and you’re on the front row but today one slipped through the fingers,” said Webber. Lotus driver Romain Grosjean captured the third spot on the grid. Grosjean stressed that it had not been an easy week for the team. “We struggled a little bit yesterday and this morning. I think conditions are not so easy starting early in the morning. – and I don’t like to wake-up early as well so it doesn’t make it easy.

Paul Di RestaForce India Driver“I’m reasonably happy with today’s result because this is a track that does not particularly suit my driving style. The wind picked up quite a bit before qualifying, which made the conditions tricky and I think we made the most of that. We out-qualified some quick cars today and in the end I was just a tenth away from making Q3.”

Xevi Pujolar,Chief Race Engineer - Williams“The Circuit of the Americas is quite unique in terms of track layout, roughness and temperature which, mixed with the fact that the tyre compound choices are on the conservative side, makes getting the tyres working well the key to a good qualifying lap. We had better performance in FP1 and were working to bring this back in practice this morning.”

Paul HemberyPirelli’s motorsport director“Our tyre choice here is on the conservative side, which means that getting the tyres up to the right temperature was important. That was not necessarily an easy task today as the track temperature actually fell slightly during the session, which is not the normal pattern we see in qualifying. With variable winds and temperatures throughout the afternoon, it wasn’t a particularly easy session for anybody.”

Sunday November 17, 2013An impressive crowd of 113,162 Formula 1 enthusiasts watched Sebastian Vettel make history at the Circuit of the American during the 2013 US Grand Prix. Vettel, the 26-year-old reigning World Champion, scored his eighth consecutive Grand Prix victory, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record of seven straight wins. The German chose a one-stop strategy, starting on the P Zero White medium tyre and then changing to the P Zero Orange hard on lap 27. “It’s incredible. I think it’s one of those things that you never expect to… one of those records that you never expect to be beaten so it’s very difficult to find the right words,” said an emotional Vettel following the race.“When you realise that you’ve done it, it makes you very proud in that moment and, yeah, I think it’s very difficult for all of us to realise what it actually means,” added the German World Champion. “People look back and they talk about that time and about certain drivers and one day people might look back and talk about our time and what we’ve done as a team.” Lotus F1 driver Romain Grosjean claimed the second spot on the podium, while Vettel’s teammate, Mark Webber, took third. NBC Sports’ live broadcast of the race drew 1.010 million viewers, up 47 percent versus last year on SPEED (688,000), according to final national data provided today by The Nielsen Company. The total attendance for COTA’s second Formula 1 Grand Prix was 250,324, with 58,276 fans attending Friday’s practice sessions and 78,886 turning out for Saturday’s qualifying rounds.

The Race according to PirelliSebastian Vettel took his 29th career victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Canada, and the first at the circuit for Red Bull Racing. Vettel used a two-stop strategy to win the race and extend his championship lead, starting on the P Zero Red supersoft tyre, before switching to the P Zero White medium and completing the race with a final stint on this tyre.

Following wet conditions in qualifying, the race was entirely dry today. Even though they had a free choice of slick tyres with which to start the race, the top 10 all chose to begin on the supersoft. The softest tyre in Pirelli’s Formula One range proved to be up to a second faster than the medium with a rapid warm-up time, making it a key element of Vettel’s sprint strategy.Force India’s Paul Di Resta was the highest-placed driver to try something different, having started from 17th on the grid with the medium tyre. The Englishman stopped just once after 56 laps on the medium compound to finish seventh. The Lotus of Romain Grosjean and the two Marussias were the only other cars to begin the race on the harder compound.

Having gathered very little experience of running on the slick compounds up to the race due to the wet weather, the teams had to adopt a flexible approach to their strategy today, with little information on relevant wear and degradation rates. As expected, both wear and degradation rates remained low.

Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “The Canadian Grand Prix was a slight step into the unknown for everybody, with track temperatures considerably higher than they had been in qualifying yesterday. Canada is one of the most challenging circuits for the rear tyres due to high traction demands – particularly after it has rained previously in the weekend, because the moisture has the effect of washing away all the rubber that has been laid down before, which decreases grip levels further. Despite that, wear and degradation was under control for all the frontrunners and there was little of the graining that is a common feature of this race as well. Mercedes still seems to be suffering from high levels of degradation with Nico Rosberg being the only driver in the top 10 having to use a three-stop strategy. While two stops was clearly the way to go, Paul Di Resta drove an excellent race to show what was possible with a one- stopper, completing 56 laps on his first set of medium tyres.”

VETTEL WINS IN THE

UNITED STATES WITH

ONE PIT STOPThe winner of the 2013 US Grand Prix, Vettel, chose a one-stop strategy, starting on the P Zero White medium tyre and then changing to the P Zero Orange hard on lap 27. Vettel also became the first man in Formula One history to win eight consecutive races in the course of a season.

The biggest challenge facing the drivers throughout the Austin weekend was hugely variable track temperatures, ranging from 18 degrees centigrade on Friday to a maximum of 37 degrees centigrade for the race on Sunday. This had an obvious effect on tyre behaviour, making it very difficult for teams to predict wear and degradation – and therefore the strategy.

Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne was the only driver to start on the hard tyre from 14th on the grid, with the strategy also affected by a two-lap safety car period right at the beginning of the race: when the cars are at their heaviest and tyre wear is most significant. The first pit stop of the race was for Sauber driver Esteban Gutierrez on lap one, who picked up a puncture due to debris from a start incident. He put on the hard tyre and ran with it to lap 36, when he went back on the medium. Another early stopper was Williams driver Pastor Maldonado, who went onto the hard compound on lap eight while accident damage to his car was repaired.

The first scheduled stop was Heikki Kovalainen for Lotus on lap 17, who put on the hard tyres and managed to make up three places by ‘undercutting’ his direct rivals, before losing time with a nose change.

Vettel pitted for his set of hard tyres from the lead on lap 27, handing the lead briefly to Lotus driver Romain Grosjean for three laps until the Frenchman pitted. Grosjean finished runner-up, six seconds behind Vettel, to equal his best-ever Formula One finish.

The top 12 finishers all used a one-stop strategy, with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa the highest-placed finisher to adopt a two-stop strategy, ending up 13th.

Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “The variation in temperature we saw over the course of the weekend was quite remarkable, meaning that the drivers encountered different track conditions in every session. With such a wide spread of asphalt temperatures, you would ideally need more than just the two compounds stipulated in the regulations, but these were highly unusual circumstances and that was obviously not an option! As a result, the teams did not really have a proper read on the wear and degradation rates heading into the race. Nonetheless, most drivers chose a one-stop strategy as we expected, helped by the safety car period at the beginning of the grand prix, which then led to a race with less strategy and fewer variables than we have been accustomed to recently.”

Only an exceptional timepiece can bear the name of one of the finest pilots in the history of Formula 1. Hublot have just re-leased three watches in the Sen-na collection in honor of the late Brazilian champion.

Following on from the phenom-enal success of the first Big Bang Senna presented in 2007, the Big Bang Foudroyante Senna pre-sented in Tokyo in 2009 and the King Power Ayrton Senna pre-sented at the São Paulo Grand Prix in 2010 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the driver’s birth, we can now celebrate Ayr-ton’s 41 victories and 3 champi-onship titles with a super limited edition of 3 models with only 41 pieces each.

The three timepieces will be available in King Gold, Titanium or black PVD Titanium. Only 41 of each of the three watches will be produced in honour of the Brazilian icon’s 41 victories and 3 championship titles. This is the most complicated watch pro-duced for the Senna collection.

Ayrton’s sister Viviane, and his nephew Bruno were present at the Hublot factory in Switzerland for the unveiling of the collection. “We are so proud of having Hublot as one of our long lasting part-ners and extremely honoured that they chose the Senna collec-tion to present their new special watch design and technology,” said the former F1 pilor Bruno Senna. “Celebrating Ayrton’s vic-tories and titles with such a beautiful and special collection is out-standing.”

Bruno, along with Hublot CEO Ricardo Guardalupe, was given a tour of the workshops, where he saw the very first MP-06 Senna models in production.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to welcome Bruno to our manufac-ture in Switzerland. He is a fine spokesman for the magnificent work being done in Brazil by his mother Viviane and the entire Senna family. We are delighted that our support, as well as that of many friends and partners, is helping to sustain their commit-ment to give millions of children the education they need to build a future and a better life.”

The MP-06 Senna features an expertly openworked sapphire dial reveals the manufacture tourbillon movement. The Senna brand logo (in yellow, green or red depending on the version) appears as a transfer at 9 o’clock on the sapphire dial. The watch comes in a special Hublot presentation case with a perfect miniature re-production of Ayrton Senna’s helmet design in 88, 89 and 91. left: Ricardo Guardalupe right : Bruno Senna
