ADVOCATING FOR MOTORISTS Representatives of Pennsylvania’s AAA clubs met in Harrisburg on April 21 and 22 for their annual Pennsylvania AAA Federation Legislative Affairs events.  Discussions with state legislators and senior government officials focused on issues affecting the state’s motorists, including: the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s research on distracted driving; emissions and safety inspections; and a proposal to make Pennsylvania’s seat belt law a primary rather than secondary offense. The AAA family of clubs represents almost 3.2 million Pennsylvania motorists – and direct contact with elected officials is an excellent way to articulate AAA’s positions.  Pictured standing:  Theresa Podguski, AAA East Central, Director of Legislative Affairs as she testifies before the committee.

Kids, Cars and Heat Are a Deadly CombinationAAA urges caregivers to “look before you lock”by Llyena Boylan, Chairman, AAA East Central, East Penn Region

Sizzling summer temperatures mean things can heat up quickly, especially for children, seniors and pets left inside closed vehicles. Heatstroke or hyperthermia can occur when the outside temperature is as low as 57 degrees!

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle fatalities for children 14 and under. Statistics compiled by San Jose State University found that an average of 37 children perish every year from being left in a hot vehicle. Some were left behind or forgotten by an adult. Others gained access to an unlocked car and could not get out.

Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can reach dangerous levels within minutes. Sunshine coming through car windows makes your car work like an oven. According to a study sponsored by General Motors, it takes just 10 minutes for the temperature inside a vehicle to rise by 19 degrees. In 30 minutes it can rise as much as 34 degrees.

Heat rapidly overwhelms the body’s ability to regulate temperature. Children under four are especially vulnerable because their bodies do not have the same internal temperature control as an adult’s, and warm three times to five times faster.

Heatstroke occurs when the body core temperature reaches 104 degrees F, and a body core temperature of 107 degrees F is almost always fatal. Warning signs include red, hot, and moist or dry skin, no sweating, a strong rapid pulse, or a slow weak pulse, nausea, confusion or acting strangely. If a child exhibits any of these symptoms after being in a hot vehicle, NHTSA recommends cooling the child rapidly and calling 911.

Dogs are more susceptible to heatstroke than people because unlike humans, they mostly lack the ability to sweat. They cool their bodies by panting, and dogs with short muzzles are at greater risk because of their narrow, short airways. Don’t leave an animal in a parked vehicle in warm weather, no matter how briefly, and make sure your pet has access to shade and water when you travel.

Attempts to add an element of safety by “cracking” the windows — enough to let in air but keep others out — have been shown to be ineffective at keeping car interiors at an acceptable temperature.

Make a habit of looking inside your vehicle — front and back — before locking the door and walking away. Unlocked cars pose serious risks to children who may be naturally curious. Once they crawl in,

Picture this: You just got off the plane, and you’re waiting at the rental car counter for the clerk to pull up your reservation. You’re daydreaming about driving along the beach, when the clerk interrupts your reverie. “Would you like to purchase our optional insurance coverage?” he asks.

It’s just one of several insurance-related scenarios you might encounter this summer. As you plan for your vacation, you also need to think about your insurance, to make sure you’re properly covered should something unexpected happen. Here are some common seasonal situations where it helps to have some insurance know-how.Renting a car

Typically, if you have a full-coverage auto policy, it will apply, subject to deductibles, to rental cars in the United States. However, before you leave home, review your policy and declarations pages so you’re aware of what insurance protection you have. That way, you’ll know what you might need when you get to the rental counter.

The most common optional insurance coverage by rental car companies is Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). This CDW covers the cost to repair the rental vehicle if it is stolen, vandalized or if you return it damaged. The waiver may also cover loss-of-use fees

that a rental agency might charge while a car is being repaired. Again, if your auto policy is a full-coverage policy, you would be covered for these losses subject to the limits of your deductible.

Optional insurance coverage offered by rental car companies can be very expensive and can vary depending on where you’re renting a car. Make sure you read the contract or talk to the rental agent if you have questions about what that optional auto policy covers before you go. Another possible source of coverage is your credit card. Check with your credit card company to see if it covers any deductibles in the event of a loss with a rental car that is charged on the card.Going on a road trip

Before you hit the road, make sure your insurance is up-to-date and consider these questions:

Are you going to share the driving? Check to see if your auto policy covers a permissive user–someone else that you allow to drive the car. If it does, then your auto coverage remains in effect no matter who’s driving. However, if you’ve specifically excluded someone from your policy (for example, a person who has his or her own policy or a child who’s away at college), your loss wouldn’t be covered if that person was driving and became involved in an accident.

Crossing the border? Many U.S. insurance policies are valid in Canada. In Mexico, however, U.S. policies are often invalid. If you’re involved in an accident anywhere in Mexico, your insurance company might not be able to help you. You can buy Mexico auto insurance for your trip from any of the brokers along the border or at selected AAA branch offices in border communities.

What You Should Know Before You Go On VacationGet your insurance ducks in a row before you leave

JULY/AUGUST 20154

Technically, impairment begins with the first drink. Legally, for drivers in the United States at least, it begins at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08. Scientifically, however, its tragic effects seem to become truly magnified at a BAC of .05.

When the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a safety report called “Reaching Zero: Actions to Eliminate Alcohol-Impaired Driving” in May 2013, it included a list of 19 recommendations that, if enacted, could make considerable progress toward the project’s ambitious goal.

One lightning-rod bullet point, however, received the most attention by far: the NTSB’s call to reduce the legal blood alcohol concentration limit from .08 to .05 for all drivers.

In a presentation to Public Affairs delegates at the 2014 AAA Annual Meeting, former NTSB member Mark Rosekind made clear that the .05 figure wasn’t “just pulled out of a hat” and that there was plenty of science behind it. More than 70 countries already have an .05 limit or lower, including most of Europe, South America and Australia.

The science is consistently clear:• A 2000 study showed that the risk

of fatal crash involvement at BACs between .05 and .08 ranged from 3 to 17 times greater depending on the age of the driver and the type of fatal crash.

• Studies in 2002 and 2005 showed that at a BAC level of .05, drivers are 1.38 times more likely to be in a crash than sober drivers. At .08, the risk jumps to 2.69 times higher.

• Since .05 BAC limits were instituted in Australia, Japan and many European nations, studies have shown that fatal crashes have decreased and injuries have been reduced in those countries. Fatal crashes among males ages 18 to 49 in Europe have markedly decreased and overall fatal crashes in Australia were reduced up to 18 percent.

• A 2014 study showed that in two-vehicle accidents between drivers with BAC levels of .05 to .07 and drivers with BAC levels of .08, the drivers with the lower BAC levels were found solely at blame for the crash just as often as the .08 drivers.

The mere establish-ment of a .05 limit likely would discourage many drivers from drinking and driving at all. In the Canadian province of British Columbia, September 2010 laws enacted immediate vehicle impoundment, a 72-hour driver’s license suspension and heavy fines for BACs between .05 and .08, with more severe sanctions for multiple offenders and those with BACs of .08 or above.

The results? A September 2012 study showed that drivers with BACs over .08 decreased by 59 percent and drivers with levels from .05 to .08 decreased by 44 percent from 2010. Decreases in drinking and driving were universal across all age groups, sex and communities, and 92 percent of drivers were aware of the new sanctions. Overall, levels of drinking and driving were the lowest ever recorded in the province.

The effort to reduce the BAC threshold from .10 to .08 in the U.S. took two decades, so when it released its 2013 report, the NTSB realized it was just a starting point.

In the two years since, legislation to lower BAC limits has been introduced in five states – Kentucky, New York, South Carolina, Vermont, and Washington – and a hearing on the topic has been held in Utah.  None of these initiatives achieved serious traction.

A number of organizations support the NTSB’s call for a lower limit, including the American Trucking Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization. AAA agrees that the science is clear on impairment below .08 BAC. And while AAA is not currently pushing for changes in state laws, the club has begun to educate its members and the public about the risks of driving while impaired at lower BAC levels—an integral first step to changing public opinion on this safety issue.

The Science Behind .05Plenty of studies — at home and abroad — back up the NTSB’s call for a reduced BAC limit

Millions of Americans ride bi-cycles to exercise, have fun, and get where they need to go. Today’s high-tech two-wheelers are not only perfect for fitness and recreation; they reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

Cycling can also be hazardous. Bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other form of transportation except the automobile. During the summer, child bicycling deaths increase 45 percent above the monthly average.

That’s not to say that bicycle safety is strictly a children’s issue. Statistically, cyclists ages 45–54 suffer the highest fatality rates. Head injuries are the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes and wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet has been shown to reduce the risk by up to 85 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Motorists bear a special respon-sibility to share the road safely with

bicyclists, pedestrians, and other legal forms of transportation. Many don’t realize that in most states the law treats bicycles like any other vehicle and they should be given the same consideration.

AAA recommends that motorists double check before changing lanes or making a turn — once for cars and trucks, and once for bicycles and motorcycles. Cutting into the path of a bicyclist while making a right turn is one of the leading causes of car-bike accidents.

Drivers should never tailgate a bicycle. Following too closely may cause a rider’s attention to be distracted from the road and traffic ahead. Don’t honk your horn. Honking near or behind a bicyclist could startle the rider and cause them to swerve into traffic or lose control.

Be careful when opening your vehicle door. Road widths often force bicyclists to ride close to parked vehicles where they may be injured by an opening door.

In Pennsylvania, it is the law that when passing, you must allow at least

four feet between your vehicle and a bicycle to pass safely.

When in doubt, yield to the bicyclist. Reduce your speed before passing so you have better chances of avoiding a sudden maneuver. Rules for cyclists

Because of the hazards inherent in sharing the road with motor vehicles, bicyclists need to ride cautiously and observe the following safety tips:

• Ride on the roadway or shared pathways, rather than on side-walks;

• Follow the same rules of the road as other roadway users, including riding in the same direction as traffic and following all the same traffic signs and signals;

• Signal all turns;• Wear a bicycle helmet every time

and on every ride;• Be visible by wearing bright colors

during the day, reflective gear in low light conditions, and use head and tail lights at night.

Motorists and Cyclists Can Share the Road Safely Bicycles share same rules and the same rights

NOT JUST CHILD’S PLAY — Statistically, cyclists ages 45–54 suffer the highest fatality rates.

SHARE THE ROADAAA wants you to pedal with more peace of mind. We’ve organized some reliable bicycle safety videos and information at ShareTheRoad.AAA.com.

Remember that respect is a two-way street. Show motorists the same courtesy that you expect from them.

The belt color may have changed quite dramatically over the years in the AAA School Safety Patrol program -- from white to neon orange to today’s fluorescent green called "lectric lime" — but the mission remains the same: To provide a safer environment and leadership opportunities for millions of schoolchildren.

What began as a small, boys-only initiative continues to stand the test of time, celebrating its 95th year in 2015. Since that humble beginning, the AAA-sponsored patrol has expanded into the world’s largest safety program. Today, more than 635,000 male and female patrollers in 33,500 schools nationwide dedicate their time before and after each school day in working with teacher supervisors and adult crossing guards to ensure the safety of their classmates.

"AAA School Safety Patrol plays an important role in helping young pedestrians learn and fulfill responsibilities regarding traffic safety," said AAA Traffic Safety Advocacy Project Manager Rhonda Shah. "Millions of U.S. boys and girls have honorably served their classmates since the program began in the early 1920s, and interest in the program has spread around the world."

The AAA model has been adopted in at least 30 other countries, including England, France, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Annual Safety Patrol Night at Coca-Cola Park

To honor and recognize the valuable contribution Safety Patrollers make in our local schools, AAA East Central sponsored the Annual AAA Safety Patrol Night at Coca-Cola Park on Thursday, May 21.

The Safety Patrollers dedicate their time to guide and protect their fellow students while also fostering citizenship, leadership skills and community involvement. All the safety patrollers who attended the baseball game wore their safety patrol belts and participated in a pre-game parade around the field with Lehigh Valley IronPigs mascots, Ferrous and FeFe, leading the parade.

This year’s Outstanding Safety Patroller was Leah Moll, from Jefferson Elementary School in Allentown. Leah was recognized when she threw out a ceremonial first-pitch prior to the start of the game.

deaths and injuries among 5- to-14-year olds, the age group most at risk for pedestrian injury. AAA provides an array of equipment and educational material to patrollers, including the lectric-lime fluorescent belts, patrol badges and training resources.

The program also teaches lifelong lessons of good citizenship, leadership and responsibility, as evident in the fact that past patrollers have grown up to be U.S. presidents or vice presidents (George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden), astronauts, governors, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices (William Brennan, Stephen Breyer, Warren Burger, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas) and Olympic medalists (Eric Heiden and Edwin Moses). Many patrollers also now serve as educators, executives, physicians and other community leaders throughout the nation.

"AAA clubs across the country are very proud of not only our patrollers, but also school personnel who administer the program and law enforcement officials who contribute to patrollers’ success in local communities," Shah said.

Did you proudly serve on AAA’s School Safety Patrol? To help commemorate the 95th anniversary, AAA members are encouraged to submit their photos to: [email protected].

JULY/AUGUST 201510

With an air of sophisticated grace and design that harkens back to old Florida towns, Disney Springs will be filled with beautiful open-air promenades, flowing springs and waterside charm. The former Downtown Disney will be home to four distinct, outdoor neighborhoods opening in phases: The Landing, Town Center, West Side and The Marketplace, site of the new Village Causeway. With expert masonry, decorative brickwork and graceful arches, it gives a whole new meaning to taking the scenic route. When fully completed in 2016, Disney Springs will double the number of shopping, dining and entertainment venues — from the current 70 to approximately 150.

The Landing, which opened earlier this year, features nationally known restaurateurs including Morimoto Asia, a one-of-a-kind dining experience created by Chef Masaharu Morimoto, of Iron Chef America fame. Exhibition kitchens will showcase the continent’s culinary traditions including street-food stalls, Peking duck carving, and dim sum.

Dockside Margaritas is the perfect spot for guests to relax and unwind. This waterfront margarita bar offers live entertainment and a laid-back tropical decor. Specialty adult beverages include Sunset Margaritas, Orange Grove Rum Runners and Sugar Cane Mojitos.

The Boathouse is an upscale dining experience that features some spectacular floating artwork — dream boats from the '30s, '40s and '50s, and a fleet of Amphicar amphibious autos. Guests will enjoy a gourmet menu featuring steaks, chops, fresh seafood and a raw bar.

It also immerses guests in experiences that go well beyond the cuisine. Diners can listen to live music or take a romantic Captain’s guided tour aboard The Venezia, a beautifully crafted 40-foot Italian Water Taxi featuring chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne.

A high-quality, diverse mix of retailers mingles premium, affordable luxury and fast fashion options. Check out Lilly Pulitzer (the authentic American

resort wear brand), Zara, or Pandora, with a line of exclusive Disney-themed jewelry. Sound Lion offers the latest technology in digital sound and music products, while Art of Shaving features premium grooming essentials. Get expert shaving advice on products and techniques, or make an appointment for a luxurious grooming experience at the Barber Spa.

Havaianas is a Brazilian-based shoe store that offers fashionable flip flops made with the highest quality rubber — with hundreds of styles to choose from. There’s even a “Make Your Own Havaianas” and “Embellish Your Own Havaianas" option, where guests can customize this casual footwear.

Basketball fans of all ages will soon be able to experience the game in a whole new way when they visit The NBA Experience at Disney Springs. The NBA Experience will feature hands-on activities that put visitors of all ages right in the middle of NBA game action. Enjoy immersive NBA video productions and numerous interactive experiences, as well as a restaurant and a retail store.

New jobs, new relationships, going off to college — these are just some of the reasons people have for moving. Millions of Americans move every year and most are pleasantly surprised at how much they can save by moving themselves. As the summer moving season gets into high gear, AAA is pleased to announce that Penske Truck Rental is now a platinum-level AAA Discounts & Rewards Partner.

“We have a longstanding relation-ship with the Penske organization as a discount moving partner for our members,” notes Jim Lehman, president, AAA East Central. “We know our members value Penske’s commitment to customer service and to operating a fleet of high-quality rental trucks to meet their moving needs.”

Whether they are moving across town or across the country, AAA members enjoy savings of up to 20 percent when reserving a Penske truck online at PenskeTruckRental.com and up to 12 percent when buying moving boxes and supplies online from Penske. Plus, Penske is the only national truck

rental company that offers free unlimited miles on one-way rentals anywhere in the United States.

“AAA has been a significant and valued partner with us for the last 16 years,” said Don Mikes, senior vice president of Truck Rental at Penske. We’re pleased to continue and expand our relationship with them.”

For most moves, a moving truck is a must. With one of the newest moving truck rental fleets, Penske Truck Rental provides do-it-yourself movers with clean, well-maintained and reliable rental trucks as well as moving equipment, packing supplies and accessories to keep consumers and businesses moving forward.

Penske recommends reserving your truck at least two weeks in advance of moving day. Use their patented Truck Wizard to calculate what size truck is best for you.

Pack in increments. Start early to avoid the stress of last-minute rushing. It’s OK to leave a box open in case you need something you’ve packed inside it; it’s much easier to tape a box shut on

moving day than it is to pack at the last moment.

As you load the truck, try to keep boxes from each room grouped together. Load the heaviest items onto the truck first to create a sturdy base, then start stacking on top.

Be extra careful driving your moving truck, especially after it’s loaded, and use caution when cornering. In the unlikely event of a breakdown, one call to the Penske 24/7 Roadside Assistance team is all you need.

Finally, create a travel bag for moving day and keep important paperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, beverages and snacks close at hand. Do-it-yourself movers can pick up a free moving guide at any Penske Truck Rental location, or find more moving tips at PenskeTruckRental.com.

Summer vacation season is in full swing, and millions of travelers are getting ready to explore national parks, beach destinations and America’s great cities. While some just like to point the car and drive, most travelers prefer to plan ahead to avoid potential pitfalls on the road.

There are plenty of options for online maps and directions, and for decades the AAA TripTik® has been the go-to resource for motorists. We are excited to announce an enhanced version of these routings, now called AAA TripTik® Travel Planners.

New technology uses real-time map-ping to provide more accurate directions and road conditions, while still including information on points of interest and AAA services along your route. With the summer road-trip season upon us, now’s a perfect time to give it a try.

AAA TripTik® Travel Planners are available free to members at local Auto Club branches. You can also create your own routing at AAA.com or with the free

AAA Mobile app for iPhone or Android systems.

For many travelers, 24/7 access from your personal computer or mobile device offers the best of both worlds — the flexibility you need, coupled with AAA’s expertise, all on demand and at your fingertips. Locate road trip necessities like restaurants, rest areas and service plazas, or use the integrated Drive Trips and Travel Guide content to find must-see and must-do recommendations from AAA travel editors. And every AAA Approved establishment offers the assurance of acceptable cleanliness, comfort and hospitality.

TripTik® Travel Planners let you customize your routing, then save, print or share it with the AAA Mobile app for on-the-go use. Available for iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones, the Android version has just been updated to provide new TripTik® Travel Planner capabilities previously available only for the desktop and iOS versions. These

include streamlined access to saved trips and points of interest, AAA Drive Trips and AAA Travel Guides.

AAA Mobile also feat-ures full-color maps with turn-by-turn narrative direct- ions, plots routes to user-selected addresses and provides voice guidance to your next maneuver. And when you get diverted from your original route, simply shake your mobile device and TripTik® Mobile redraws the route from your current location. Use it to find mem-ber discounts, or the most up-to-date fuel price information. It’s high-tech for the highway, and with detour and construction information updated in real time.

In the event something does go wrong with your vehicle AAA members

can request roadside assistance without even placing a call. The app uses the phone’s GPS technology to transmit the user’s location and details about the vehicle breakdown directly to AAA Roadside Assistance. Members can download the AAA Mobile app at AAA.com/mobile.

Traveling solo is about self-discovery and savoring life’s small pleasures: doing what you like, when you like, without the constraints or compromises of traveling with a companion. Spend an entire day relaxing on the beach, or indulge a newfound passion for art or fine wine. Swap stories with new friends, or immerse yourself in local customs and culture. But why should you have to pay extra for the privilege with costly single supplements?

Now you don’t. Pleasant Holidays has launched a new “Savings For Solos” program where select resorts in Mexico, Caribbean and Costa Rica have waived the traditional Single Supplement with savings of up to 33 percent. It’s an outstanding value for single AAA members with all-inclusive resorts like Dreams Villamagna Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit; Dreams Las Mareas, Costa Rica; and Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Plus, AAA members also receive a $50 per booking

activity voucher valid toward a variety of select activities.

Punta Cana is nestled on the island of Hispaniola’s easternmost tip. Blessed with some of the best beaches on the planet, the sea is clear, flat and warm, and fringed with swaying palms and sugary white sand.

Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana is a AAA Four Diamond resort situated on an uncrowded stretch of powder-white beach. Enjoy the thoughtful amenities of Dreams Unlimited-Luxury® where nearly everything is included. Every top-shelf spirit at five festive bars and lounges, and every gourmet meal at an international array of specialty restaurants like Bordeaux, featuring fine French cooking, El Patio with authentic Mexican fare, Himitsu with the flavors of Asia, and Italian specialties at Portofino.

Enjoy complimentary watersports and theme nights poolside and at the beach, aerobics and dance classes, and a Dominican Tianguis — a weekly market featuring local handicrafts, art and jewelry.

Solo travelers can cruise at no additional charge onboard Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. Uniworld has reduced or waived single supplements on select 2016 departures. Book and deposit at time of reservation to take advantage of these savings.

Itineraries include Tulips & Windmills, Castles Along the Rhine, Venice & The

Gems of Northern Italy, and Paris & Normandy. Paris’ charm is without peer, and the perfect place to begin or end your journey. Stroll along the Seine as evening falls and the lights begin to glimmer on the water. Relax a café in the Latin Quarter for an aperitif while an accordion plays La Vie en Rose. Marvel at Notre Dame's gargoyles, or the endearing white parapets of Sacré-Coeur.

Once onboard your ship, simply unpack and relax, letting the serene Seine carry you through the countryside. Breathe in the fragrance of Monet’s garden in Giverny or walk in the footsteps of Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise, the town where he spent his last days. Immerse yourself in a land, rich in legend, history, and art.

AAA.com/hotels — lowest online rates 72% of the timeTravelers who visit AAA.com to book a hotel room are more

likely to find a better rate there than on other leading websites, according to a 2014 survey. A direct comparison of hotel rates offered on competing sites showed that AAA.com offered the lowest rate available 72 percent of the time.

“This research reconfirms what we have known all along — that AAA consistently offers the best rate and value to travelers,” said Jim Lehman, President of AAA East Central.

“While no company can claim to offer the best rate all the time, the most salient finding is that AAA is the absolute lowest rate winner among the web sites included in the study.”

The independent survey of lodging rates compared rates available on AAA.com to Expedia, Orbitz and AARP. The study chose 10 cities and 10 AAA lodging partner properties within each city. It looked at 2-night weekend (Friday/Saturday) stays and showed that AAA.com had the lowest price (equal to or better than) 72 percent of the time.

Members who book through AAA.com automatically receive the best rates at Best Western; Choice Hotels, including Comfort Inn and Quality; Days Inn; the Hilton family of brands, including Hampton

Inns; Hyatt Hotels; La Quinta Inns and La Quinta Inn & Suites; and the Marriott family of brands, including Renaissance Hotels, Courtyard and Starwood.

“Today’s challenging economy places a tremendous strain on many Americans’ travel budgets,” said Lehman. “AAA.com is responding with access to the some of the best online hotel rates available.”

In addition to the member discounts, the AAA rate requires no pre-payment, is eligible for loyalty program points accrual and is backed by AAA’s Assured Stay® satisfaction guarantee with participating hotel chains.

AAA travel agents

recommend making advance reservations for any hotel stay to ensure the best availability of rooms.

Online users can read descriptions of lodgings and their amenities in the online TourBook,® access Diamond Ratings and see photos of a hotel prior to making reservations. The TourBooks are interactive with AAA’s online mapping products like Internet TripTik® and AAAmaps.com, allowing you to select a hotel based on its proximity to attractions, addresses, events or other venues. Create an electronic routing with door-to-door driving directions, mark your choices right on your map and book your hotel stays directly from the site.

A direct comparison of hotel rates offered on competing web sites in September 2014 showed that AAA.com offered the lowest rate available 72 percent of the time.

The study measured AAA.com against Expedia, Orbitz and AARP.

Ten cities and ten AAA lodging partner properties within each city were chosen to measure. The study looked at 2-night weekend (Friday/Saturday) stays and showed that AAA.com had the lowest price

(equal to or better than) 72 percent of the time.

Dec 2-10 • AAA Member Rate: $2,999Rate is per person (double occupancy), is subject to availability at time of booking and includes flights (Newark-Frankfurt, Munich-Newark), roundtrip airport/hotel transfers, motorcoach transportation, ac-commodations, 13 meals, luggage handling (1 bag/person), taxes/gratuities for included features and services of a AAA Tour Manager in Germany (if minimum-participation goal is met). Additional airline fees for baggage may apply; contact your travel agent for details.

Experience Old World holiday-season tra-ditions! Germany’s many unique Christmas markets and fairs, a tradition begun in the Late Middle Ages, are popular because of their en-chanting festive atmosphere. Aromas of roast-ing chestnuts, savory sausages and freshly baked goods fill the air. Festively decorated, boutique-lined streets and stall-lined town centers brim with locally hand-made, high-quality crafts, toys, wood carv-ings and delicate ornaments.

Enjoy this escorted tour’s convenience and efficiency by spending 4 nights in Nurem-berg and 3 in Munich. You’ll comfortably “settle in,” taking short rides each day to the mar-kets and landmarks surround-ing the 2 base cities; forget about packing and unpacking each day!

Start in Nuremberg, with a tour featuring views of the im-perial castle (Kaiserburg) and the site of the Nuremberg Ral-lies. Then visit your very first Christkindlmarkt.

Over the next few days, set out from Nurem-berg to the historic and charming Bavarian towns (and their Christmas markets, of course!) of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (with its well-pre-served medieval center), Bamberg (its Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site), Bayreuth (best known for its association with composer

Richard Wagner, who lived here for a time) and Regens-burg (also a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Journey to Munich, Bavar-ia’s capital; enjoy a sightsee-ing tour, a Christmas mar-ket and dinner at Ratskellar Restaurant. An excursion to Neuschwanstein, the pal-ace upon which Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle is mod-eled, is a memorable experi-ence. Continue on to Kempten (Germany’s oldest town) and Augsburg (a university town) to explore their holiday mar-kets. Return to Munich for a brewery tour/tasting and a farewell dinner at the famous Hofbräuhaus.

FOR MORE INFORMATIONFor more information on which vehicles are the right fit for you and to access all the free resources AAA offers to senior drivers, visit SeniorDriving.AAA.com.

An age wave is coming to America’s roadways. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) people over 50 accounted for nearly half of all U.S. drivers in 2013. Out of 212.2 million licensed drivers, nearly 93.5 million were 50 or older, an increase of 22 percent since 2003. By 2020, the United States will have more than 40 million licensed drivers 65 and older, about one in four drivers on the road. What’s more, drivers 85 and older represent the fastest growing demographic group, which has nearly doubled from 1.76 million in 1998 to 3.48 million in 2013.

This “silver tsunami” will greatly impact changes in vehicles and infrastructure design to better accommodate the needs of the 50-plus motorist. Vehicle enhancements such as brighter headlights, crash-avoidance technologies, inflatable seatbelts, and technology to prevent gas and brake pedal misapplication will benefit all drivers, but especially older ones. Likewise, infrastructure improvements such as more visible highway signs and

pedestrian countdown signals are also beneficial for seniors.

Aging drivers may also provide some impetus to speed the deployment of autonomous vehicles. Self-driving vehicles could provide greater independence for older consumers with mobility and vision problems.

While our knowledge and experience expand with age, cognitive abilities, range of motion and vision tend to diminish, reducing your ability to execute the complex task of driving. These changes are often so gradual that you may not always be aware of them and as a result, we often fail to compensate for these growing limitations.

When it comes to selecting a new vehicle, knowing what features are available to assist with physical limitations — for any age —can make for a safer, more enjoyable ride. That’s one reason why AAA launched “Smart Features for Older Drivers” in partnership with the University of Florida’s Institute for Mobility, Activity and Participation.

Smart Features for Older Drivers helps mature drivers and their families

minimize their driving discomforts, enhance their abilities and promote a lifetime of safe driving. Available at SeniorDriving.AAA.com this free resource lists numerous vehicle features that optimize older driver safety and comfort, like auto-dimming mirrors and larger displays, and notes current vehicles that offer those features.

Users can explore their individual needs through an interactive online

widget and investigate technologies like Reverse Monitoring or Emergency Response systems that offer quick assistance to drivers in the case of a medical emergency or collision. Even minor adjustments like lower door thresholds and leather or vinyl seats can greatly ease vehicle exit and entry.

Smart Features for Older Drivers addresses a wide variety of conditions commonly associated with aging, including changes in vision, height, hearing, and fine motor coordination. A variety of adaptive features show you how to help compensate for physical changes, or simply how to make the vehicle you own fit you more comfortably.

AAA Helps Mature Drivers Find Vehicles That Fit Their NeedsNearly half of U.S. drivers are over 50 years of age

GET THE FACTS — SeniorDriving.AAA.com is designed to help senior drivers on the road for as long as safely possible.

Automakers are ramping up their efforts to integrate more and more technology into their vehicles, and consumers may need to rethink their approach to the car-shopping process. Just a few years ago, it was mostly about making sure the vehicle was mechanically sound, that the ride and handling were good and the vehicle had everything you needed to suit your lifestyle.

Now there’s the added task of learning about all of the high-tech safety systems and infotainment features. And since most automakers use proprietary systems, it can be overwhelming to make an informed decision.

Consumers typically want in-vehicle technology that is easy to operate and makes the drive safer and more enjoy-able. Manufacturers, for example, have been consolidating all the secondary functions of a car, from navigation to music to climate control, into one central touch screen. But consumers often find these systems are too complicated and difficult to use.

These features aren’t just cool — they are useful and improve safety. Even the most tech-challenged drivers can use and appreciate them.

Adaptive Cruise Control: Using a radar system embedded in the front fascia or grille, adaptive cruise control maintains a preset distance between you and the car in front of you. In some cases, it’s capable of bringing the car to a full stop in order to maintain that distance.

Forward Collision Mitigation: Typically employing the adaptive cruise control system’s radar, forward collision mitigation systems monitor objects on the road ahead and measure the data against your own car’s speed and heading. If a collision is deemed likely or imminent, the system springs into action. The simplest type merely sounds an alarm, perhaps vibrating the steering wheel or seat as well, but there are also more advanced systems that can automatically brake the car to a full stop.

Park Assist: The most basic form of parking assist is a set of proximity sensors (either rear or front and rear) that beep when you’re about to hit something. Nissan goes one step further with its Around View Monitor. The system stitches together views from four different cameras to offer a bird’s-eye view of the area around the car. Increasingly, though, automakers are offering self-parking systems that can find a suitable space and park the car automatically.

Adaptive Headlights: Headlights that swivel around curves in response to steering input allow drivers to spot a hard-to-see object on a dark, curvy road. As of the 2014 model year, they were standard on 14 percent of models and optional on 22 percent.

Automatic Start-Stop Engine: A system that automatically turns the engine off when you brake to a stop, and

Americans are having their per-sonal information exposed at record-breaking rates. Hackers have exposed the personal identifying information of more than 110 million Americans — roughly half of the nation’s adults — in the past 12 months.1

Once your information is stolen, it can be used to open bank accounts, forge checks, and even take out loans — all in your name. Restoring your good name and credit record can be a long and frustrating process. Some common-sense precautions can help protect your sensitive information:

• Password-protect all accounts.• Do not share your password, and

With summer driving season in full swing, motorists are busy planning family vacations and summer road trips. Most drivers appreciate the benefits of winterizing their vehicles in the fall, but far fewer understand that hot weather can be just as damaging to your vehicle. Higher temperatures accelerate wear and tear, as fluids and lubricants break down more quickly.

Before you hit the road this summer, make sure your preparation includes “summerizing” to get your car in shape for hot weather driving.

Windshield wipers — Wiper blades play an important role in increasing visibility. Replace every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering.

Check the tires — Check the tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, which could indicate the need for a wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

Keep it clean — Give your car a good washing from top to bottom. Use a product specifically made for automobiles. Waxing not only protects

the finish but also makes subsequent washing easier. Check for rust spots and paint chips and have them repaired as soon as possible.

Time for a change — A good rule of thumb is that a change of season equals a change of oil. Changing your car’s oil and filter as often as recommended in your owner’s manual will ensure that your car operates at peak efficiency.

Get a tune-up — As part of the 21st century tune-up on today’s vehicles, the following systems should be inspected: battery, charging and starting, engine mechanical, powertrain control (including onboard diagnostic checks), fuel, ignition and emissions.

Check battery — Hot weather can shorten the life of a car’s battery. Weak or old batteries should be tested and replaced if necessary. Clean any accumulated corrosion from the terminals.

Check all fluids —Fluids that require attention include engine oil, power steering fluid, brake and transmission fluids, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. If you notice any fluid

leaks or puddles or stains under your vehicle, it is a good idea to have it inspected.

Check belts and hoses — A belt that fails can affect the electrical system, air conditioning and power steering, as well as the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps that appear to be in marginal condition may need to be replaced.

Check brakes and suspension — Faulty brakes can be dangerous so a thorough brake inspection should include brake linings, rotors and drums

and fluids. Other warning signs of a faulty suspension are if your vehicle rolls or sways on turns, the front end dives when braking, or bounces or slides sideways on a winding and rough road.

A new AAA survey reveals that one in three Americans do not believe the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new vehicle window sticker accurately reflects the fuel economy they achieve when driving. To assess the accuracy of this perception, AAA performed an analysis of data collected on the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov website, along with laboratory and real-world vehicle testing, and found that driver behaviors and environmental conditions, rather than vehicle shortcomings, are likely responsible for most fuel economy variances.

“For years, we’ve heard that drivers question whether the fuel economy rating for their vehicle is accurate,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director, Automotive Engineering and Repair. “In the interest of our members, AAA aimed to address this issue with a multi-phase testing series designed to uncover the real reasons behind fuel economy variations.”

AAA engineers conducted a comprehensive analysis of 37,000 records submitted to the EPA, representing over 8,400 vehicle make, model and year combinations, to identify trends in real-world fuel economy. Surprisingly, among the self-reported data, eight out of 10 drivers reported fuel economy that was higher than the combined city and highway EPA mileage rating for their vehicle. Additional findings include:

Owners of vehicles equipped with manual transmissions reported 17

percent higher fuel economy than EPA ratings.

Owners of diesel-fuel vehicles, including light trucks, reported 20 percent higher fuel economy than EPA ratings.

Truck owners with gasoline-fuel V-8 engines reported fuel economy five percent higher than EPA ratings, while owners of turbocharged V-6 engines reported fuel economy that was nine percent lower.

Owners of sedans with V-6 engines reported a nine percent higher fuel economy than EPA ratings, while owners of turbocharged four-cylinder engines reported fuel economy that was four percent lower.

Minivan owners reported real-world fuel economy that was equal to or slightly lower than EPA ratings.

“The vast majority of drivers that submit their vehicle’s fuel economy to the EPA report mileage that beats the window sticker rating,” continued Nielsen. “Although self-reported data has limitations, it’s encouraging to see real-world fuel economy that more closely aligns with, or even exceeds, automaker promises.”

In conducting this analysis, AAA engineers identified a list of vehicles that were frequently reported as failing to achieve the EPA’s mileage rating. The majority of these vehicles, including the scrutinized Hyundai and Kia models, have since been retested and, in some cases, mileage ratings were revised. AAA

selected three additional vehicles – a 2014 full-size pickup truck, a 2014 large sedan and a 2012 medium sedan – for further testing.

In partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, AAA tested the vehicles independently to verify the fuel economy. Over the course of several weeks, testing was conducted using a certified dynamometer and on the streets of Southern California. Test results from of all three vehicles confirmed the EPA mileage rating was accurate, leaving AAA to conclude that driving behaviors, vehicle condition, driving environment and terrain are likely responsible for most deviations from EPA ratings that consumers experience.

“In addition to logging hundreds of miles in various driving environments, the research team put the vehicles through EPA-specified testing designed to mimic the real-world conditions, including city, highway and aggressive driving,” said Megan McKernan, manager of the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center. “The findings indicate that while vehicles tested are capable of achieving the EPA rating, a driver’s real-world mileage will vary based on driving style.”

In the next phase of AAA’s fuel economy testing series, to be released in late 2015, researchers will measure the impact that specific driving behaviors, such as acceleration rates and idle time, have on an individual driver’s fuel economy. In the meantime, AAA recommends that drivers take a closer look at their driving habits to understand the role they play in the fuel efficiency of their vehicle.

“If you drive aggressively, with heavy acceleration, hard braking and driving at higher speeds, your fuel economy is going to suffer,” continued Nielsen. “Driving just five miles per hour above 50 is like paying an additional 19 cents per gallon for gasoline.”

One in Three Americans Doubt Accuracy of Fuel Economy RatingsAAA analysis, test results reveal that drivers, not automakers, responsible for shortcomings

Summertime is prime time for road repair. As you navigate around town, or to a vacation destination, be mindful of the hardworking highway crews along the roadside.

Earlier this year, PennDOT ann-ounced its #Slow4Zone social media campaign, which spotlights department employees and reminds drivers why it is important to pay attention and slow down in work zones.

PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said, “Work on our roadways is essential to keep people and commerce flowing, but drivers need to remember that it isn’t just equipment that they see in work zones – there are people. Work zones may be a temporary inconvenience, but these workers deserve our full attention and safest driving.”

Preliminary PennDOT data shows that 24 people were killed in work-zone crashes in 2014, eight more than in 2013. Since 1970, 85 PennDOT employees have died in the line of duty.

Additionally, the same data shows there were 1,841 crashes in work zones last year, a slight decrease from the 1,851 crashes in 2013. Over the five-year period, there were 10,586 work-zone crashes and 128 fatalities in those crashes.

In addition to crash data from police reports, PennDOT monitors work-zone safety with internal reports. In 2014,

there were 131 reported intrusions in PennDOT work zones, 92 of which nearly caused injury to employees or caused damage to equipment, and 21 of which caused fleet or equipment damage. Of those intrusions, 18 resulted in injuries to PennDOT employees.

As of March 10 this year, there have been seven work-zone intrusions, with one resulting in employee injury, four

causing damage to vehicles or equipment and two causing no damage or injuries.

In addition to driving safely to protect highway workers, state law requires drivers to increase their visibility and obey work-zone speed limits. Drivers who don’t turn on their headlights in posted work zones face a $25 fine. Also, motorists caught driving 11 mph or more above the posted speed limit in active work zones automatically will lose their license for 15 days.

To further underscore the im-portance of the lives of people working on the state’s transportation system, PennDOT’s #Slow4Zone initiative will feature employees from across the state who have witnessed or been injured in work-zone crashes, or who have a message for motorists. The campaign emphasizes that each employee is a mother, youth mentor or family member who wants to get home safely each day.

Work Zone Safety WORK ZONE SAFETY TIPSIf you encounter work zones, please keep the following tips in mind for your safety and the safety of highway workers:• Drive the posted work-zone speed

limit.• Stay alert and pay close attention to

signs and flaggers.• Turn on your headlights if signs

instruct you to do so.• Maintain a safe distance around

vehicles. Don’t tailgate.• Use four-way flashers when stopped

or traveling slowly.• Avoid distractions and give your full

attention to the road.• Always buckle up.• Expect the unexpected.• Be patient.

Pennsylvania’s work zone safety laws are designed to

protect both highway workers and motorists.

Headlights On. All motorists are required to travel with their

headlights turned on in all posted work zones, not just active work

zones. It is necessary for drivers in vehicles with daytime running lights

to turn on their headlights in order to activate their taillights.

Speed-Monitoring Devices. Inter- state work zones with a project cost exceeding $300,000 will have a speed-monitoring device to alert motorists of their speed prior to entering the work zone.

ACTIVE WORK ZONESPosting of Active Work Zones. Act-

ive work zones must be designated as such to notify motorists when they enter and leave the work zone. A white flashing light attached to the “Active Work Zone When Flashing” sign will indicate an active

work zone. The flashing light will only be activated when workers are present and turned off when workers are not present.

Fifteen-Day Loss of License for Driving Dangerously. Motorists caught driving 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit in an active work zone, or who are involved in a crash in an active work zone and are convicted for failing to drive at a safe speed, automatically will lose their license for 15 days.

Fines Doubled/Jail Time Increased. Fines for certain traffic violations – including speeding, driving under the influence, and failure to obey traffic devices – are doubled for active work zones. Also, the law provides for up to five years of additional jail time for individuals convicted of homicide by vehicle for a crash that occurred in an active work zone.

In 2014, 377 suspensions were imposed on motorists for work-zone violations.
