From picture books with beloved characters, to chapter books that motivate beginning readers, to activity books and non-fiction books that engage and inspire, this catalog will show you how our list has something for everyone. Here are some highlights:

Sure to be a bedtime favorite with the preschool set, award-winning author

and illustrator Roslyn Schwartz presents The Vole Brothers. Giggles are

guaranteed as readers follow the silly antics of these ravenous rodents in

search of their next meal.

For middle-grade readers, we’ve got Book Two in the alliterative adventure

series Sir Seth Thistlethwaite by author Richard Thake. In Sir Seth Thistlethwaite

and the Kingdom of Caves, errant knights Sir Seth and Sir Ollie are off on an

imaginative quest to stop the takeover of the Queendom of Claire. The

delicious wordplay and memorable characters will have kids reading aloud.

Following up on the highly praised Learn to Speak Music is Learn to Speak

Dance by Ann-Marie Williams. Dancers and fans alike will enjoy getting the

inside spin on dance and experimenting with their own moves, while learning

the art of choreography, costume design, lighting, promotion, and how to

stage a show.

In On an American Day, Vol. 1, talented writer Rona Arato does it again. Like

her previous books in the On a Day Story Voyages series, Arato transports

readers back in time with short pieces of historical fiction. In this book,

her setting is the United States between the years 1750–1899. Readers will

follow along as the nation grows from a small, colonial outpost to a unified

country that stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Celebrating our 35th anniversary, our Fall books reflect the wide range of

talent the authors, illustrators, editors, and designers at Owlkids possess.

Let us know what you think!

“Roslyn Schwartz is a virtuoso of the picture book form. In all her books, but most especially in the Mole Sisters stories, she demonstrates how minimal text, tiny pictures, and hilariously unambitious images can convey worlds of meaning and character. Playful, intelligent, and peopled with unforgettable characters, Schwartz’s titles are a significant, inimitable contribution to Canadian children’s literature.”

~ Vicky Metcalf Jury

TheVoleBrothersBy Roslyn Schwartz

From the creator of the beloved Mole Sisters comes an irresistible tale about two ravenous rodents, wanted for snacking on too many strawberries, daisies, and other garden plants. And after these rodents chomp and chew all the plants they can find around their new home — a drainpipe in an urban alley — they’re still hungry! So hungry, in fact, they could even eat a cat!

Using an imaginative paper bag disguise and a natural talent for tunneling, this mischievous pair sets off in pursuit of a feline-sized feast — and finds a slice of pepperoni pizza. But the vagrant voles are left empty-handed — and empty-tummied — when a greedy crow and an army of ants invade their picnic.

Chock full of silly antics and suspense, young children will root for these insatiable characters as they continue on their quest for food. And readers will celebrate along with them when the Vole Brothers’ perseverance pays off when they are tossed into a garden full of luscious strawberries — a very happy ending if you’re a hungry vole!

ROSLyN SCHWARTz is the author of the internationally acclaimed Mole Sisters series. In addition to the ten titles in the Mole Sisters series, she has published two other picture books, three adult books, and released two animated films with the National Film Board. In 2003, Schwartz received the prestigious Vicky Metcalf Award for her body of work. She lives in Montreal.

Since discovering the Canadian Flyer, a magical time-traveling sled, in Emily’s attic, Matt and Emily have outrun dinosaurs in the Alberta badlands,

evaded slave catchers on the Underground Railroad, and seen the last spike driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway. In Halifax Explodes!, Emily and Matt land on Citadel Hill in Halifax, Nova Scotia — just as the Mont Blanc, a ship laden with explosives, explodes in the harbor!

In the chaos that follows, the two friends find a small dog wandering around with Tim, a dazed young soldier who has just returned from fighting overseas in World War I. Can Emily and Matt help Tim find the dog’s owner, his niece, Carolyn? What if she’s been hurt in the blast and needs help? And what is Tim and Carolyn’s connection to Hilda Slayter, the Canadian woman Matt and Emily met aboard the Titanic?

About Sir Seth ThistlethwaiteThis chapter-book series chronicles the adventures of 10-year-old buddies Seth Thistlethwaite and Ollie Everghettz. The two buddies, who’ve dubbed themselves the Mighty Knights of Right & Honor, are out to save the world — or solve even smaller dilemmas — embarking on some imaginative “daily knightly” adventures. The tongue-twisting humor, action, and adventure of each story makes this series both challenging and appealing — especially to boys.

BookTwoSirSethThistlethwaiteandtheKingdomoftheCavesBy Richard ThakeIllustrated by Vince Chui

Having recently returned from their journey to Thatchwych in book one of this series, Sir Seth and Sir Ollie are doing some well-

deserved relaxing on a raft in the local pond. That’s when they notice the water level is suspiciously low. And there’s a strange bubbling coming from the pond, too. Could it be a sea serpent? A strange spell? Or is someone stealing the water?

What follows is the second animated, alliterative adventure for this knightly duo, which takes the boys underground to the Queendom of Claire. Claire, they discover, has a much bigger problem than just a leaky waterhole. It is being held hostage by the evil Ooz and his dino Grak; they have blocked off the only river in the realm and, unless Ooz is named ruler of the land, Claire will go bone-dry.

Our Mighty Knights leap into action, but is this queendom due to become a kingdom? With their new ally, the impulsive princess of Claire, Sundra Neeth, looking like she may play right into Ooz’s hands, it just might.

RICHARD THAKE has finally found the time to write the Sir Seth series — a thinly disguised glimpse into his own childhood adventures exploring the Don River Valley

and The Beach areas of Toronto. He lives in Newcastle, ON.

VINCE CHUI has worked on character design for video games for Sega, Xbox 360, and PS3. He lives in Toronto.

LearntoSpeakDanceAGuidetoCreating,Performing,

andPromotingYourMovesBy Ann-Marie Williams • Illustrated by Jeff Kulak

Watching a flashy music video or an episode of So You Think You Can Dance probably makes most people a little shy about their dancing skills, but we all know how to dance. After all, dance is just a mashup of everyday movement and imagination. And while a musician might learn how to play piano or guitar, a dancer’s instrument is the human body. We just need to explore the unique, artistic voice inside that instrument — and Learn to Speak Dance is all about helping kids do just that!

Drawing upon years of experience as a dancer and dance teacher, author Ann-Marie Williams exposes every aspect of the world of dance — from different dance styles from around the world to tips on choreography, costume design, performance, staging, and even managing a potential career. She’s also brought along the expert opinions of a number of other dancers, set designers, choreographers, and reality TV judges, and all of them share great tips and anecdotes throughout. But there’s no need to get stage fright — Learn to Speak Dance isn’t an audition, a lecture, or even a class. It’s simply a revelation of just how far your own two feet can move you…if you let them.

ANN-MARIE WILLIAMS is the director of the Movement Lab, a dance school for kids. She is a certified ballet teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance and often contributes to The Dance Current. She lives in Toronto.

JEFF KULAK is an award-winning designer-illustrator. From his studio, a converted room in a former nunnery, he creates art for magazines and theater posters. He lives in Montreal.

About Learn to SpeakThe Learn to Speak books give preteen readers a behind-the-scenes look at various fields in the arts. These are not rigid “how-to” guides, but instead take a DIy approach to discovery and self-expression. The focus is on having fun and debunking many of the myths that surround artistic communities.

OfftoClassIncredibleandUnusualSchoolsaroundtheWorldBy Susan Hughes

When North American kids picture a school, odds are they see rows of desks, stacks of textbooks, and linoleum-tiled

hallways. They probably don’t picture boats, tents, or train platforms — but there are schools on boats, and in tents, and on train platforms. There are green schools, mobile schools, and even treehouse schools. There’s a whole world of unusual schools out there!

But the most amazing thing about these schools isn’t their location or what they look like. It’s that they provide a place for students who face some of the toughest environmental and cultural challenges, and live some of the most unique lifestyles, to learn. Education is not readily available for kids everywhere, and many communities are strapped for the resources that would make it easier for kids to go to school. In short, it’s not always easy getting kids off to class — but people around the world are finding creative ways to do it.

In Off to Class, readers will travel to India, Burkina Faso, and Brazil; to Russia, China, Uganda, and a dozen other countries, to visit some of these incredible schools, and, through personal interviews conducted by author Susan Hughes, meet the students who attend them, too. And their stories aren’t just inspiring; they’ll also get you to think about school and the world in a whole new way.

SUSAN HUGHES is a writer and editor, and has been writing both fiction and non-fiction children’s books for over twenty years. Her book Canada Invents was shortlisted for the Hackmatack Award, as well as the Red Cedar Book Award. She lives in Toronto.

OnanAmericanDayVolume1StoryVoyagesthroughHistory1750–1899By Rona Arato Illustrated by Ben Shannon

What better way for young readers to truly understand another era than to spend a day in the life of

another child? On an American Day Volume 1 uses nine extraordinary pieces of historical fiction — covering American history from 1750–1899 — to give young readers an intimate look at life in another place and time.

On an American Day Volume 1 contains stories that are bound to be both familiar and surprising to readers. They will meet characters living through commonly referenced historical events like the Civil War, the California gold rush, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. But author Rona Arato also sheds light on some lesser-known milestones and achievements. From the early days of Berea College to the opening of the Perkins School for the Blind and the story of Chicago’s Hull House, the book speaks to the broad and mysterious catalog of America’s history.

Through these carefully researched and engaging stories, a complex and fascinating portrait of a nation emerges, told through a child’s everyday life activities. Detailed backgrounder pages accompany each story, using facts, maps, photos, and illustrations to bring readers further into history.

RONA ARATO, a former teacher, is an award-winning children’s author with a strong interest in the field of human rights. From 1994 to 1998, she was an interviewer for Survivors of the Shoah, a Steven Spielberg project that recorded the histories of Holocaust survivors. She is the author of Ice Cream Town, Courage and Compassion, and On a Canadian Day, among others. She lives in Toronto.

BEN SHANNON’s illustrious career extends from magazines and newspapers to advertising and television to books and comics. He has done work for Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, Adidas, American Eagle Outfitters, Motown Records, and DC Comics among others. He lives with his wife and young daughter in Toronto.

About On a Day Story VoyagesThese themed collections of historical short fiction chronicle children’s days in different time periods, in different parts of the world. The compelling stories open up a window onto places and times vastly different in so many ways from a modern child’s world — yet with many familiar emotions, too. Each story is accompanied by factual information about the historical period.
