Fair trade is a better deal for everyone; the producers get paid fair money for their products, their communities are enhanced. The seller can be confident their product is of good quality. The buyer can purchase knowing it is from a reputable source, with welfare standards for the producer. The official statement is “Fair-trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fair-trade.”The fair trade logo means that the product meets fair trade the standards above. Always look for this mark when purchasing fair trade. The mark was adopted in 2002. The mark is widely thought to show a person with their arm in the air but some have other ideas.....A parrot...A road to a brighter future....

So what’s all the fuss about? Isn’t fair trade just another scam to make you buy the product, while not actually caring about the producer, just profit? This couldn't be further from the truth. Fair trade is all about improving the lives of the producers who make the products. Fair trade item meet certain standards of economical, social and environmental development. The communities receive a ‘fair trade premium’ (extra money from sales) the fair trade standards enable the community to make decisions on these funds are used in their area. Also, producer can be sure they are getting the right price for their produce. No fixed scales and no unfair trading.

You can recognise fair trade products from the fair trade mark. A fair trade product is one that abides by the fair trade standards. Although not as widely available as we would like, fair trade is available from many shops, the leading being The Co-operative and Oxfam. Others are Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, M and S, The Body S Shop, Boots and many more.
Many different fair trade products are available and more each day. You can buy anything from socks to drums, from Mohican hats to dragon incense holders. Buying fair trade means you know that the workers are well treated (see ‘Home’ and ‘Benefits’ for more info) You will probably have to pay a little bit more than comparable non-fair trade items, but surely its worth it to give you piece of mind the producers were not ill treated.
