FAST Way To

Improve Yourself

Sumirtene has worked in Singapore for

the last eight months. She is happy as

she enjoys a good relationship with her

employer. She said talking and sharing her

concerns with her employer help them to

know each other better.

While maintaining a good relationship is

essential in any work environment, this is

especially important for foreign domestic

workers (FDWs) as you also live with your

employer.

Show that you Care

There are many ways of showing concern.

For example, asking simple questions like

“How’s your day?”, “Have you eaten?” or

offering a glass of water on a warm day are

ways to show your concern. Such gestures

may seem ‘small’ but it goes a long way to

show that you care for them.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Being honest is very important. Do not

be afraid to admit when you have made

a mistake. It is also useful to discuss the

problem with your employer and use the

opportunity to learn from your mistakes.

Mr Sim, an FDW employer, agrees and said,

“For us, the most important factors are

honesty, initiative and being able to care and

love our two young children.”

Earn Trust and Respect

Trust has to be earned and it takes time and

effort. For example, if you are invited to join

the family for outings, take the opportunity

to participate and interact with them.

Through such activities and daily interaction,

your employer will get to know you better.

Slowly, they will trust you with the care of the

home and family.

Have a Positive Attitude

Have a positive work attitude by showing

that you are keen to work and learn. Listen

and carry out your employer’s instructions

carefully. Always ask your employer if you do

not understand.

If you are unhappy about any issues,

you should also bring it up for discussion

with your employer in a calm and respectful

manner.

Develop a Good Relationship with Your Employer

“I will do my work to the best of my ability

so that my employer is happy. If I observe

that something is wrong and my employer

is unhappy, I will ask him about it. Likewise,

if I’m unhappy about certain issues,

I will open up and speak about it,”

says Slordelyn, from Philippines, who has

worked in Singapore for 13 years.

Building a good relationship takes time

and effort. Both you and your employ-

er need to work together to develop a

harmonious relationship. This will defi -

nitely help create a pleasant and enjoyable

working environment.

How do you usually use the money? As this

is your hard-earned money, it is important

that you spend it wisely.

Do you know you can ask your employer

to pay your monthly salary directly into your

bank account in Singapore?

Keeping the money in a bank is safe and

convenient. It also allows you to keep a

record of your money and expenses.

Many FDWs send money home regularly.

The fastest way to send money home

is through remittance companies. One

such service is the Western Union

Money Transfer service where money

can be sent to 200 countries including

Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and India.

Through Western Union, one can send

money either over the counter where

the recipient abroad collects the money

over the counter within 15 minutes or

through the Direct To Bank (D2B) service

where money is deposited into the recipient’s

bank account.

You can call Western Union at 6336 2000

FAST graduates with some of their young supporters

Ms Isnaini Busaini, 30, from Indonesia is a top

FAST graduate in Elderly Care (Advanced).

She has worked for the same employer in

the last eight years. But fi ve years ago, her

employer’s mother suffered a stroke. “I al-

ways accompany my Amah to the clinic for

physiotherapy. I wanted to know more about

looking after her. The clinic’s nurse encour-

aged me to join the course,” she said.

Ms Isnani’s employer also supported her in

taking up other courses that might be use-

ful to her. She is now attending a course in

computer and English language. When she

The FDW graduates were the ‘stars’ of the

day. They sang, danced and were happy they

passed the FAST (Foreign Domestic Worker

Association for Skills Training) courses in

elderly care, cooking and music.

These FDWs were part of the 200 graduates

who proudly went on stage to receive their

certifi cates from Guest of Honour, Mr Hawazi

Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for

Manpower on 29 October 2006.

The graduating FDWs’ employers were

also among the audience. An employer, Mr

Christopher Rajappan, said, “I wanted Siti

to build up her skills and improve herself and

she was also interested in doing the course in

elderly care.”

Siti Bintari, from Surabaya, said she knew only

a few words of English when she started work

here. However, the course instructors used

simple English and Bahasa Indonesia which

she can understand. “Much of it is practical

demonstrations, so I had no problems learning.

It is a good course that can help my work.”

In his welcome address, Mr Anthony Sia, the

Vice-President of FAST said the organisation

believes acquiring new skills will not only

improve the FDWs’ work prospects but they

are also likely to be happier and fi nd it easier

to adapt to Singapore’s environment.

Mr Hawazi congratulated the graduates. He

also shared some good news with all the

FAST graduates. Next year, FAST will offer

bursaries and scholarships to outstanding

FDW graduates.

wanted to buy a computer for her studies,

her employer paid half the cost and paid all

her courses’ fees.

Ms Isnaini advised all FDWs, “Take the

opportunity to improve not only to benefi t

yourself, but also the family you are working

for as well as society. Use your off days to

study.”

“I hope to save enough while work-

ing here and later open a small business

when I return to Indonesia. I am thank-

ful that I have employers who are nice

and caring.”

The FAST Way to Improve Yourself

Ms Teodora Molina Millano

(far right), is the top graduate in

the FAST Elderly Care course.

Ms Cynthia Long, Head of

Sunlove-Hougang Rehab

Centre, who organised the

course, said that Teodora has

shown outstanding perform-

ance during the training. Teodora is one of the most

promising students who can easily qualify for a schol-

arship for further studies.

Many employers are happy to send their FDWs for

courses to improve themselves.

Take the case of Jennifer Guntinias, who topped her

FAST Cooking course. She did not know how to cook

when she came here two years ago.

She said, “When I told my mum I wanted to attend the

cooking course, she was very happy and did not even mind

giving me an extra day off to attend classes. My employer is

now encouraging me to take up computer courses!”

Top Graduates Share their Success Stories

Some Courses Available

Chinese Cooking - FDWs will learn to prepare

two Chinese dishes during the three-hour

course.

Elderly Care - FDWs will learn how to look after

the elderly from the session.

Music - FDWs can choose from a variety of

music programmes, such as guitar, piano, vocal

(singing) or theory.

Bapak Sim (di belakang) berkata pembantu rumah

asingnya, Yati, ada sikap positif dan menjaga

anak-anaknya dengan baik.

Sumirtene telah bekerja di Singapura sejak

lapan bulan yang lalu. Dia sangat senang

bekerja karena menikmati hubungan yang

baik dengan majikannya. Karena bisa ber-

cakap dengan majikannya serta meluahkan

isi hatinya, Sumirtene dan majikannya bisa

berkenalan sesama lain dengan baik.

Mengutamakan perhubungan yang baik

memang penting didalam persekitaran

pekerjaan, terutamanya untuk pembantu

rumah asing (Foreign Domestic Worker,

ejaan ringkas FDW) karena anda juga ting-

gal bersama majikan dan keluarga mereka.

Tunjukkan Keprihatinan

anda

Ada banyak cara untuk

menunjukkan keprihatinan.

Misalnya, bertanyakan

soalan seperti “Anda

apa kabar hari ini?” atau

“Anda sudah makan?”

atau menghidangkan

segelas air diwaktu hari

yang panas merupakan

cara-cara yang bisa me-

nunjukkan keprihatinan

anda. Kelakuan sebegini

mungkin dipandang kecil

tetapi maknanya sangat

besar.

Kejujuran adalah yang

Terbaik

Bersikap jujur sangat

penting. Jangan takut untuk mengaku jika

sudah berbuat kesalahan. Adalah sangat

berguna untuk berdiskusi masalah yang di-

hadapi dengan majikan anda supaya bisa

mempelajari dari kesilapan anda.

Bapak Sim, seorang majikan pembantu

rumah asing berkata, “ Untuk kami, faktor

yang paling penting ialah kejujuran, inisiatif

serta bisa menjaga dan sayang kedua-dua

anak kami.”

Memperolehi Kepercayaan serta

Kehormatan

Kepercayaan mesti diperolehi dan memerlu-

kan masa serta usaha. Misalnya, jika anda

diundang keluar bersama keluarga majikan,

gunakan sempatan in i untuk bergaul

dengan mereka.

Melalui kegiatan ha-

rian, majikan anda bisa

mengenali anda dengan

lebih dekat. Perlahan-

lahan, mereka akan

mempercayakan anda

untuk menjaga rumah

serta keluarga mereka.

Mempunyai Sikap

Positif

Tunjukkan sikap be-

kerja yang positif

dengan bersikap sema-

ngat untuk bekerja serta

belajar. Dengarkan dan

ikuti perintah majikan

dengan teliti. Selalu ber-

tanya dengan majikan

jika anda tidak mengerti.

Jika anda kurang senang terhadap sesuatu

isu, anda harus berbincang dengan majikan

anda secara tenang dan hormat.

“Saya selalu bekerja sebaik-baiknya supaya

majikan saya senang. Jika saya rasa ada

perkara yang tidak disenangi dan majikan

saya rasa kurang senang, saya akan bertanya

sama dia. Begitu juga jika saya kurang senang

dengan sesuatu perkara, saya akan berbicara

mengenainya,” kata Slordelyn, warga Filipina

yang sudah bekerja di Singapura selama 13

tahun.

Membina hubungan yang baik memerlukan

masa dan usaha. Anda serta majikan anda per-

lu bekerjasama membina hubungan harmonis.

Ini bisa membantu menyediakan persekitaran

pekerjaan yang lebih nyaman dan senang.

Sumirtene menunjukkan prihatin untuk majikannya

dengan cara-cara sederhana seperti selalu berada disisi

jika majikan perlukannya.

Pembantu rumah asing menjadi ‘bintang’ sehari.
