Alok SinghCHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICERMARKET UPDATE

2

Last year markets globally were engulfed in lot of macro head winds resulting in increased volatility.

With US Fed increasing the policy rate, the rise in interest rate was one of the prominent concerns which market faced. Domestically

also last year RBI was in a hike mode. However, currently because of growth concerns along with low/manageable level of inflation US

Fed has turned more accommodative. Domestically also RBI changed in policy stance and reduced the Repo rate by 25bps with clear

indications that it will further look to lower rate if the incoming data suggest weakness in the economy.

The rise of trade tension between US and China was another thing which imposed pressure on the markets. This situation had a

potential to slow down the global economy with probably china having an higher impact. The recent trade talks between USA and China

indicates that both the economies will end up having an amicable solution to current situation.

The global commodities, especially crude oil has witnessed a huge surge in price during the first half of the year. This resulted in margin

pressures for business and market becoming worried about the future growth and valuations. In the recent time, global commodity

prices have eased off which in turn ease of the related concerns.

So, in a way all those factors which induced volatility in the financial markets have moved towards the positive side. This gave the

positive momentum to the market. If we specially talk about the Indian Equity market, the mid and small Caps significantly

underperformed the large Caps as illustrated in the table below. Actually, this amongst the sharpest underperformance we have seen

over the last 15 years. However, with improvements in macro scenario and valuations are looking reasonable post correction. The mid

and small caps have outperformed the large caps significantly in last one month.

Index 1yr Return Feb18 to Feb19 Last 1 month 7th Feb19 to 7th March19

NIFTY 50 4.40% 0.85%

NIFTY Midcap Index -10.41% 4.82%

NIFTY Small Cap Index -28.22% 6.87%

Source : bloomberg

Many market participants may also attribute the recent up move to the pre-election rally, similar to what happened before the general

elections in past. We believe that since the valuations and future growth outlook is positive, the market is trying to correct the

divergence which appeared between large caps and mid & small caps last year.

RBI believes that an output gap is opening up. Expenditure side details reveal that the slowdown is due to the slower growth in

investment and private consumption. The downward revision in growth and under-shooting inflation indicates scope for RBI to further

reduce the repo rate in the coming months. We expect the next repo rate cut of 25bps in April 2019. Headwinds for growth in FY20

would be the external atmosphere where global growth is expected to slow. However, on the domestic front, tailwinds for growth are

expected to emerge out of the pro-consumption policy push laid out by the Interim Budget (PM-KISAN a targeted income support

scheme for small and marginal farmers; reduction in income tax burden for the middle class). Meanwhile other policy measures – such

as GST cuts is likely to increase affordability for the housing sector. On the other hand, we assume a continuity of the current reform

push, leading to a beneficial effect on the funding of India’s growth from the external world. Further resolution on the health of the PSU

banks and also easier monetary policy conditions should lead to a higher credit demand from the banking sector. Overall, it appears that

the domestic tailwinds will preside over the external headwinds. This leads us to believe that FY20 GDP growth could push higher to

7.2% from 7.0% in FY19 . However, Risk to this view comes from 1) lower than optimal monsoons, 2) sharper than expected global

growth slowdown, and 3) any spike in oil prices led on account of supply cuts.

For SIP calculations above, the data assumes the investment of ̀ 10,000/- on 1st day of every month or the subsequent working day. Load & Taxes are not considered for computation of returns. Performance for dividend option would assume reinvestment of tax free dividends declared at the then prevailing NAV.

CAGR returns are computed after accounting for the cash flow by using XIRR method (investment internal rate of return). Where Benchmark returns are not available, they have not been shown.

Past performance may or may not be sustained in future. Returns greater than 1 year period are compounded annualized. Dividends are assumed to be reinvested and bonus is adjusted. Load is not taken into consideration. For SIP returns, monthly investment of equal amounts invested on the 1st day of every month has been considered.
