Storytelling workshopAssociate Professor Doug Ward led a two-day workshop on digital storytelling for 14 middleschool students in the Duke TIP program. Chandler Boese, a J-School student, assisted Wardwith the workshop. Watch a video of the workshop here.

Associate Professor Tim Bengtson's Strategic Campaigns students visited Barkley advertisingagency in Kansas City on Nov. 2 to obtain feedback on their research and recommendations forNoodles and Company, an account served by Barkley and the focus of the class this fall. MikeSwenson, a J-School graduate, hosted the event. Final presentations will be made to Noodlesand Company brand management on Dec. 15 in the Kansas Union. Mark Mears, another J-School graduate, is executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Noodles and Company.

Associate Professor Mugur Geana spoke to the Advisory Board of KU International Programson Oct. 30. His presentation focused on the results and achievements of a three-year researchstudy on strategic communication about dengue fever involving underserved communities inCosta Rica, a project funded by International Programs and the University of Costa Rica.

Geana delivered a presentation Nov. 5 about the increased need to develop mobile applicationsfor research in public health at the 2015 Speed Science meeting at KU Medical Center. Thescience networking event included researchers from Children's Mercy Hospital, the University ofMissouri-Kansas City and KU Medical Center and explored new research ideas and collaborationsin the KC area and beyond.

Professor Jimmy Gentry's Entrepreneurial Communication class, which meets weekly in theVillage Square co-working space at the Kansas City Startup Village, has visited with the followingpresenters recently: Ryan Bennett, CEO, IdleSmart; Adrianna Choquette, director of talentacquisition, mySidewalk by MindMixer; Will Katz, director, KU Small Business DevelopmentCenter; Brad McDonald, CEO, McDonald Marketing Service, H&S Quality Foods and KC TimberChallenge; Ryan Weber, president, KCNext; Jessica Nelson, managing director, TeamKCC,Kansas City Area Development Council; Diane O'Byrne, CEO, Competitive Resources; MaryBeth Gentry, founder and CEO, Young Women on the Move, and Julie Edge, chief storytellerand co-founder, Creelio.

Nathan Rodriguez had his paper, "Hero or traitor? A comparative analysis of mass mediarepresentations of Edward Snowden," accepted for presentation at the 74th annual MidwestPolitical Science Association conference on April 7-10 in Chicago.

InternshipsThe Kansas City Star sports department is seeking an intern for summer 2016 to covercommunity sports and help out with video and reporting from Royals games and Chiefs trainingcamp. Students would work for 10 weeks for class credit. Students are encouraged to enter the Hearst Journalism Awards Program for outstanding work inwriting, broadcast, photojournalism and multimedia categories. Scholarship prizes range from$1,000 to $5,000. Deadlines vary for each category. Each year, students are eligible to apply for School of Journalism scholarships. All studentsadmitted to the school are encouraged to apply. The Carnegie-Knight News21 program invites journalism students to apply for this prestigiousopportunity. The program begins with a virtual seminar during the spring 2016 semester taught byLeonard Downie Jr., former editor of The Washington Post. Students will conduct research andlearn from experts on civil rights in America. The seminar is followed by an immersive reportingexperience in the summer, led by News21 Executive Editor Jacqueline Petchel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist. Students work out of a newsroom at the Walter Cronkite School ofJournalism and Mass Communication in downtown Phoenix and travel the country to report andproduce their in-depth, multimedia stories. The BEA Festival of Media Arts is accepting entries for its international exhibition of studentwork in the following competitions: audio, documentary, interactive multimedia, two-year/smallcolleges, news, scriptwriting, sports and video. The Scripps International Innovators Cup invites colleges and universities to pit their beststudent team around a new media business idea with other teams from around the world.
