In Civil Engineering:Tasneem GhoorThesis Title: Developments in anaerobic digestion modelling

Tasneem Ghoor holds a BSc(Eng) in Civil Engineering from UCT. In 2013 she registered for an MSc(Eng) at UCT focusing on modelling anaerobic digestion systems. Due to the large scope of work, she upgraded to PhD after two years. Anaerobic digestion is a widely applied technology for generating energy-rich methane gas. However, many digesters are operated far below capacity due to fear of irrecoverable failure, which occurs when the consortium of anaerobic bacteria get out of synchronisation causing the pH in the digester to fall below 6.6. Tasneem Ghoor’s thesis focused on modelling anaerobic digester failure by modelling the upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) digester. The lower part of the UASB is in a permanent failed state but the system recovers in the upper part because the pH is controlled to remain above 6.6. One of the key outcomes of her model is that it allowed exploration of the conditions under which digesters fail. Apart from proposing improvements to anaerobic digestion models, the better understanding of how digesters fail allows them to not only be operated closer to their maximum capacity but also to be started up faster, which requires keeping the growth rates of the consortium of anaerobic bacteria synchronised.

Hazvinei Tsitsi Tamuka MoyoThesis Title: The dynamic interaction of land use and transport in a highly fragmented city: the case for Cape Town, South Africa

Hazvinei Tamuka Moyo holds a BSc(Hons) in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe, in addition to an honours in Economic Science from the University of the Witwatersrand. She obtained her MPhil in Transport Studies at UCT and commenced her PhD with the Centre for Transport Studies in 2014 under the UCT Carnegie Fellowship. Hazvinei Tamuka Moyo’s thesis focuses on understanding the dynamics between land use and transport and their influence on urban change in Cape Town. By applying a sequential stage wise procedure, she set up, calibrated and validated a dynamic land use transport model for the city. She utilised the model to evaluate the influence of different policy interventions in addressing urban issues such as congestion, access to employment for the low-income cohort, and growth of informal settlements. The findings show that a better coordination between land use and transport can improve the disparities between housing and employment thus reducing the commuting distance to work for the low-income cohort. The findings are also useful in advocating for the use of urban modelling tools to inform policies, thus facilitating the development of proactive approaches to land use and transport planning in Cape Town and South Africa.

Supervisor: Professor M Zuidgeest (Civil Engineering)

In Construction Economics & Management:Elizabeth Mirika MusvotoThesis Title: The planning system, property markets and the development of affordable housing: case studies from Cape Town

Elizabeth Musvoto holds a bachelor’s degree in Town and Regional Planning and a Master of Science in Real Estate, both from the University of Pretoria. Elizabeth Musvoto’s thesis investigates the causes of unfavourable outcomes in terms of location, density, integration and affordability in the affordable housing market. All these challenges, the study noted, were occurring in a context were the South African government is making concerted efforts to develop integrated affordable housing at appropriate locations and densities. The study employs structure-agency theory to investigate how structural variables influenced the actions of actors leading to outcomes in the affordable housing market. Empirical data was collected using household surveys, survey monkey questionnaires and semi-structured interviews in five case studies of affordable housing developments in Cape Town. The study finds that while the principles of densification, integration and the use of planning tools in housing policies are sufficiently reflected in the post-apartheid planning system, the planning system and other structural variables constrained the development of integrated affordable housing at appropriate locations and densities.
