Sand and Stars

Taken from “The Genesis Record” by Henry M. Morris

(Mr. Morris’ writings are accepted by many old-time Baptists preachers)

After Abraham had completed the work of offering the ram on the altar as a burn’t offering, the angel of the Lord spoke to him again from heaven. God had given him his final examination, as it were, and Abraham had passed the test perfectly. There was no longer any question that he and his seed would be qualified to serve as God’s channel of blessing for mankind; therefore God was ready to fully implement His great plan through them. As far as the record goes, this is the last time God would speak personally to Abraham, so He summoned up all His previous promises and enlarged on them.

To emphasize as strongly as possible that His word would be accomplished, God made an oath to Abraham, swearing by His own name, “For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

Jesus said, “He that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37) God told Abraham: “Because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son,” therefore he would:

1. bless Abraham himself abundantly;

2. make his descendants (seed) as innumerable as the stars of heaven or as the sand by the sea;

3. cause his descendants (seed) to prevail against their enemies;

4. cause all other nations of the earth likewise to be blessed in Abraham’s seed

Three times in this promise God used the word “seed.” It is instructive to note God’s comparison of Abraham’s seed to the sand and to the stars. He had said once before (Genesis 15:5) that his seed would be as numerous as the stars of heaven. However, to the naked eye one can only count approximately three thousand, at the most. Consequently, God’s promise might not at first have seemed overly impressive, since three thousand descendants would not make a very large nation. Now, however, God says in effect that there are as many stars as there are grains of sand on the seashore. He had earlier told Abraham his seed would be “as the dust of the earth” in number (Genesis 13:16)

Abraham recognized that God was saying his descendants would be impossible to count, but it did sound as though He were making an “unscientific” comparison when He likened the stars to the sand. In our modern day of giant telescopes, however, we know that such a comparison is very appropriate. No one knows the exact number of the stars, but it can be roughly estimated for the observable universe, at least, as approximately 10 25 Since there are approximately 10 15. square feet of area on the earth’s surface, and approximately 15 million grains of sand in a cubic foot of sand, if we assume that there is an averag of 1,000 feet of unconsolidated sediments around the surface of the earth (probably deeper than this on the ocean bottom, but shallower on the land surfaces), then the number of sand-sized particles would be calculated as 10 25. Although such a calculation may well be considerably in error, it at least shows that the stars and the sand are of about the same order of magnitude in number. This fact could not have been discovered by men without the telescope; so it constitutes one of the many remarkable examples of modern scientific truths found in the pages of the Bible long before scientists could have learned them by the scientific method.

ABOUT HEAVENLY SINGING

A preacher said there would be nothing in heaven but singing and he was reminiscent of a fellow preacher who was more interested in singing than he was preaching. So, this preacher and the singer-preacher were arguing over whether on Sunday night they were going to have a sermon or have a singing. The singer said, “Let’s have a singing.” The preacher said, “Well, I don’t fell like dismissing preaching service.” The singer said, “You know when we get to heaven, there’s not going to be any preaching. That’s all over. All we’re going to do up there is sing.” The preacher said, “That’s right, but if we don’t do some preaching down here, there won’t be anybody up there to sing.” So we can mix it down here, preaching and singing, but up there we’ll sing and rejoice on and on.

Do you ever have this problem?

Ordination of Bro. David Reed

The ordination of Bro. David Reed took place at Beckwith Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, March 5. The moderator was Bro. Danny Tomlinson, Clerk, Gerald Reid; Presentation of Candidate – Edward Tomlinson; Interrogation of Candidate - Elder Barry Allison; Prayer – Elder Jr. Dickerson; Charge to Candidate – Elder Danny Raines; Charge to the Church – Elder Pee Wee Massey; Presentation of the Bible – Elder James Gibbs. The Presbytery was represented by the following churches: Caney Fork, Mt. Tabor, McFerrin, Plunkett’s Creek, Harvest, Faith (Nashville), Gateway, Mt. Calvary, Rayon City, North Carthage;, South Carthage, Jared and Beckwith.

Bro. David gave his experience of salvation. Back around 1967 his grandmother, Nell Dickerson, would come to their home during tobacco setting time and in the evenings they would gather around and talk about the Lord and he liked to hear this. During this time he began to not like to hear this sometimes and then he realized they had something he didn’t have. There was a meeting that began the first week in October of 1967 at the Sanderson’s Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Bro. Swann was the preacher. David was in much trouble. They came to talk to him and he went to the altar and there God saved his soul. David joined Faith Missionary Baptist Church in June of 1980 and sometime around 2001 he united with Beckwith Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet. We are all proud of David and agree that he will make a very good Deacon. We wish him the best in this office of his church

A Little Laughter is Good

An old time preacher was moderator of the association. He didn’t believe in women speaking in the churches. One got up and started to speak. He said, “Sister, Paul forbade women speaking in the church, so I must ask you to sit down.”

Said she – “Where would you men be if it wasn’t for women?”

He replied, “In the Garden of Eden, Sister.”
